I once did something similar where a coworker I'd stuck up for threw me under the bus to our boss. I worked at a cafe with an espresso machine, so in a rage I made a figure of him out of a twist tie, put it in one of the metal cups we used to steam milk, filled that with water, and blasted it with the steamer. He got in trouble for lying pretty quickly after that, though that might've been incidental

Choose your spell ingredients intentionally
It's all well and good to Google "spiritual protective herbs" and pick a couple random ones off the list, but do you understand why that herb is protective? Does it align with your intention?
I've always liked to use baking as an analogy for spellwork:
Let's say you want to bake a cake - yummy! You'll need flour for the basic structure, sugar to sweeten, eggs to bind the ingredients, a fat for texture and a leavening agent to make it rise.
So you pop to the shops and you grab bread flour, icing sugar, eggs, shortening and yeast.
Technically, these are all correct: bread flour is a flour, icing sugar is a sugar, yeast is a leavening agent etc. And they all work great for other baked goods! Yeast is great at making bread rise and icing sugar is super sweet on top of a cupcake.
But if you mix all of these together, the final result probably isn't going to be what you wanted. Why? Well because you haven't understood why each ingredient is needed or how a cake works!!
When crafting a spell it's important to understand what your intention is and how the spell is going to work - it can also help to think about how certain ingredients might interact within the spell.
The best way to start doing this is to experiment. Have a go at crafting your own spells and working with different ingredients. What does their folklore say? What does their energy feel like? How do they interact with the other ingredients! Keep a journal or notebook full of your notes as you build up your knowledge!

Practical Energy Work 01 🐔 Bedrock
This post is part of a masterpost. Click here to go to the masterpost. Please read the disclaimer in the masterpost if you notice our beliefs may be different. Next: Practical Energy Work 02 anticipated, not published
When I say "energy work" I mean the manipulation of metaphysical energies through direct application of willpower.
I think in order for us to navigate this terrain together we should be on the same page about what these energies are and how it's possible to work with them in the first place.
"But how can I do energy work? How is it possible?"
You do not need to integrate or internalize the following beliefs. But for the purposes of this series, let's just agree that the following things are true - even if you don't 'really' believe them.
If we can agree on these things while we do energy work together, we'll be able to build our understanding of energy work on the same bedrock, perhaps making it possible for us to raise sturdy creations using very similar architecture.
I'm using the term 'ethereal energy', which I will explain below, because I'm a bit worn out by the vagueness of 'metaphysical'.
1. Ethereal energy is some beautiful stuff about the web of life, basically
'Metaphysical' energy exists on what you might call astral, ethereal, or subtle planes. I call it ethereal energy, or at least I do for this series.
There's lots of kinds of this energy, categorized by its qualities. Ethereal energy can be rapid or slow-moving, invigorating or calming, enlivening or draining.
This energy is infused within and around the world, and it's a vital and natural aspect of experiencing our reality. Ethereal energy isn't far away or locked behind a veil: it's around us all the time. It's part of life and existence itself in our world.
This energy is a major part of how living beings sense and perceive the world around us. This energy has its own qualities, but it also carries a great deal of information - just like a warm humid breeze in late May carries a great deal of information to people who understand weather patterns.
This energy influences what is around it. Living beings, spirits, the dead, and even gods are impacted by ethereal energy. This is true because most beings exist on the same plane as ethereal energies: we're all joined together by the ethereal web of life. Yes, we're a part of the same web of life as both the gods and the tiniest amoeba in the primordial sea! Isn't that beautiful?
Because we're all joined together by the ethereal, these energies can be manipulated to directly impact experienced reality for everything bound together by the ethereal web of life, or anything that needs to interact with that web.
2. People are inherently energy-sensing
Everything alive (and many things not alive in the biological sense) is inherently energy sensing.
You can learn to sense, interact with, read, and interpret energies because this is just something that people can normally do.
We sense energies all the time and we're used to interacting with them as part of our normal way of being.
Some people are naturally more energy-sensing and more reliant on the information they gather from their inborn energy-sensing. Other people are more closed off, gaining little information from the energy around them or rarely relying on it.
You can learn to get more in touch with your natural energy sensing and actively work with it as an inherent sense. You can do this casually as a way of getting to know your entire being, or you can do this more formally as a focused hobby and skill.
3. People are inherently able to manipulate and control energies.
You can gather up, modify, deposit, or dissipate metaphysical energies. People do this all the time as part of being alive, just like we move water from the sink to the toilet by virtue of being living beings.
We can control and move energies because we naturally exist within the ethereal web of life. Each of us has an ethereal extension of our physical bodies, commonly referred to as the 'energy body'. But it just means that our natural selves extend beyond the physical, and we can affect and manipulate ethereal energies just like we can manipulate the cup of coffee on the counter.
Once we expand personal focus and awareness into energy sensing, then discerning and manipulating energies is just like any other skill. This is just like a beginner cook slowly expanding their palate and truly tasting new flavors inside of old foods, just because of careful practice and focus on their experiences.
Or, this is like a sculptor being able to make finer and more delicate sculptures. They've had their hands the whole time, but they can begin to do things they've never done before because they've chosen to focus on expanding a specific skill.
4. Ethereal energy is like water, not like the atmosphere: there's not an even coating of it everywhere
Ethereal energy can be densely packed into an area, within an object, or around a living being.
Or it can be stretched thin and patchy, or completely absent altogether.
Energy workers and Witches can tell you that powerful wellsprings of ethereal energy are not always available. In fact you may have to go through significant effort to find energies that are suitable to your needs (meaning that their qualities closely match the qualities of energy you need to get your job done).
This is why major tasks of the beginner energy worker (and Witch) are to learn how to discover free-flowing wellsprings of ethereal power which they can draw on in order to create energetic walls, objects, artificial spirits, and any other desired design.
This also means that it's more than possible for you to fuck up the energy balance within a place or especially within yourself, leading to potentially a great deal of discomfort until the place is rebalanced (which may happen automatically over time).
And this is why, if the first major task of the energy worker or Witch is to learn how to raise up energy, the second major task is to learn to put it down, or in other words dissipate, rebalance, diffuse, or send away energies. If this is not done, you can end up fucking up the ethereal plane around you so that your own spaces become flooded with dense energies of strange qualities, impacting you (and everyone else, including the spirits) in unexpected and unwanted ways.
(Or inversely, you can end up stripping ethereal energies out of a space, making it feel 'dead' and uncomfortable or even actively difficult to exist in).
5. Energy sensing and manipulation is going to be a lot easier if you accept that it's regularnatural and it's been around you this entire time
Once we're used to the idea that we innately exist beyond the physical, beginning to identify the energies around us becomes relatively trivial when we remember that we're already very familiar with those energies!
Ethereal energies are not exotic, they are ordinary. I believe that it's more difficult to find these energies by looking for something new or strange. It's easier to find them by seeking out the commonplace qualities of daily living.
Whether or not you want to be an energy worker, energy is a part of your life and it has an impact on you, just as the weather outside and the temperature and humidity in your house has an impact on you.
This is because it's around us all of the time! It's just a part of our life.
When trying to learn energy sensing, remember that you are a fish in the ocean looking for water. You're not going to be running into exotic energies with bizarre qualities - not at the beginning.
What are the qualities of elemental fire? Remember the last time you sat before a bonfire or a hearth fire. Remember how it felt to be near that fire - the experiences the fire gave you that you would not have experienced if not but for that fire. Those are some of the qualities of elemental fire. That was your energy sensing self, tasting the fire the way the chef tastes a strawberry.
When looking for elemental fire to raise up, look for something that feels the same way as the bonfire did. It's that easy. Do you want to drain elemental fire out of a situation? Keep working until every last trace of the bonfire experience is drained away, until you can't find any subtle reminder of a bonfire in that place.

i see people post on here all the time about how they felt like a lesser witch because X, and advise not to feel like a lesser witch because X, and I really have to wonder if that would be such a common feeling if we weren't trapped in a bubble of advertising constantly trying to insinuate to the entire populace that lesser is a thing that happens in people and you need to be sure it doesn't happen to you, with our fresh new product all the people who aren't wastes of otherwise profitable organs are already using. I'm thinking it might have affected us

taglocks tldr;
taglocks are items used to tie a spell to an object or person, whom i will be referring to as a target for the purpose of this post.
taglocks are items or ideas that represent the target or have belonged to the target - their name written down, a photo of them, their signature, DNA, etc.
they are especially useful for sympathetic magic (using objects or actions resembling or symbolically associated with the situation you want to influence).
keep in mind, the term “sympathetic” has nothing to do with actual sympathy or empathy - it refers to the idea of “like attracts like” and relates to the synchronicities and ties between objects and events that are involved to make these spells successful. think “making a poppet representing a target [using taglocks] in order to gain control over them or their actions.”
sympathetic magic can be helpful or harmful depending on your intent.
“isn’t all magic sympathetic?” well not necessarily - let’s say you want to cast a shield over yourself. you could go the route of visualization and energy manipulation to form the shield; or you could go the sympathetic route and use objects or items that represent yourself and the type of shield you want in order to perform the spell instead.
taglocks can be added to poppets, spell jars, sachets, or any other vessel you wish to contain the spell and its ingredients.

Hey there Chicken! Since we are on the topic of money, and of course only if you feel comfortable, what are your thoughts on the effectiveness of money spells and if you have any personal experience on the matter I'd love to hear it! I personally deal with a disability that affects my daily life and working a regular job is not a given. Good day to all!!
I think money spells work just fine and are perhaps one of the easier ways to test out your magic. People really do just find money on the ground!
We may consider that when it comes to having and obtaining money, imagining several sorcerous categories might help us fine-tune our workings. Consider these working definitions, and the ways which they may overlap:
Cash, or, money spell - A sorcerous working intended to obtain cash in hand. You find $20 on the ground. Someone buys your Etsy listing. You get a check returning an old medical copay.
Prosperity spell - A spell related to growth and increase, especially of physical means and finances. A new long-term client signs with your business. The contractor finally calls back for your new chicken coop addition. Your relative you've been supporting finally gets a job.
Luck spell - A spell which makes you uncannily successful at whatever you set your mind to, whether or not that thing has to do with money or finance.
Serviceperson don't rip me off spell - So no magic in the world could have stopped your car from breaking down. Time for more magic, perhaps of this variety, or even:
Get me an amazing deal, perhaps even donated as charity, on a vital service I must obtain spell.
For some people, these categories may hold no real difference. "Whether I cast a money spell or prosperity spell, the outcome is the same." But for others, the distinction may truly matter.
Take note of the kind of magic of this first category. It is magic of obtainment, summoning, and conjuring. That is: you do not have something, and you cast magic to draw it in to your life.
In my own way of casting, I would choose one or two herbal allies depending on my exact needs, a candle (fire has a way of speeding spell manifestation for me), and a planetary power. The Sun does well for all manner of prosperity and growth. Mercury adds speed and ease to business transactions, and Jupiter helps with personal success.
I would set up my spell with drawing and bringing-towards actions. This is all classic manifestation, after all!
But there are many ways to go about this - candle spells are just one. Floor washes, amulets, talismans, prayers, petitions. And so on. Many options, each according to circumstance and need.
Let's continue with a variety of money magic people seem to consider less often:
Stop spending spell - Hinders regular, out-of-pocket spending (although may do little for a spending addict), but also especially limits unexpected expenses.
IRS go away spell - Somewhat specialized, and a cousin of "inspector go away" spells (the IRS is the federal tax collector of the USA).
How is such a spell accomplished? Now we turn away from obtainment and conjuring, and move into the realm of banishing and protection.
"Protections are so boring!" people say, apparently unaware that one day they may too be audited by the tax man!
A money spell cast with Saturn, rusty water, and prayers to sword-wielding angels? Certainly - although it is not a spell designed to conjure money, the end result is that you have more money. A person may also be very well off using the power of mirrors and the Moon to hide from the unscrupulous eye of unwanted debt collectors.
So we have to think about that when it comes to money magic, and indeed personal finance in general: there is a difference between getting money and having more money at the end of the day.
It's even sometimes reported that as someone casts a cash spell, they simultaneously receive an unexpected expense about equivalent to the cash received in hand! Then enters the stop spending spell, but such occasions may also be solved by more curious financial sorcery:
Financial road-clearing, or, unblocking spell - For when normal avenues of wealth-building are unnaturally closed off, or when other financial spells fail.
Financial sphere healing spell - For when, for lack of a better phrase, your "money life" seems damaged, as if it's a big sack of gold coins but the sack has become torn and the coins spill out.
Financial sphere expansion spell - No matter what you do, you never gain true increase. As one door closes, another opens, yet you would like many doors open simultaneously. Metaphorically, this is getting a bigger sack for your gold coins.
We started with classic money-drawing style spells, and touched on banishing and protective spells. Now we have arrived at cleansing, clearing, and healing spells. Imagine your financial sphere encapsulated in a poppet stuffed with prosperous herbs, gently rubbed down with solar oil and sung sweet songs of nurturing growth.
Many fun things can happen. Many fun things.
Of course, the list goes on. Of course it does. Perhaps you want to obtain money, but specifically you want to do so through your small business because that growth is an important part of your long-term wealth building goals. However, when you cast normal money spells - even when they are focused on your business - they fall flat, or still manifest in ways not directly related to people buying your services.
Perhaps then you'd like to engage in a bit of magical warfare (fun!):
Business battlefield spell - To give you, and your business, a cutthroat competitive edge and beat back all so-called competitors in the business arena!
Product glamour spell - Gives your individual listings, service packages, and so on, an alluring glimmer that potential customers can't forget about (or resist buying). Or, upon yourself or resume, for interviews.
Here perhaps we will touch on the powers of Mars or the Moon, or stranger forces still.
Now...
Magic works differently for different people. One person may be smashing at offensive and defensive magic, yet can't cast a "money spell" to save their lives. This person may still find great success in utilizing their powers of attack and defense in the financial sphere. So there are many options, and many ways to approach obtaining money and prevent yourself from losing it. This list is, after all, far from definitive.
And do not forget, of course, that while magic can be layered and many spells can go on at once, from time to time it benefits a person to let the waters clear and the ripples die down before throwing in another stone.

Grave offerings and burying the dead with tools and goods is actually such a deeply human thing to do. It's not really even necessarily about how much you believe in a literal afterlife or them taking the tools with them. It's also just going Wait, I'm Not Done Taking Care Of You, let me make you one more pair of socks so your feet won't be cold when you go wherever it is where I can't follow.

Some Advice for Beginner Witches/Advice I Wish I Got
I'm by no means an expert in anything magical or an expert witch, this is mostly just advice/tips that I wish I had had when I was first starting my practice OR advice that I think a lot of beginners could benefit from. Resources will also be linked at the end.
Tumblr media
This is a rather long post so everything else is under the cut, but I've divided everything into general advice, spiritual practice advice, and community-oriented advice. Links to applicable sources are under Miscellanea.
General Advice/Things to Keep in Mind
Consider the mundane stuff first! Use naturally-sourced/biodegradable and ecologically safe offerings/magic components when working outside or if you're going to return something to the earth (ex. salt will kill plants/damage soil so don't do a salt circle- use crushed eggshells instead and don't bury anything non-biodegradable/naturally sourced), practice good fire safety (ffs every witchy person I've run across has at least 1 'fire incident'), make sure not to expose crystals to things they'll react negatively to (ex. pyrite in water will form sulfuric acid), etcetera etcetera.
You don't need to get all new specialty equipment or a ton of things to start your spiritual practice. You may want to but you by no means do you have to. A lot of everyday items that you may already have can perform magical uses, so just use the things you have until you run into specific items you may want to add to your practice (ie you might make an alter out of things you already have and then switch out elements with new preferred items as you get them). Honestly things might work better if you use older/mundane items you have a close connection to.
Similarly, you don't need to go and get the most expensive things for your craft either. If you're wanting to splurge on anything, splurge on safety supplies (fire safety supplies or anything that will make your practice more safe practically are good places to start) and workhorse items that you will be able to use frequently long-term. This doesn't have to be a major strain on your budget and shouldn't be a financial burden to you.
Magical/Spiritual practitioners DO NOT all believe the same things. Spiritual practices/Spirituality is more of an umbrella category that encompasses many different practices (or practitioner communities) rather than a specific belief system/community and most practitioners ascribe to schools of practice or systems of belief and combine those systems with their own unverified personal gnosis (typically called UPG). Overlaps in beliefs or practices happen fairly regularly, but will be different for different practices.
You can learn something from most practitioners, even if they come from a different belief system or practice (disclaimer: do not take from/try to practice closed practices/religions, I am not telling you to do that). By this I mean that other practitioners will probably have different bases of knowledge and perspectives that may be of help to you even if they come from a different type of practice. Personally, if I'm struggling with understanding a specific concept or I'm having issues linking something up within the rest of my practice, hearing someone else's viewpoint or seeing how they link/incorporate different aspects of their practice can be a catalyst for working through those issues
Take care of yourself. Look into spiritual psychosis and what to look out for, and and try to not fall down the rabbit hole of convert fervor. Most people are not expecting you to have your entire practice nailed down within the first week (tbh your practice will probably change and evolve throughout your life), so take your time and go at a pace that's sustainable for you. You'll probably even have rest/break periods of low/zero engagement in your practice, and if that happens that's fine too!
Magic Advice & Spiritual Practice Tips
I would recommend starting where you are most interested or start working with what you're most inclined towards. For example, don't start with candle magic if you're more interested in plant magic just because it's more recommended for beginners. You're more likely to be able to genuinely engage with and enjoy your practice if you have a connection with what you're doing. Personally I started with astrology and crystals, and then got into divination work with pendulums and tarot before expanding into everything else I do because that was the path my interests aligned with. Your path is probably going to be different, and that's great!
However, if you're looking for easy places to start, I do have recommendations based on how easy they are to access and incorporate into your everyday life. Kitchen witchcraft is pretty easy to start with assuming you already cook (or would like to learn how) and can become very intuitive once you have a good grasp on cooking and magic. Small bits of glamour magic or sigil work can also be easy to do since you're already bathing/clothing yourself (charming clothing and toiletries is fairly easy and beginner friendly). Cartomancy can also be a solid way to go, since a cheap or DIY'd tarot deck or a playing card deck can be fairly accessible for most people. Pendulums, runes, and bone throwing kits/magpie oracles can also be DIY'd easily or bought depending on your preferences.
Incorporate the knowledge and skills you already have! A lot of practical skills you may already have can be of practical application to your practice. I've also found that my magical understanding of concepts is deepened when I understand how things work on a mundane level.
Going along with that last point, I think skill building/skill use can have devotional applications (if devotional actions are part of your practice). Ex. if you worship a deity that is associated with craft or a particular skill, you can absolutely dedicate your pursuit of knowledge in that skill or dedicate a project to a deity/spirit of your choice. Alternatively, dedicate that skill building to yourself or your practice (for example, dedicate the creation of a homemade alter cloth to an alter or towards the growth of your craft/practice)
I have found that there's a lot of advice regarding cursing and doing magic when your experiencing heightened emotions. Personally, I'm curse neutral I don't really do them (I've just never felt the drive to) but I have no issue with them. Do as you will, but be prepared to deal with whatever consequences may arise (tbh this is good general advice for your practice). Regarding doing a working when you're in a heightened emotional state, I would just say in my experience that doing magic in that state can lead to impulsive actions or not thinking something through. Do whatever you're going to do, but maybe calm down or proceed with caution for best results is all I'm saying.
Sometimes the best thing to happen with a working is for it to fail. Maybe you were working with something you shouldn't (like a closed practice that wouldn't pertain to you), or it's something you wouldn't be able to handle, or maybe it's something that would end up being regrettable if it actually worked. There are a lot of reasons why something not working can be for the best, but that is sometimes the best outcome for a working (even if you don't realize it in the moment).
Look for ways to evolve your practice and think outside of the box! Experiment with new applications of different working (like glamour magic to be forgettable/unnoticeable instead of noteworthy), involve new components if they make sense (ex: enchant some ink if the working has a written component), or make your own correspondences based on how things work for you
I have found that location can effect a working quite a bit (and effect you if it backfires). One of the more helpful pieces of advice I've gotten is if you're planning on doing a bainful working/cursework/negative working, don't do that where you live/exist regularly (like your job). Like, if you're wishing bad luck towards someone you don't want to have it backside on you where you sleep and live (working off property at least or at a crossroads world be ideal in this case). Similarly if one was to do a beneficial spell regarding sleep, do that at your home in your bedroom.
This also applies to community advice but: if you come across someone else's working, I would advise that you not tamper with it unless you have to. Beyond not knowing what it's for/affecting, the working may have hazardous components you aren't aware of (sharp bits, mold, toxic/allergic reaction causing substances, etc)
Community Advice & Relationship Building
Like any group of people, magic/spiritual communities can have bad/malicious actors within them, typically in the form of grifters, different types of alt-righters, and cults. I would recommend learning to spot and avoid alt-righters and nazis quickly as the alt-right loves magic & occult spaces and they will try to recruit or radicalize you if they get the opportunity. Familiarizing yourself with ways to spot grifters, red flags for cults, and common symbols/red flags of by the alt-right in magic/ occult spaces is important (learn quick and early and then stay up-to-date on that information for the safety of yourself/others).
You can make your practice as private or collaborative as you'd like, but having friends or community connections is nice! Being friendly and polite will generally go a long way to meet people and see if you would want to try to form connections within different practitioner communities online and offline.
In person locations/events might be a good but unreliable venues for meeting local practitioners, getting supplies, and learning new skills for your practice. Your local shops (depending on availability in your area) will probably have a mix of customers, but there's a decent chance there are regulars that you can meet and maybe form relationships with as well. Metaphysical shops, independent groups, and even areas/towns will also sometimes put on events/meet-and-greets/workshops that can be a fun way to connect with practitioners in your area.
Being friendly and respectful will get you pretty far with creating relationships in different magical spaces/communities. Reaching out to other people (online or irl) can be a good way to network and learn new things
