Our Christmas concert 2023
Despite a change of date and Musical Director (due to health reasons), our Christmas Concert, hosted on behalf of Woking and Sam Beare Hospice, went ahead on 4th December. Held in the Addlestone Methodist Church in Station Road, the audience settled in for an evening of Christmas music from the choir, a trio of brass players from the Chertsey Orchestra and to join in singing traditional carols. The concert began with everyone singing 'Once in David's City' . The choir then sang a Ukrainian carol followed by 'A Winter's Tale' - memorably sung by David Essex some years ago. Next the three brass (trombone, French horn and euphonium) players chose to play 'Good King Wenceslas', 'In the Bleak Midwinter' and 'The First Nowell' for us all to sing along to. Samatha Jones from the Fundraising Department of the Hospice was introduced and she spoke about how financial support for the Hospice was crucial for the running of the services which the Hospice offered. She thanked everyone for coming to the concert and mentioned that the Addlestone Singers had helped to raise £11,000 for the Hospice in the past few years. Time then for the Interval. Homemade cakes (chocolate, ginger, lemon drizzle, Victoria sponge) to name but a few and made by the ladies of the choir, were available together with a hot drink. It was also a chance to buy raffle tickets for the seven well-filled Christmas hampers and to purchase some knitted characters, hats, scarves and mittens - all made by members of the choir. The choir began Part 2 of the concert with 'Silent Night/White Christmas' which was followed by 'O Little Town of Bethlehem' which we all joined in singing. For their second performance the brass trio played three more carols for our participation, 'We Three Kings', 'O Christmas Tree' and ending with a rousing 'Hark the Herald Angels', finishing with 'Rocking Around the Christmas Tree' and 'Jingle Bell Rock'. As is traditional, the concert came to an end with everyone singing 'O Come All Ye Faithful'.
Our concert couldn't have gone ahead had it not been for Claire Garner, Musical Director of the Chertsey Orchestra, agreeing to step in at the last minute to enable the concert to be held. Our very grateful thanks go to her and pianist accompanist, Kayte Cable, who played at our final rehearsals and on the concert evening,
The retiring bucket collection on the night amounted to £270.50. This figure is likely to increase when all other contributions are known. With thanks to all who donated.

Our concert on 20th May was a great success. As well as providing an evening of entertainment, we collected £206.25 for Woking and Sam Beare Hospice making the total we have raised for the hospice in the last few years to £11,554.25.
Our Concert celebrated King Charles III’s coronation with songs from the four nations of the United Kingdom and others reflecting on his interest in the environment, finishing off with some songs from the shows.
Our guest artists were Claire on violin and Michelle on piano. Their pieces matched the theme of the concert, Elgar, ‘Salut d’Amour’ and ‘Chanson de Matin, the beautiful ‘Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana’ by Mascagni and the ‘Third Movement of Spring’ from the Four Sea-sons by Vivaldi. Claire Garner is Music Director of Chertsey Orchestra which performed with us at our Christmas concert.
The audience joined us in singing, Singing in the Rain, Mull of Kintyre and I vow to thee my country.
In the interval there were refreshments (lovely cakes!) and an opportunity to buy raffle tickets.
We are now enjoying our social get-togethers during the summer, looking forward the new term starting on 11th September and our Come and Sing on 16th September. Come along and enjoy an afternoon of singing with us.

Happy New Year
A new year and a new set of music to learn for our concert on 20th May.
If you enjoy singing, why not come along and try us out. We start on 9th January but you can join us anytime. We rehearse on Monday evenings in the Methodist Church in Addlestone, 8 to 9.45 pm. You don't need to be able to read music and there is no audition. We don't ask you to pay a subscription straightaway. You can come along for 3 weeks to see how it goes and if you find that you like being with us, that's great!
We also have a number of social activities throughout the year. In January we will be having a meal out at an Italian restaurant and on two of our rehearsal evenings we will be having a 'bring and buy' sale. Another quiz is also planned, date to be confirmed.

Christmas concert
Thanks to everyone who came along to our concert on 12th December to make it such a success. On a very cold Monday evening our audience sang along to well known carols and listened to the choir singing pieces we had been rehearsing in previous weeks, including the Ukrainian carol, the Carol of the Christmas Bells. We were delighted that Chertsey Community Orchestra were able to join us again for the evening. Mulled wine and mince pies went down well in the interval and the raffle was drawn after the final 'O Come All Ye Faithful'.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to the bucket collection for Woking and Sam Beare Hospice, totally £222.03.

Annual General Meeting
Chairman’s Report 2021-22
Annual General Meeting
                 5th September 2022
www.addlestonesingers.tumblr.com
We have come back after Covid to celebrate our 50th anniversary year in 2022.
On 7th May we were proud to be presented with a certificate in recognition of raising over £10,585.56
for Woking and Sam Beare Hospice.
Our May concert added an extra £540.95 to this total.
Rehearsals
It was wonderful to be back rehearsing together as Covid restrictions eased.  In September we continued to rehearse in the main hall at Addlestone Community Centre.  The Methodist Church was not open for the early part of our year.
Rehearsals ran
Monday 6th September to concert on 6th December
Monday 10th January to concert on 14th May
There were not sufficient members available to make a Summer singing session viable.  Our Musical Director ran 2 of her singers workshops locally for those who wanted to take part.
Our Monday rehearsals are from 8pm to 9.45pm with a break for refreshments.  From time to time we will have a ‘Bring and buy’ or sales of books, hats and other knitted items
Concerts
Our Christmas concert was held on Monday 6th December in Addlestone Community Centre with guest artists Chertsey Orchestra,  on behalf of Woking and Sam Beare Hospice.  It was lovely to see about 70 people in the audience,  so pleased to be back to live music after so long of being unable to do so.  We still observed social distancing guidance.
Thanks to Tesco for their donation of some mulled wine and mince pies.
Our 50th anniversary Spring concert was held on Saturday 14th May, again in the Community Centre with guest artists Chertsey Orchestra, where we sang songs chosen by the ladies.  Each member was wearing a golden brooch in the shape of a treble clef which had been presented to them the previous week to mark our 50th year.  We started the concert with the National Anthem in recognition of the forthcoming Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
Singing at Other events
On 9th December some of us gathered round the piano at the Community Centre to lead audience singing of well known carols at an afternoon Tea party.
We also gathered round the piano at the Community Centre for the Jubilee Indoor street party on 4th June.
On both occasions there was enthusiastic singing from the audience.
We were unable to sing in Care Homes while Covid restrictions continued.
Social Events
As the year progressed and we were able to mix more socially, we held the following events
Cake and Quiz afternoon Tuesday 5th April
Picnic at Cowey Sale Monday 16th May
Sunday 24th July Cream tea at Sarah’s provided by herself and her husband.  Lovely afternoon!
See over for page 2
Musical Director and Pianist
Our Musical Director, Susan Higgins is in her 21st year with us.  We thank her for guiding and leading us through our musical journey.
We are lucky to have 2 Accompanists who were able to provide cover throughout the year, Janet Mannan in her 18th year with us and Tom Higgins who had supported us so well while we were singing on Zoom the previous year.
Membership
We continue to have a solid core of members.  Unfortunately not everyone was able to return having been unable to meet in person for well over a year.  Our membership for the Christmas session was  18 members, with 22 in the Spring term.
Unfortunately the lower membership has had an impact on our financial position, which will be reported by our Treasurer.
Committee
Our wonderful committee has continued to work tirelessly to meet all the challenges that have arisen and kept the choir together during what has been a very difficult 2 years for everyone.
Our helpers
If I mention anyone in particular I am bound to leave someone out.  Enough to say that we are so grateful to our friends and family members who support us in everything we do.
Membership of other groups
We continue to be affiliated to the Addlestone Community Association.  We will continue to attend meetings as they resume.  We continue to organise our Public Liability Insurance through a group of those who were previous members of the Runnymede Arts Association.
Addlestone Community Centre
Our thanks go to the team at the Centre for making us welcome and supporting our events throughout the year.
Music Library
Our music continues to be  located in the Methodist Church.
Repertoire
We have been fortunate to get together a good collection of music which has meant that it has not been necessary to buy new music.  This has been particularly valuable while we have all been getting used to singing back together again
Christmas 2021
50th anniversary    Spring 2021
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
A whole new world
Because of Him
Beauty and the Beast
Ding dong merrily on high
Bring me sunshine
Go tell it on the mountain
I could have danced all night
Joy to the world
I got rhythm
Santa Lucia
I know him so well
Shepherd’s pipe carol
I say a little prayer
Silent night
It’s a grand night for singing
Star Carol
Medley from Les Miserables
The Colours of Christmas
Thank you for the music
The Future
We have plenty to look forward to as we welcome new members.  We will continue celebrating our 50th anniversary year and look forward to  2023. More concerts, more raising money for charities, more social events.

5th September and the start of a new term. It was lovely to see 5 new ladies come and try out the choir, to see if it's the right choir for them. We always welcome new singers who will have the opportunity to join in, whether they are experienced singers or not. There is no audition and you don't need to be able to read music, just enjoy singing. You can come along for 3 weeks before you need to decide whether you want to join us and pay your subscription. We have a refreshment break midway during our rehearsal which gives members a chance to get to know each other.
We have started rehearsing for our Christmas concert on 12th December in support of Woking and Sam Beare Hospice. Our guest artists will be Chertsey Orchestra and St James's Handbell Ringers.
As well as singing together we have social activities. For 2 weeks we are having a Bring and Buy Book and Jigsaw sale. In November we are planning another Quiz and Cake event.
Ladies, come and try us out. You will get a warm welcome
