How to Verify an International Address
Address verification is an essential process for any business. Not only does it save your company money and reduce employee time spent on data cleanup, but it also ensures that your customers receive their products and services in a timely manner.
Verifying international addresses is no different than verifying any other address. However, it is a little more complex because of international variations in formats and languages that make it harder to maintain the level of accuracy needed for effective communication with your global customers.
Tumblr media
Variations in Language - Over half the world uses Latin characters to write addresses, and the remaining half uses their native language to express the information. This can make it difficult to validate the address because it doesn’t conform to DPV (Delivery Point Validation) standards.
The Order of Elements - A lot of the same elements appear in both names and addresses, but they may be in a different order. These include name, house number, floor or suite number, street address and even post office box numbers.
In some countries, this order is specified by law or standardized in the postal system, while other countries allow it to vary. This causes the addressing process to be strongly focused on elements such as building name, locality or district in whatever order the country specifies.
Aside from these details, the address itself also includes a number of other information points that may be more important in delivering the package. These could include an apartment or suite number, a missing zip code, and more.

PostGrid's International Address Validation API
Ensure Global Address Deliverability
As your business grows and expands across the globe, you're faced with new delivery challenges. Undeliverable mail costs you money, wastes paper, and can damage your brand image.
Tumblr media
The best way to solve these problems is by implementing real-time address verification. This solution works automatically and across borders to verify location data at scale, which is less resource-intensive than methods that require manual review, user friction, or multiple vendor subscriptions.
International Address Validation API
If you're shipping to customers around the world, international address verification is a smart addition to your email and postal workflows. This tool compares international addresses to an authoritative database in the country they're located in, ensuring that the information you're sending is correct and up-to-date.
240+ Countries/Territories Supporting the Address Validation Api
For each validated address, a normalized form is returned that includes various elements of the input address. These elements are then used to resolve addresses, which is the process of finding a possible or actual address that matches the user's input address.
Use Cases for the International Address Verification Api
PostGrid's international address validation api is a must-have for any business that ships globally or wants to make sure their product is delivered to the right person. It's perfect for e-commerce sites and healthcare organizations, among other industries. The API allows you to run real-time address verification on every single address that's entered into your system, and it standardizes international addresses to the formats specified by each country's postal authorities. This helps postal service providers in different countries quickly sort and deliver your direct mail.

AVS Address Verification Service
An AVS address verification service helps e-tailers and other card-not-present merchants verify the identity of customers. Using this tool helps prevent fraudulent transactions and chargebacks.
AVS is a widely used fraud prevention tool for card-not-present merchants. It compares a customer’s billing address to the address on file with their credit card issuer (the issuing bank). The AVS check returns a code that indicates how well the address entered matches up with the address information on file at the issuing bank.
Tumblr media
The AVS response code can be one of six different codes. These include: full match, partial match-address, partial match-zip code, no match, international and unavailable.
While AVS can help prevent fraudulent transactions, it’s also not an infallible tool. It’s not uncommon for a customer to provide an address that doesn’t match their bank’s address on file. There are a variety of reasons for this, from recent moves by the cardholder, to small issuing banks that don’t keep their records up to date, to frequent travelers who use family members’ addresses as their primary address.
When a merchant receives an AVS response, they can then make a decision on whether or not to accept or decline the transaction. They can do this based on the AVS match level of the order.
The decision about what levels of matching to require on your AVS checks depends on your customer base and risk tolerance, but implementing AVS rules incorrectly can cause a merchant to lose between 5% and 28% of their good orders. For this reason, it’s important to review the AVS rules that your payment processor provides and be sure they’re in line with your risk tolerance and business model.

Royal Mail Address Checker
Royal Mail Address Checker
The UK's postal system is far from static with thousands of changes made daily, based on property and business owners informing Royal Mail directly or the postmen and women delivering the mail making note of changes. This includes new houses being added, demolished buildings being removed and organisation names being updated when businesses move premises.
Tumblr media
With over 90,000 postal workers covering all of the UK's streets six days a week, Royal Mail are always informed of changes to addresses that could cause undelivered mail and parcels. Using the PAF database ensures that this information is automatically included in our Best Address Verification services which updates seamlessly in the background.
PAF License
The use of the PAF data is licensed by Royal Mail and is available to companies and organisations who are looking to verify addresses for their own internal purposes. This can be within a call centre or in the form of a software solution.

Fedex Address Verification API
A real world web service to validate and resolve addresses - fedex address verification api
The fedex address verification api is a smart solution that appropriately formats and returns a real-world address that closely resembles the one entered. This helps improve delivery predictability and reduce delivery failures.
Tumblr media
How it works
First, the inputted data is standardized and parsed according to official postal standards. This process makes sure that every single bit of the data is correctly labeled, including any minor mistakes that might be present.
Next, the data is checked against a relevant database, which is usually the authoritative database for whichever postal system you're using, like USPS. If a match is found, the data will be marked as "validated," which means it is a real, active address that can be delivered.
There are a few common problems that can cause an address to fail to be valid. Some of the most common ones are:
Input Errors – Missing or incorrect information is a common problem with addresses that go wrong. Examples of this include incorrect street name or city names, mistyped ZIP codes, and incorrect postal code numbers.
Incorrect information is similar to input errors, but it can occur at any point during the data input process. The problem is that it can be difficult to catch, especially if you don't have any sort of data quality screening or validation process in place.
