Alumni SHOUT OUT: Nicole McEwan Caradonna
This week we are trying something new. With the help of a fellow faculty member of the department, Cindy Maguire, we have decided to honor Nicole McEwan Caradonna as our first Alumni SHOUT OUT recipient for this week.
Nicole graduated from Adelphi University with a BA in Art Education in 2009. She then went onto LIU Post getting her MA in Mixed Media in 2013. She currently is teaching as a Visual Arts Teacher in the Plainedge School District. Getting this job in the Plainedge School District came only one week after graduating from Adelphi. Nicole started off as an art leave replacement for an elementary school teacher for 3 weeks. She was told that it was her dynamic and unique resume that got her the job. She thanks Adelphi for helping her prepare for life outside of college. Those three weeks filling in for a teacher on leave, lead to a lifelong career in Plainedge. She says, "I used to believe that 'who you know' was the key to landing a position in education, but I am living proof that is is 'who you are' that will get you the job."
Nicole has taught in four of the five schools within Plainedge, from grades K through 12th grade. She has taught many different courses, while advising art club and even receiving tenure in December of 2012. "I love that, in teaching, every day is completely different than the next, and the excitement and energy of your students can duel you even when you feel dead on your feet. It is very rewarding to see a group of students in charge of a large scale creative project such as putting together an art show or installation. To witness them build it from the ground up and bring together an entire school community is the most amazing thing. For me, those moments are what it is all about. I have the rare opportunity to teach them to see the world a little bit differently - exposing them to a world that doesn't have multiple choice answers." Nicole is so thankful to be their creative retreat in a world filled with standardized tests and endless assessments for students.
Adelphi University's Art Department would like to thank Nicole for being an inspiration for our current students as well as other alumni. Congratulations on your success and wish you the best with your future!
