Welcome, friends!

Hi there! I'm Adipose, a double tail betta. I live in a five gallon forest with my tank mates, Wilf the zebra nerite snail, three otocinclus babies that haven't been named yet, and a bunch of pond snails. I also have some pretty cool neighbors, ghost shrimp! They just can't visit us though because they don't like the stuff our human puts in for the plants.
Don't wanna be here? Send us removal request.

"oh my god stop criticizing young girls who like 50 Shades of Gray or Twilight you can’t tell them what they can and can’t read"
no we can’t but we have to protect young girls from mistaking abusive behavior for genuine affection at all costs

hey fish community, lets do some math! With bettas!
A betta costs around 10-12 dollars where I live so I’ll be using 11$, a bowl costs 4$, food 3$, gravel and plants 9$
So in all, if you get a betta, a bowl, food and plants and gravel, it’s about 27$. Now let’s take the average life span of a healthy well taken cared of betta, 4 years.
But wait, in a bowl the life span is a week to 2 years. So let’s take the 2 week span since that’s when mine died in a vase when I was younger. Every two weeks you get a new fish cause yours dies, for 4 years.
That’s 104 bought bettas which is pretty outrageous and a real owner would give up, but we’re talking mathematically not scientifically. that’s 1144$ spent on bettas minus the first betta.
Now let’s do it with a regular 5G tank. 25$ for a tank, gravel 4$, Silk plants 4$, omega food 5$, filter 10$. Perm material: filter floss 3$, ceramic rings 5$. Heater 20$, thermometer 4$, lid 10$, API testing kit 25$. This adds up to 114$.
With a 11$ fish, 124$. This fish will likely live for at least a year, most likely longer. But we’re doing 4 years? Let’s go with 1 fish per year and that cost adds up to 44$. So the total cost is 158$ to the 1144$ from before. That’s 158:1144.
In the long run, you’re saving money if you want a happy, long living fish.
basically, buying a bowl for a betta rather than a tank and knowing you’re going to want to have a fish around for at least 4 years, is going to cost more than if it were in a tank.
Get a tank and proper materials please.

ATTENTION ALL PET OWNERS, ESPECIALLY THOSE OF YOU IN WEST VIRGINIA
West Virginia is subject to an absolutely ridiculous pet ban. I am at a loss for what I should say as I’m absolutely shocked at this proposed list. Keep in mind this is the second list proposed with nothing taken off, only things added.
Say goodbye to your pufferfish, triggerfish, tetras, corydoras, ferrets, sugar gliders, hedgehogs, turtles, tortoises, salamanders, frogs, toads, and so much more if this list doesn’t change.
There are a million and one reasons why this law in insane, including:
There is no definition of what is considered “domestic” and what isn’t on the bill
They are banning entire orders, not just individual species
This has been considered a “living document”, meaning that the list can be changed at any time without public input
Pet stores will ultimately have to be shut down, putting people of out jobs and causing them to loose their businesses
Yes the bill provides for a permit to keep animals already owned prior to the bill, but there is no way any average pet owner will be able to afford or maintain the permit
The permit fees associated with this act will not cover even a small percentage of the millions of dollars that West Virginia will spend to implement these regulation
This bill was suppose to be set in place to regulate DANGEROUS animals. This law is literally called the “Dangerous Animals Act.” The lawmakers literally lied to the public about the intentions of the bills, saying that it would only ban:            ”Constrictor snakes greater than six feet, and venomous snakes; Alligators and caimans; Bears; Big cats; Canids; Primates”
And that doesn’t even cover how it’s going to effect the pet trade in WV. Here are a few quotes from USARK and some people who run Specialty Pets, a local pet store in Nitro, WV.
USARK:
Similar legislation in Ohio led to a $2,900,000 temporary-housing facility for animals that could not be kept by responsible owners.
This law will cost West Virginia millions of dollars more to implement than the money raised from permits.
A proper fiscal estimate should be presented before hastily passing a law that will cost the state millions of dollars.
Money has been spent since the bill was passed in Ohio on June 6, 2012 by the state and legislators who are still making changes to the law.
Caging requirements have still not been finalized in Ohio, over 18 months after the law passed.
The new law led to millions of dollars invested by Ohio, and West Virginia HB 4393 is very similar.
Additional financial hardships will be placed on pet owners by requiring costly permits and may force them to surrender, or even release, their beloved pets
The newly-created “Dangerous Wild Animal Board” will review species annually so pet owners must constantly be concerned with their pets being added as a “dangerous wild animal.””
More can be read from USARK here: http://usark.org/2014-blog/west-virginia-hb-4393-update/
West Virginia Reptile Watch:
“How will the law affect the aquarium industry in WV?
AQUARIUM TRADE IMPACT of just a small sample of the proposed list for the Dangerous Wild Animal Law in WV and recommendations for clarification.
Order: Characiformes (piranha fish, tiger fish) All species
This Order includes about 2000 fish particularly every tetra fish in the aquarium hobby.
This is far to broad and needs to be narrowed down to individual species the board wishes to ban.
Order Siluriformes (candiru catfish, walking catfish) All species
This invariably will include all plecos, algae eaters, cory cats all harmless tropical ornamental and all other cat fish in the aquarium trade
This needs to be revised to include the EXACT target species that the board is trying to ban.
Order Tetraodontiformes (trigger fish, file fish, puffer fish) All species (These species present health (toxin) and safety risks to humans or have invasive abilities that threaten native fish populations. )
Invasion is impossible as trigger fish, file fish and puffer fish are marine animals as WV is no where near a saltwater body there is no threat. The toxins mentioned must be ingested “Certain internal organs, such as liver, and sometimes the skin, contain tetrodotoxin and are highly toxic to most animals when eaten; nevertheless, the meat of some species is considered a delicacy in Japan, Korea, and China when prepared by specially trained chefs who know which part is safe to eat and in what quantity. “
Family Gobiidae (Goby family) All species The main article for this category is Gobiidae.
The gobies are a family (the Gobiidae) of freshwater and marine ray-finned fish belonging to order Perciformes. This category consists of articles on genera and species in the goby family.
Saltwater is invariably and likely unintentional in this proposed ban list due to the fact that the ORDER of certain species were addressed and not the actual animal or species that was intended for the ban.
All marine life on this list needs to be excluded as there is NO realistic threat or risk of invasion applicable. Species listed in the proposed ban represent NO threat to the ecology or health of anyone in WV and make up a massive percentage of the pet aquarium trade.
By including harmless aquatic and ornamental pet fish both fresh water and marine, this law will be forcing ALL pet stores out of business and will remove billions of dollars in tax income and revenue from this state.
Say Good by to your pet shops WV
The pet trade is a massive income for the state and it generates millions of dollars for the state. Pet Shops can not exist without having the ability to sell common safe ornamental fish and invertebrates, the very same animals sold the world over that have caused no damage to anyone or anything. The inclusion of the above fresh water and marine fish is completely unwarranted and is a knee jerk reaction to buzz words such as “poisonous” as in the case of the puffer fish. The puffer fish in and of itself is not “venomous” if it bites you it has no venom , if you however kill and eat its liver it can be poisonous. I have never heard of anyone buying a puffer from a local fish shop and eating it, its absurd to even consider The trigger and puffer much like the tetra are in the wrong “order” that is the real issue. They are trying to ban two or three fish and think that all fish in the order must be as dangerous as the two or three that they really want banned. The list is to far reaching and based up on complete speculation and worst case scenarios, it needs to be revised with a more balanced approach or West Virginia will lose every pet shop , and pet retailer including Walmart and all secondary outlets for such animals. This will cause a severe impact on the state economy the likes of which no one can truly imagine.”
PLEASE REBLOG AND SIGNAL BOOST THIS!!!!
I know there isn’t much that can be done from a reblog on a website, but I wan’t everyone to know what is happening here and what can happen in every state if the pet community underestimates pet ban laws, the HSUS, PETA, and other “animal rights” organizations that pay lawmakers to ban animals.

Hey guys. I’ve been going through a pretty rough time, and I’ve had to pick up a second job. I’ve been really stressed and neglectful of my needs, and I don’t want that to end up carrying over to my pets and have them suffer. So I’m thinking about putting my fish up for adoption. I don’t know if anyone is interested, i wouldn’t charge much - probably just enough to help cover the cost of shipping and proper shipping supplies.
Right now I have: 1 super delta male 1 (mature) crowntail female 1 (adolescent) combtail female 2 panda cory cats 1 violet cory About 15 cherry shrimp.
I also have a bunch of plants, fertilizer, and other supplies. Honestly I just want my pets to be well loved and cared for, and the position I’m in, i might not be able to provide that for much longer.
Sorry about the long text post. Please let me know if any of you are interested at all.

My dad and I made this fishtank for my mum for Christmas a few years ago with dollhouse furniture. I thought it was pretty rad
Edit: Anyone wishing to recreate this should be extremely cautious. We tried to make sure everything used was aquarium grade - no tight spots (for big fish) or sharp edges. We had no fish injuries in the two years it was running but I definitely will say it isn’t the easiest tank to maintain in terms of the biological filter. I work with fish, so I knew what to be wary of - but if you’re careful it looks rad and your fish *should* be fine.

You may wonder why I have not been posting pictures of Adipose lately.  Since the creating of this blog Adipose's health has slowly been declining.  Anything that I attempted only seemed to make it worse.  He was becoming very lethargic and would spend large amounts of time just laying at the bottom instead of excitedly coming to see me.  Yesterday college ended for the year and I sent my tank and all its inhabitants to my boyfriend's for the summer since I will be in Florida for an internship.  As he is moving starting today his mom decided the tank was not allowed in the house so the animals were going to remain in the house in their travel containers.  This morning my boyfriend awoke to find Adipose dead.  I am sad to see what was once a beautiful fish leave, but it does not surprise me.  Between his poor condition, the stress of moving, and not being in his tank, it was just too much for him.

First of all: HELL YEAH I GOT THE JOB!!!!
Now let me show you the betta section at my work! Everyone of them has an own tank (except the females) and they have plenty of space to swim!
I feel so bad for the cute blue white plakat. He lives there for months now and noone wants to buy him. They also have this gorgeous green halfmoon. I swear I’d have bought him right away if I had another free tank!

R.I.P. Ianto Jones the Betta
Hello, friends.
My name is Melissa, one of Ianto Jones’ owners (and the one that runs this betta care blog on his behalf). It is with a heavy heart that I share with you today the news that Ianto passed away last night.
Over the past few months, we’ve been struggling with him; he came down with something that we just couldn’t beat. No matter what we tried, he just wasn’t recovering. When he developed the tumour not too long ago, we knew it was truly the beginning of the end. The other owner and I even discussed yesterday, just mere hours before his passing, the possibility of humanely euthanizing him this weekend.
Ianto was just over two years old when he passed. Since we brought him home in May of 2012, we’ve learned so much about bettas and what they need to thrive. We’ve also learned to love their cute grumpy faces and their fierce personalities unconditionally.
Ianto will never be forgotten.
I will still be running this blog as myself from now on and keeping his image as its face. I will continue striving to make new friends and help others in need when it comes to their beloved pets.
S.I.P, my little warrior. Mommy misses you so much already.
