I made some Ghibli, but not AI
I was cleaning out some papers, drawings and notes from my desk. I came across a hack for meditating, dealing with anxiety or general intrusive thoughts. I won’t get into more details on that part. I have not been capable of sitting still, closing my eyes and meditate. I find doing things meditative or calming. I often drawn or write to help my mind jumping around too much. It works! Anyways,

Books in 2024
In 2024, my reading volume was low. But I want to keep the tradition of listing the books I read and enjoyed. The ones I relished are indicated with a 🫰emoji. So here goes. 🫰The Body Keeps Score – Bessel van der Kolk I came across this book while listening to an interview of the Bessel van der Kolk. It has great insights into how trauma can change brain structure to how it affects the body…

Komorebi 木漏れ日
Recently, I wrote about Prefect Days. Movies never really change my outlook too much, that usually books end up doing. Like the main character, I often find myself watching shards of sunlight. It comes gently through the leaves of a large tree. I was delighted that there is word for this. It is called Komorebi 木漏れ日, a Japanese word. On reading more about Komorebi, I came across this nice…

December aesthetics
I like the month of December for its moderate aesthetics. Everything is in moderation it seems. It's a good time to put on your shoes. Sit idly in public transit systems. Read a book or listen to a song.
Often the period when the year ends, tends to have a familiar aesthetic. Mostly laced with catching a Australian Test match in the mornings, finding the weather quite and pleasant. Sometimes cold in the wee hours of the morning. The winter sets in but the trees do not really shed their leaves. The sun can beat down but not too harshly. Traveling around, moving through the city is easier and…

"Perfect Days" is perfect
It has been a while since I wrote about a movie. I came across “Perfect Days” on my MUBI subscription with Amazon Prime Video. The first time around, I managed to see only 10 minutes of the film. There was something arresting about the film so I did not abandon watching it altogether. A week later, I started the film from the beginning, and I was not disappointed. Image taken from a scene.…

WordPress, Matt Mullenweg, Contributions and Community
WordPress, Matt Mullenweg, the Community and Open Source Contribution
The view outside the WordCamp Kerala 2024 conference in Kozhikode. I started writing this post while on a hopping flight from Kozhikode to Bangalore to Pune. The night time layover hours in Bangalore allowed me to write down some thoughts about the WordPress community and some things going on in the project. I have mostly not commented about the WordPress situation over the past two months.…

Quirky Authenticity is better than Happy Syntheticity
Recently, I on a trip to Bangalore, I visited Cafe Saanchi. I ended up visiting it twice over 5 days with different friends. The owner, a cheerful Paarsi or Farsi (I am not sure I heard him correctly) with a handlebar moustache offered to help us discover what all they had on offer. The cafe is above a antique furniture shop and the antique part is pretty much all around the cafe too. The food…

Thoughts on the light that could be WordCamp India!
Traditional brass lamp using melted butter as fuel. by Bigul Malayi is licensed under CC-CC0 1.0 The rarefied micro-community of WordPress users who travel to WordCamps and run small to large WordPress projects around India, have been talking about an interesting project: WordCamp India! A large multi-day WordCamp of thousands of people coming and doing cool WordPress things with maybe a couple…

There is Karate inside you: Finding Mentors in open-source & WordPress
Back in 1991, VCR cassette libraries were around every nook and corner of Bombay, slightly unaware of the foreboding change that cable tv was going to bring in. These libraries introduced the latest American made in Indian households and ours was no exception. Growing up, I was riveted by a movie called the Karate Kid. I managed to watch it at least a hundred times. Source Okay, maybe a dozen…

Building in the open: Being comfortable under the sun!
Building a project in the open, under the glare of user feedback and community expectation requires getting comfortable in that space.
I love going on long walks. It could be a long walk through a garden, forest or a busy street. I find walking for hours very meditative, even more than any meditation routine. My thoughts on walking echo those of writer and activist Rebecca Solnit in “Wanderlust”. I suspect that the mind, like the feet, works at about three miles an hour. If this is so, then modern life is moving faster than the…

About Open-Source
The ideas of open-source are inherently authentic and what drives me to get involved in projects like WordPress.org. My take on open-source.
Why do you like open-source? Why are you so passionate about this idea? Why do you like working on an open-source project (in my case WordPress.org)?  These are some versions of the same question I am asked, and the best answer I have managed to give them is captured by this quote from the popular sci-fi book “The Second Foundation” by Isaac Asimov. He never created a finished product. Finished…

Goncharov and a community building masterclass
The Tumblr phenomenon called "Goncharov" and a community building masterclass by its users. #goncharov #tumblr #opensource
The past few weeks as the Twitter drama was unfolding, I saw some tweets about moving to Tumblr. I was curious to check if I would spend more time on my Tumblr account if I downloaded the app on my phone. That worked! I now do spend a lot of time on it. You can follow me on Tumblr at tumblr.com/adityakane. On it I came across several thousands of post on “Goncharov. 1973” a fictional made up…
