It is overall an uplifiting story, despite all the politics Takarazuka loves inserting to make the middle part drag. (eyeroll)

[Translation] Takarazuka harassment incident: comment by deceased's sister

In relation to the death of a 25-year-old member of the Takarazuka Revue, the lawyer representing the bereaved family held a press conference in Tokyo on 27 January, where the sister, herself an active member of the Takarazuka Revue, made her comment.

She harshly criticised the Takarazuka Revue, saying that it is a world where people are routinely power-harassed on a daily basis, and that the actions her sister were subjected to by the upperclassmen were 'nothing less than power harassment'.

The full statement is as follows.

As a family member of the deceased, for the sake of my precious sister, I would like to express my thoughts as a current member of the Takarazuka Revue. No matter how much you try to use the word 'guidance' to describe those actions, they cannot be described as such. It is power harassment.

The members of the Revue have signed a written oath made by the Takarazuka Revue to "not engage in any form of power harassment".

Nevertheless, the Takarazuka Revue is a world where it is normal for people to engage in power harassment on a daily basis.

From my perspective, having been a member of that world until now, the power harassment my sister was subjected to was vicious and extremely terrible behaviour far beyond anything on that level.

If you look at the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare's definition of power harassment, what my sister was subjected to was nothing but that.

Takarazuka is not exempt from the law. None of this is excusable just because it is Takarazuka.

It is unacceptable that, even now, the company only listens to those who have committed power harassment and ignores the testimony of third parties.

The company defends the perpetrators of power harassment, claiming to be protecting the students, but if that is the case, aren't the people who gave testimonies of the power harassment they witnessed, and my sister, students as well?

The term "student" (seito) creates ambiguity but the perpetrators of power harassment are full-fledged members of society, and Takarazuka Revue is a corporation.

As a company, they should look at the facts from an impartial perspective.

The company has announced that it is reforming its schedule and working on various reform measures, but I feel that they are downplaying my sister's death and obfuscating the issue.

Please do not cause further suffering to my sister and to us, the bereaved family.

My sister is not unwell, nor is she in hospital.

She will never come back.

I wonder how much they value my sister’s life.

The company repeatedly uses the words "in good faith" and "with sincerity" to appeal to the public, but in reality, I don't believe that they are being sincere with the bereaved family even now.

Please do not waste any more time drawing this out.

Please think about my precious sister's life and face up to it.

I'll make for the 2022 Furukawa version eventually, but it's not a priority at the moment.

2016 Shirota version subs will be remade for the BD version at a later date, with the updated translation.

I don't have the 2016 Inoue version BD, so there won't be a BD version of the subs. But I'll update the translation when I have time.

Mei-chan no Shitsuji (Hoshigumi 2011) subs

AT LAST. between travel, wedding planning, and covid, this kind of fell by the wayside for a bit, but IT'S DONE. my first two act!!!

first of all, wow, otoha minori is great. that could be my entire translation notes. she's so cute. all the musumeyaku in this show are so cute. and the otokoyaku are just as good!! we have suave ikemen beni, loudmouth osananajimi miyaruri, and villain yurika, please, i am a simple creature, act 2 was so hard to sub because i kept blushing. plus, tiny baby kiki and coto! i didn't actually watch this show in full before i started my sub, and wanting to know what happens next was SUCH a motivator, lol. if you're familiar with the manga, it's pretty close except for some things left out or rearranged; if you're familiar with the drama, it is QUITE different. tl;dr this show is SO MUCH FUN, and if you like tropey 00s shoujo it is not to be missed.

TL notes:

yamada tami. all of her lines switch between several regional dialects, so i just kind of..... went ham ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i do not believe in localizing honorifics when a story's set in japan, so. pretend you're all reading manga in 2004 with the little vocab guide in the back cover! i DID translate ojousama, because it's like, half the dialogue, and "my lady" felt romantic.

there's a line about "demon hunting" re: shinobu, which makes sense in the manga where he's referred to as the "white demon" - this got dropped from the script, so i localized it out.

In scene 4 "East China Sea", there is a song that mentions Qingming Festival. While the day is marked by people playing respects to the dead, it was also a time when young couples traditionally started courting.

The math in the song "24000 kisses" doesn't add up, but that's how the Japanese lyrics were...

'An Actor's Revenge (Yukinojou Henge)' subs

This was done mostly aurally, but even if it hadn't been, some parts were just so hard that there was no way I'd have gotten them right. So know this translation is far less accurate than usual.

I do love this play. After so many years thinking of it, I was starting to wonder if I hadn't imagined my appreciation but I was right. It's got a lot of wins. It's not perfect though. The resolution of the plot is so underwhelming you barely realize they've solved all the points. Still, it was worth all the hair I lost to translate this.

My beloved Takane Fubuki~

And of course, Ichiro, Tom, they're all wonderful. This was also Ohana's first Grand Theater as the top musumeyaku. Plus, there are some scenes all the characters would later become top stars/musumeyaku, it's impressive. And baby Touko as Fubuki's minion! So cute!

These subs were timed to a broadcast on Sky Stage, and I'm not sure if they'd fit the VHS version.

The Winter's Tale subs

Scripts for other than Grand Theatre musicals are very hard to come by, but thanks to this excellent script collection for the Shakespeare series I managed to translate The Winter's Tale. There's no way I could have done this one by ear! There are a couple of lines where they depart from the script and I'm just taking a wild stab. (They're marked out with question marks - any help much appreciated.)

Takarazuka's response to the recent death of an actress

Following coverage of a press conference held by the lawyer of the family of the Takarazuka actress who passed away on Sept. 30, Takarazuka has published a report of findings from their 3rd-party legal team's investigation into the incident.

The following was a high-speed team effort of translation, editing, and translation notes carried out by a group of Takarazuka fans, myself included.

"The Rose of Versailles (2013 Moon) (Ranju André)" subs

This is a project in collaboration with @matchala who was just too patient to fill in the gaps, retranslate, edit, retime, and whatnot some partial old subs I had. Suddenly, it's all brand new! I'm just so happy this can finally be released!

To be honest, this was probably the worst adaption I've seen of Berubara. I mean, the gaidens are probably worse, but I bet they have more plot than this. They've cut so much of the original performances, they should have just made it like the gala concerts and it would have been more pleasing. STILL, this was the only tome Ranju Tomu was in a Berubara, and for many other reasons, this aberration became very dear to me.

(Also, I kinda love the selfish portrayal of Oscar Masao made.)

Notice this is timed to the show with Ranju Tomu as André. The script is the same as the others of 2013 Tsuki, but the timing won't sync as they're not really robots to do it all the same lol (They almost are when you notice they get almost every single word in the script but still not there). So, beware.

Thank you so much to the person who sent me the script so I could finally complete my subs!

Still, these are subs I did ten years ago, right when they released the show. I did my best to force myself to revise them properly but I’m terrible looking over things I’ve done.

Some trigger warnings: gunshots, death, mention of suicide

I like the songs a lot and the play as a whole, but I recognize it doesn’t have much depth, the plot doesn’t make that much sense (though that’s not on Takarazuka), etc. It’s a very average, basically a filler play. But I still love it. Could be emotional memories?

This show features Hokushou Kairi as the nibante (the revue was actually the first time I saw her in nibante feathers seeing that she didn’t have any for Oceans), plus all the people you’ll expect from masaogumi. (There is also very tiny Mahiro in her kumigawari days but that’s probably just for me lol)

These subs were timed to the DVD, so they won’t fit the raku version, which is what the Sky Stage usually shows (but it had showed the DVD version before!)
