Work Day
Today I spend about an hour on correcting and improving my transcript. taking every comment from the peer review into consideration to see what I should change. I also went over my first interview to find out that I would say out loud and what parts of the recording I would incorporate in the podcast.

I liked how you explained what the podcast was about and wrote quotes about what the author said and how she uses it to sound like herself. You did a very good job of relating it to your podcast. I think this is a good podcast for all of us to sound like ourselves in our podcasts.
Blog Post #10
Sounding Like Yourself
This podcast is mainly about finding your own voice and speaking true to yourself. In a podcast you wanna sound like yourself or it won’t be an effective podcast. They talk about how it takes time to find your own voice. The women featured says that when she talks over the radio she says in her head “what would you really say” or “how would i really say that”. That’s how she makes sure she’s speaking true to herself. The one thing they bring up is how you can sound like yourself when you’re reading something. You have to read it the way you think the writer wrote it. They talk about how to deal with “flat liners” or people that aren’t good with interviews or sound like they don’t care. They say the best way to deal with it is to get them to a point of comfort then let them go crazy and talk as much as they want.
This podcast will be useful to my podcast in regards to how to find my voice. The things they say about interview tips are irrelevant because i already conducted all three of mine. But, the podcast gave many useful tips on how to speak and how to sound genuine. This is helpful to me because even in my interview I found my voice changing on how i thought it should sound when i should have kept my voice how it always sounds so my podcast would be true to me.

On Interviewing A Racist
This podcast was about Rob Rosenthal who interviewed Al, who interviewed Richard Spencer who is a white nationalist. Rosenthal throughout the interview kept asking really good questions about Al’s decisions on what question to ask. The whole podcast focused more on how did Al know what questions to ask without offending and being open minded with a person that has different views than him. Rosenthal played parts of Al’s interview with Spencer and then asked him questions about the question choice he made.
I feel like this interview showed me different ways that podcasts can flow; that not all of them need to be the same. Rosenthal in his podcast plays a small part of the interview and asks questions to Al about the choices he made. I feel that it is a different way to play my interviews, I can break them down and talk about them in little sections. He also does not use any kind of music; it made me think about the music choices and that not always, music is going to be the best choice for a podcast. I also liked how calmed both Rosenthal and Al talked in their interviews.

2. Both trips were not long, about two weeks, do you think it was enough to gain something from them?
3. What do you think your students learn from these experiences?
4. Are you planning on taking another trip next summer? If so, to where?
5. Do you think it is important for your students to experience new cultures? Why?

“The First Lady on the Importance of Studying Abroad”, The Obama White House, Youtube, Published on Mar. 22, 2014, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=493uXtbp95Q
This speech of Michelle Obama was given in China and she talked about the importance of studying abroad. In her speech, she talked about how important is that experience of another country and other cultures “because that’s how you develop that habit of cooperation, you do it by immersing yourself in one another’s cultures, by learning each other’s stories, by getting past each other’s stereotypes and misconceptions that too often divide us”. This speech talks about the issue more deeply, like trying to end stereotypes about other countries and cultures, which I think is very powerful and important. Michelle Obama also gives examples of how other countries impact America or how we impact the other countries, for example, architecture, clean air techniques, designs of buildings, all things that students can enrich their knowledge from and expand their creativity to bring it all back to their country and incorporate it in their majors.
This speech will be very useful to my podcast because it goes beyond what most people think studying abroad is all about.
“Top Five Major Fields of Study U.S. Study Abroad Students” Produced by the Insitute of International Education, in partnership with the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs U.S. Department of State, Nov. 16, 2016, https://p.widencdn.net/p8fxny/Open-Doors-2016-Presentation
This image was taken from the opendoors 2016 presentation. It really intrigued me to know that majors take a role in education abroad. I was not expecting Foreign Languages and International Studies to be that low of a percentage, I expected them to have the highest. Also expected the Fine and Applied Arts to have a high percentage since they can learn and enrich from the experience and it will expose them to incredible art that is rare in the U.S. or non-existent.
The opendoors presentation includes incredible data that will help me with my podcast and it will also be a guide to see how it relates to UK’s campus. It will guide me in my quest to discover why are students not studying abroad and the majors that make them go abroad.

Blog Post #8
Stroud, April H. "Who Plans (Not) to Study Abroad? An Examination of U.S. Student Intent." Journal of Studies in International Education, vol. 14, no. 5, 11/01/2010, pp. 491-507. EBSCOhost, doi:10.1177/1028315309357942. http://web.a.ebscohost.com.ezproxy.uky.edu/ehost/detail/detail?vid=0&sid=3f7fc739-ed37-4cb5-83ab-c2a4748a947c%40sessionmgr4006&bdata=JnNpdGU9ZWhvc3QtbGl2ZSZzY29wZT1zaXRl#AN=55060788&db=a9h
This scholarly article talks about how highly the studying abroad option is becoming for students all over the country. It explains that schools are changing or adjusting their resources to meet the mandate of students that want to study abroad. It also gives some issues of why students may find it difficult to study abroad.
This article will help me with my podcast because it addresses the issue of universities trying to find a way to help students reach their goals to study abroad. It also touches the issue of why students find it hard to go abroad, like parental income or how gender and race are factors in the decision of studying abroad.
Sealey, Lorinda J. and Donna Hathorn. "The Lived Experience of Honduran and USA Nursing Students Working Together in a Study Abroad Program." Qualitative Report, vol. 19, no. 48, 12/1/2014, pp. 1-20. EBSCOhost, ezproxy.uky.edu/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=a9h&AN=99879373&site=ehost-live&scope=site.
This scholarly article gives one great example of a study abroad opportunity. It is about students that want to be nurses and they go to Honduras. The article talks about how they gained new skills just from being there.
This article will be a great example for my podcast because it is a real study abroad experience that happened for students. They gained communication skills and more sense of the culture around them. I will be able to relate this study to my podcast.

Response to Duyen-Anh
@duyen-anhvwrd110-016, I think you have done a good job at finding a problem on campus and how it affects you and others. I liked how well you explained the problem international students face every day with their nutrition. I also liked how you gave some solutions to the problem, especially about the international foods they should have at all UK’s dinning. however, I think your presentation would have been stronger if you gave more details and more examples and not just the ones about you and your friends. I would recommend finding other international students from different cultures and see if they face the same challenges. I know that sometimes I just go back home because I miss my homemade Cuban food. sometimes my dad comes over during the weekends because I really need the food I am accustomed to.

Response to Makaylah
@makaylahswrd110-016 , I think You have done a good job finding a good problem around campus. I agree with how important exercise is and how inconveniently far for some students is the Johnson Center. I really liked how you presented your idea, you seemed very confident. I liked how you came with a solution for this problem. The only problem I had during the presentation is the picture of the small gym. I think it would be too small for a whole dorm building and it will be crowded like the JC. I recommend that for your final podcast you should include ideas of areas inside the dorms where this solution would work. I think you should also see what percentage of students actually work out and the ones that don’t, what are their excuses.

This picture has a really strong message and it made me feel really sad. This evokes the emotional side of people because I am pretty sure if it was an adult instead of a kid it wouldn't get the same reaction.
There is a smoke hand around this child’s neck, the child looks scared and sad. If you weren’t able to see the words that are attached to the image you may think that an actual person is strangling this kid, but it’s not. The smoke hand looks pretty realistic which makes this add more powerful. But once the words are put to it you can see that it’s talking about the smoke not the actual person. So this add is saying that just because your kids aren’t directly smoking cigarettes, the kids are still in hailing the smoke and they are still recieved the effects from it. The audience is the people with kids who smoke cigarettes and if I was a parent who smoked and saw this add I wouldn’t be able to smoke anymore because I would feel like I was killing my child.

This art piece is by Cuban-American artist Mario Sanchez. Right away this piece of art catches your attention with all the vivid colors, it does not have any words but the image speaks for itself. In the image, you can see a woman made out of nature, a representation of mother nature, I suppose. In the right side you can see a gun, but not any kind, a gun made out of factories and nature destructive things. Mother nature catches your eye with all the beauty she radiates, there is a river flowing down but it can also be viewed as her tears. The gun itself is a strong image but what makes it stronger is the human hand holding it, applying that all the destruction that happens to nature is the work of humans. It really makes an audience question if we are helping the environment or destroying it. Personally, it makes me disappointed with the human species because out of all the species, we are the only ones destroying our planet.

I did find the pair peer review more helpful than the group peer review as well. like you said, while working in pairs they put more attention to your paper and that was really helpful.
Blog Post #5
I did find the peer review sessions very helpful. It is really good to get a second opinion on things as well as have someone read over your grammar. I preferred the pair peer review over the group peer review. I felt like it was much easier to explain yourself to only one other person and they could really spend a lot of time focusing on your paper and improvements. I liked the reverse outline strategy as well, its something you don’t usually think about. So it’s nice to see how people see the main topic of each paragraph. If I were to change anything I would just prefer to not do the group reviews, or at least give more time so that we can put forth a good review to each other.

I believe peer review is really helpful and the one that helped me the most was working in pairs. When working in pairs you focus all your attention on one person and you try to give as much feedback and helpful tips as possible. Reverse outline helped me understand how my paragraphs were organized and if it made sense to organize them that way. Based on that information I was able to organize and reword my paragraphs differently in a way that would make sense. Working in groups was helpful but not that much since in a group we focused on multiple papers and not just one. The belieber vs. doubter helped me organize my ideas a little better and focus on the things I needed a little more help with, like my thesis.

I did not know about the comedian show every Wednesday; I think I would be very interested in reading about what happened to Blazer dining. I also feel that the gym topic is interesting, I go to the gym as soon as it opens at 6am and it is still packed!

The gym attracted my attention because its so far away. I come here frequently and its almost two miles from my dorm. The college has only one gym even though there are 30,000 students on campus. This shows because the gym is frequently packed. Usually you have to wait to use a machine or wander aimlessly until you stumble upon an empty one. Why is the gym not in the center of the college? By the gym being closer to honors and athlete housing does that make it easier for them to stay in shape? Why doesnt every dorm building have an exercise room?

Blog Post #4

This construction is kind of in the middle of important buildings and I see it every day. There is construction all over campus and it makes me wonder why?. This construction does not have any description of what is going on, unlike the one for the new student center, that construction has pictures of what it will look like and when it will be done by. It makes me ask myself why are they doing it? was there a problem? when will it be done by? are they trying to remodel or fix something?

Bowman’s Den dinner is loved by most students but is it healthy to eat there every day? It caught my attention how it is always full of students and the lines are extremely long around lunch time. Students are eating there every day and it is not healthy. It makes me wonder if they care at all about what they are putting in their bodies. “We are what we eat”. Are students aware of the nutritional values of their food? is the university okay with fast food? do they care about the students’ health? are there any health information centers?

The International Center is surrounded by countries’ flags and it caught my attention. I have looked at that building a couple of times and the main reason was to find the flag of the country I was born in, but it was not there. UK has a lot of international students and I am sure I am not the only one whose flag is not up there. It makes me question why is the reason it is not there also why those specific flags are the only ones there?.

I am glad your speech went just as planned and that you felt confident while talking in front of the whole class. Try to find something that intrigues you in the school, something you know you will have questions for.
Blog Post #3
My speech did go as I had planned. At first I wasn’t sure if I would talk loud enough, or stare at my index cards the whole time. I think I talked loud enough because everyone seemed to be engaged. I also knew more of my speech than I had originally thought, so I didn’t actually end up looking at my index cards the whole time like I had thought before hand. I was definitely more confident than I thought I was going to be. Looking back on it I wish I had not moved as much as I did while I was talking. I needed to have better posture and stand still while I was presenting. It would have made me appear even more confident than I already was. My strongest point I feel like was actually projecting my voice loud enough so everyone could hear me clearly. I could have made more eye contact around the room instead of staring at the wall in front of me as well. I was looking up from my index cards, but my eyes only stayed in one place. I am kind of concerned on what I am going to write about for the space analysis assignment. I will find it difficult to find a space to write about in so much depth. I am also concerned about remembering all of the steps we have to write in and being able to find an important question to discuss.

I was almost sure that my speech was going to be almost perfect, but it wasn’t. I got a 48/50, which is not bad, but not perfect. I did have a good opening line, a place to describe and the description and details were good, but I messed up on the time. It was under the 1 minute 30 seconds requirement. I had practiced my speech the night before a couple of times, and it was just a little bit over the requirement, so I thought it was going to be fine. When I stood in front of everybody to give my speech, all I wanted to do was get it over with so I did not take my time and started talking slow enough for people to understand what I was saying, but also fast enough to where I did not have any breaks in my speech or more details to talk about. I am worried that in the upcoming assignment I will not give enough information or I will miss something important to my Space Analysis Essay. While looking at the example of the quilts essay, it made me wonder what space/place I was going to talk about, and I have not found what to talk about yet, which worries me.
