A really important message
Hey all,
You know who i am (i guess if you’re following me), but you may not know that i am a proud Armenian. You also may not know about the significance of today, April 24.
April 24 is Armenian Genocide Remembrance day. One hundred years ago on this day, the Ottoman government (what is now Turkey) started the systematic elimination of my people. They took our land and 1.5 million of our lives over the next four years. My family is originally from Musa Dagh, one of the places least affected by the Genocide. This is where my ancestors stood against the Turkish armies bent on their extermination.
I am immensely proud of my heritage. I am also incredibly ashamed of the United States and all other countries who refuse the historical facts of this time in history. I ask you to educate yourself on this topic, and see it for what it was. A good place to start would be Ambassador Morgenthau’s Story. These are the memoirs of the US ambassador to the Ottoman Empire during the time of the genocide. Another source would be to read or watch Forty Days of Musa Dagh. This novel by Franz Werfel is based heavily in historical fact and shows what we have been through.

RIP Rekia Boyd: November 5, 1989 - March 21, 2012
“Not only did he take away my sister’s life, but he took the peace of all of our lives away. Do you know how bad that hurts?” - Martinez Sutton.
Martinez Sutton is Rekia Boyd’s brother and spoke out on the pain experienced (in a society where Black pain and sentience are denied; which is the same reason why people justify the State’s violence on us) because of the extrajudicial execution of his sister Rekia Boyd. Dante Servin is the cop who killed her; his charges were thrown out today.
This is not a moment for “see, State violence impacts Black women ‘too.’” Drop the “too” once and for all. Realize that Black women’s bodies have always been a site of violence from the State and that we have never escaped State violence nor anti-Blackness. (Nor am I interested in the repetitive violent false equalization of intraracial civilian crime [that every race experiences, yet is only viewed as “pathological” if among Black people] with centuries of State violence, structural oppression and anti-Blackness, so don’t reply with that here.)
Sutton also reportedly said “when we walked in, we already knew we lost,” speaking of Rekia’s family. I understand why he said that; what hope would he have when statistics alone reveal unlikely accountability for State violence? When Blackness itself is treated as “criminal” for existing? She did…nothing wrong. Nothing at all. Other than be Black and be near a cop. And that is deemed more than enough in an anti-Black society.

Note
A big internet hug and cup of tea to everyone out there with depression or other mental health issues. Remember today to try and shut out all those who say things like "think about the effect you are having on others" etc. That is such total bollocks. The most important person in YOUR life should always be YOU. And you are important.

When I was born I was diagnosed with cystic hygroma. The cyst had covered the entire left side of my face. For the first few years of my life I stayed at Johns Hopkins Hospital. I had to have many procedures done to have the cyst removed. Sadly I was left blind in one eye and deaf in one ear. I also have no control over the left side of my mouth. But I dont let any of these things stop me! It’s taken me 30 to get this mindset though. I wasted to many years not liking myself and feeling upset over having cystic hygroma. But I refuse to feel that way anymore, so I decided to start vlogging. Its something I always wanted to do but I was to scared to do it because of the way that I looked.I’m glad that vlogging, the #blackoutday and the Tumblr community have helped me to come out of my shell. http://youtu.be/U7EM5_GCFfk #NoShame

Kappa Phi Gamma for #ReclaimTheBindi!
Kappa Phi Gamma Sorority, Inc. is the first South Asian Sorority in North America. The sisterhood instills the pride of culture, womanhood, and self. Although Kappa Phi Gamma was founded as a South Asian sorority, she has expanded the warmth of her Sisterhood to any and all motivated young women, willing to make a difference. Sisters of different backgrounds learn about the importance of South Asian culture and work together as one on promoting cultural awareness on their campus and in their community.
We would like to commend reclaimthebindi for initiating this movement to allow females of similar backgrounds to share their stories and to empower young South Asian women worldwide. Culture is not a costume and appropriation is not equal to appreciation.
