This is my evaluation of the project as a whole
Environment Evaluation
Introduction
In this project we were given the task of researching and looking at different types of environment and how the environment can influence difference pieces of art and different processes. In this project we looked at a multitude of processes to see how they can relate to the environment and to see which ones gave us the best results. The first thing we started with was by creating a mind map. In my mind map, I decided to create an A3 mind map. My thinking behind this was to put the word environment in the middle and then either side of this, putting both urban and rural features. I wanted to do this as it would lead excellently into my project as I create pieces which both were urban as well as rural. I felt this mind map could show how different they are and how different they can be portrayed in art. I was very pleased with my mind map as I felt I used a number of different buildings ranging from skyscrapers to tree houses. This gave a good range and impression on the urban side of environment. On the other side I drew a number of plants and animals which gave an excellent impression on the rural side of the environment. This could allow the audience to see how different they are and how they compare to one another.
In this project I carried out four artist studies, one was Katsushika Hokusai. This was the artist who used to base my lino print around. The reason for this was because I was a fan of the way he used landscape to create pieces of work; I thereby designed my lino around his kind of style. The next artist I researched was Clare Halifax; this was the artist who I was going to base my screen print around. I wanted to create one in her kind of style but instead of using buildings like she does. I wanted to use people to give my own meaning and twist to the print and so that it was different to her prints. My next artist was Pauline Townsend; this was the artist of whom I was going to base my silk painting design around. I wanted to use this artist because she was completely different to my previous artists and specialised with flowers and plants. These were different than my previous artists who mainly focused on buildings and skylines. I felt this could give me a variety in my project and allow the audience to compare the different styles and to see which type they prefer. My final artist study was Stephen Wiltshire. This was the artist who I was going to use to base my final piece design around and to get ideas from. I wanted to use these artists as I was a fan of his style and drawing techniques which I wanted to apply to my work.
The theme of this project was environment. In art there are two main types of environment and these are urban and rural environment. These two types can give off completely different impressions and are completely different when coming from an artistic side. Rural art is usually used to show character and natural landscapes. This is different to urban which is mainly used to draw buildings and skylines. These two can be combined though to create excellent pieces of work. I prefer urban drawings and environment as I admire the buildings and skylines which are drawn. I am also a fan of the modern part of it. Another reason why I prefer this type of art is because it links more to me as I have lived in a city my whole life and have rarely gone to rural environment. This means this type of art is more familiar to me and stands out to me that little bit more.
Artist Studies
During the project I carried out four artist studies and created responses to each of them. I also created pieces of work using different processes which were not to do with any of the artists. The first artist I researched was Katsushika Hokusai. He was the artist I did my lino print in the style off. My lino design was linked to him as it had similar features to his pieces of work such as the nature side with the tree in my lino. I also felt the layout was in a similar style. I have written about how I created my lino print as well as all of the other processes in my book. The next artist I researched was Clare Halifax and she was the one I was going to respond to using screen printing. I really liked her style in the way she blends rural and urban environments but I felt her images wasn’t personal enough. This is why I decided to use a picture of a person, the reason why I chose this person is because she is very hardworking and influential. I feel she is a perfect role model and somebody I would be pleased to create a screen print about. I feel this piece links to environment because the combination of people and buildings from this piece and other pieces shows how environment can be affected by us and how we can affect it. My third artist study was of a person that goes by the name of Pauline Townsend. She specializes in silk paintings and I felt this was the perfect artist to do a silk painting response to. The reasons for this was because she is mainly known for silk paintings as well as being known for drawing naturals images such as flowers. I decided to create an image of flowers which were in a similar style to her and similar to one of her pieces. I decided to do this because I wanted something completely different than my previous pieces of work and something that gave me a variety and allow me and the audience to get a contrast. I felt this worked very well. My final artist study was of a man named Stephen Wiltshire. I used him to get ideas for my final piece. He is known for drawing iconic landmarks such as the houses of parliament. He is also known for drawing iconic skylines. I wanted to implement some of these ideas into my final piece. This is the reason why there are multiple iconic landmarks that create a skyline. I felt this combines his two best elements into one piece. I also wanted to add plants into my final piece to show the difference in rural and urban landscape and give the picture a cutting edge and make it slightly abstract and unusual.
The strengths in my lino print was that I felt I got a good range of colours, tones and materials within it. I felt since I printed it onto a number of different materials that it able to give the audience a contrast and comparison. I also felt that the colours gave a good contrast as one seems to be in bright colours and give the feeling of warmth and day where as another one was in darker colours and gave of the feeling of cold and night. The improvements I would make to this piece are that I would try to carve out more so that the picture could come out a bit clearer. I would also try a less dense design as with this design it is hard to make out what each part is since there is so much going on in the piece.
The strengths for my screen print are that since I used a number of materials to print on that it gave a good comparison and contrast with the piece. I also felt that it was quite a clear image that you could see the movement she was carrying out and the emotion on her face. The improvements I would make to this piece are to try more colours and not just use black. I would do this to see which colour gives of the best impression and effect. Another improvement I would make is that I would add a background such as a building of plants to link it a bit more to environment.
The strengths of the piece of paper I made was that I managed to get a solid piece which was quite large, which allows the audience to look at it a bit more and see all the details and materials I added to make it. I also felt that the piece was sturdy and well-made which made the process a success. The improvements I would make to it is to maybe try making a range of them in different colours to see which one I prefer and to also draw on them to see how they compare to ordinary paper.
The strengths of my felt making was that I managed to make a large piece of felt which had a variety of colours and appealed to the audience. I also felt it was sturdy and well made. I felt the colours linked well with the environment as well as it had green for plants. Brown for wood and yellow for sun. The improvements I would make to this piece are to use different colours to give a contrast and to see which one I prefer. I would also try making it with a pattern on to make it a bit more interesting to the viewer.
The strengths to my silk painting are that I managed to create an image in the style I was going for and managed to transfer it onto the silk extremely well. I felt this had a wide range of colours and could catch the eye of the audience, easier than if I used blander colours. The improvements I would make to this is to use a lighter colour felt so that you could see the colours even clearer. I would also make it that the lines were thicker to make sure the ink did not leak as it has done.
The strengths to my piece of weave is that I have managed to use a number of different materials which can allow us to see which one works best for this type of process. I also thought that the size of the piece was god. That it wasn’t too small that I was hard to see and get an idea of the different materials. But not too big that it got boring and overwhelming to the viewer.
The strengths of my final piece are that I felt I managed to get a good composition with the piece and that I managed to get a good amount of detail within it. This makes the piece more appealing to the audience. I also felt I managed to blend the rural parts of the piece with the urban parts of the piece extremely well and that they went very well together. The final strength of my final piece is that I felt I managed to shade the piece very well and that it gives of the message I wanted. I thought it was in a similar style to the artist of which I based it off of. The only improvement I would’ve made is to add a small amount of colour into it as I feel this could’ve made it even more eye catching.
The lino print process links to my final piece as I feel I have taken ideas such as the layered affect and building ideas into my final piece. I felt some of the things I have used in this piece I have thought about in my final piece and have implemented it very well. I feel my silk painting links to my final piece as I have used the ideas of plants and flowers and have used them in my final piece to give of a contrast and allow me to give off more than one message. I feel that my other processes do not link too much to my final piece by design wise but I feel as though I have taken ideas through the methods such as to not over complicate the piece, which I took from screen printing. Too not mind using pattern which I learned with weaving as I used a number of materials with different patterns on it. I feel the artists have influenced my work as I have implemented ideas from each of them into it. For Katsushika Hokusai and Pauline Townsend I have taken ideas with plants and nature and implemented them into my final piece and for Clare Halifax and Stephen Wiltshire I have used the ideas of buildings and skylines and implemented them into my final piece.  The way I could’ve improved my artist studies is to add more of my opinion on their work. Such as saying why I liked certain pieces and how I was going to use it. The strengths I felt I had with my artist studies were that I felt I managed to get quite a lot of information about them and learn quite a lot about their styles of art. I also felt I managed to learn about why they use their techniques and why they have become successful.
Techniques and processes
When I was carrying out all the processes, I had some complications but I felt I carried them all out quite well. For my lino print I had problems because I originally drew out my design onto black lino, this caused me problems as I had difficulties seeing it and so made some errors and cut the wrong parts. This thereby made me restart with grey Lino this was much easier to see but was much firmer so it made it harder to carve, thereby taking me longer. This process took quite a bit of time but I was pleased with the final result and felt the effort was worth it.
My next process which was my screen print was a bit easier to do but still quite complicated. With this process I struggled to find a good image to do it with. This took some time to find but eventually I found one. Then the design was quite hard to cut out and this was a very technical process which you had to be patient with. This thereby caused this process to take quite a bit of time but once I had cut it out and then printed it I felt the final result was extremely satisfying. The printing part of this process wasn’t too complicated and I didn’t really have any problems with doing it.
My next process was felt making. This process was one I quite enjoyed because I didn’t find it too difficult. I was confident with doing it and felt I completed it quite well. The only problem I felt there was with this process is that it took a lot of time to do for the outcome you get. I felt the outcome wasn’t completely worth the effort and time it took to create. This was because it took a long time to do and the final piece was very small and not the most appealing thing to look at. The rolling part of this process was the bit that took quite a bit of time and effort to do.
I then carried out the paper making process. This process was quite difficult and was very messy. I felt I managed to mix the materials well and place it in the frame well. It was very complicated and messy to do so because I didn’t want to spill anything and keep mess to a minimum. Then after I got my shape and had to remove it from the frame and put it on a mat to dry. This was complicated because you had to make sure that you did it evenly and carefully to make sure it didn’t break. I completed this with a bit of help. I got someone to hold the frame as I carefully edged it out to make sure I didn’t damage it.
My next process was silk painting. I first drew out my design which I didn’t find too difficult but then I had some issues transferring it onto the silk. This was because the silk wasn’t solid and kept moving. It caused some problems but I took my time and eventually got the whole design transferred over. Once I had done this I then went over the lines which I didn’t have too many problems with. I just made sure to take my time and keep a steady and even pace to make the lines consistent. After this I filled the gaps in with ink. I started with some issues because I wasn’t putting enough ink into the gaps and it wasn’t spreading enough. Once I had worked out I needed to add more, this process was quite easy and didn’t take too much to complete. This was one of my finest processes to complete.
My final process was weaving. This process was quite easy to do and I didn’t have any major issues with it. I first cut my frame out which was quite easy. I then cut the gaps and put the thread through it. This was quite easy as well. I then got the materials and started to add this in. This was a little bit difficult as I had to make sure it was very tight. This took quite a bit of time but wasn’t too complicated. This was one of the easiest processes to do.
I would have to say that silk painting was my strongest process. The reason for this was that it was a process that I could carry out completely on my own and didn’t need any help to do. I also felt it was my strongest because I felt confident with it and had a very good idea of how to do everything. Another reason I feel this was my strongest is because I didn’t have too many problems with it and felt I carried everything out to a satisfactory standard. I also felt this was one of the more enjoyable processes to do.
During the course of all of these processes, I carried out somethings to make sure that I was safe and that I wouldn’t hurt or injure myself or anyone else for the matter. I am going to give you some examples for each process. For lino printing to make sure that I was safe I made sure that I used a handguard and carved away from myself. This was to make sure I didn’t cut or injure my hand. I also made sure I wasn’t near anyone else to make sure I didn’t hurt or injure them. For screen printing I made sure that I used a cut mat and that I cut away from myself and used a metal ruler. This was to make sure that I didn’t damage the table and cut myself. I also made sure the workspace around me was clear to make sure I couldn’t catch anything and damage anything. For felt making, when I mixed the soap and water,  I made sure I used a sensitive soap so that it didn’t irritate my skin. This was to make sure I didn’t come up in a rash and didn’t harm my hands. I also made sure I kept my face well clear of my work to make sure that no soap got onto my face or into my eyes. For paper making I made sure I was very careful with the blender and that I carefully placed the materials in the blender and placed the lid on the blender when it was on. I also made sure I emptied it carefully to make sure I didn’t cut or injure myself. Another thing I done in this process was to make sure I washed my hands once I had finished to make sure I didn’t wipe my eye and get anything in it such as glitter. For silk painting I made sure that I taped my silk down so that it wouldn’t move when I was drawing onto it. This was because if it did move then I may have caught someone and hurt them. Another thing I did with this process was to make sure that I kept the inks and materials away from my face to make sure I didn’t damage my eyes or irritate my skin. For my final process which was weaving,  when I was cutting the materials I made sure I took extra care and cut away from myself. This was too makes sure that I did not cut myself. Another thing I did was when I was cutting the thread at the end. I made sure to take my time and care to make sure I didn’t catch and cut my hands.
Development work
During the course of the project and my processes I wanted to have a variety throughout. This is why I wanted some rural pieces and some urban pieces so that my book wouldn’t become dull to the audience. For my lino print I wanted it to be mostly urban based but have a bit or rural in it. This is why the piece is mainly based around the buildings and mainly focused on the buildings. But I wanted to add a bit of a rural touch to it. That is why I decided to add the tree to it. I felt this gave it a good amount of contrast and made the piece more appealing. I was pleased how the piece finally came out. The thing I would change is to try and add more ink so that it would come out a bit clearer.
For my screen print I wanted to go for a different theme and that is why I went for a picture of a person. The reason for this is because the person who the picture is of has backgrounds in both rural and urban environments. I felt this would fit the topic well and why I decided to create a print with an image of her face. I was very pleased how this came out as I felt the amount of materials I printed it on gave me a variety to look at. The only thing I would change is to maybe print it in a number of different colour inks to see which one I prefer.
For my paper making I wanted to use materials which I use on a daily basis such as glitter and paper. These I felt linked to my daily life and my urban life to. I thought this piece came out well and had a multitude of materials within it to attract the audience’s attention. The thing I would change is to maybe make more than one and use a different colour so that I can have a collection of them.
For my felt making process I wanted to mainly focus on rural environment. This is why I decided to use green, brown and yellow. I thought these colours represented the rural environment very well. The green was to represent plants. The brown was used to represent wood and trees and the yellow to represent the sun. I was pleased how this came out.
For my silk painting I also wanted to mainly focus on rural environment. That’s I why I decided to have my design based around plants and flowers. I also wanted this piece to be quite similar to the artist’s work. I was very pleased how this came out. The only thing I would change is to maybe use bolder lines next time to reduce the chance of the ink leaking through as it did.
For my weaving I wanted it to be based around urban environment. That is why I decided to mainly use materials which you would find within an office or school. I was pleased how this piece came out as it was quite dark and dull and that is the effect I was going for. That is because urban environment are more like that then what rural environments are.
My two strongest pieces were my screen print and my silk painting. The reason for this is because I felt my screen print came out very well. I thought it was quite clear and appealing to the viewer and that since I printed it onto a number of materials, it gave the audience a variety of pieces to look at. This was probably my best piece I feel. The way I would improve it is to print the design in more colours to have a collection of them. I felt my silk painting was also very strong because I was extremely pleased with how this came out. I thought the design was very appealing to look at and that the colour I used were attractive. I also thought this piece gave out the right messages which was that rural environments are usually more bright and appealing than urban environments. The way I would improve this piece is to use thicker lines so that I reduced the chance of the ink leaking through.
My final piece has been influenced by a number of these pieces. In my final piece I wanted my urban theme to be similar to how it is in my lino design. That is why I based it around London landmarks which are iconic. I wanted for the rural theme to be similar to how it is in my silk painting. This is why in my final piece there is a number of plants and flowers which are commonly known and recognised within the UK. I thought these two themes were excellently expressed in my final piece and I was very pleased that I used these ideas. The final thing that I was influenced by is my screen print. The reason for this is that I wanted my final piece to be more personal which my screen print is. That is why I decided to use buildings and plants that I know well and have got use to growing up with. I was very pleased I carried this out because it makes the piece more attractive to me and the audience and has more sentimental value to me.
Final piece
I have developed my final piece in a number of way. My initial idea was that I wanted the piece to be in two halves. This was going to be that one side is completely urban and one side is completely rural. They would then meet in the middle with a large tree and Big Ben. I thereby printed images of plants and buildings and started to place these pictures onto a piece of paper to get an idea of how it would look. Once I done this I decided that I didn’t like how it was looking and how it was going. This was because it started to look very peculiar and basic. I thought it looked basic because of the two halves part. I thought that this effect was very immature and that I did not like it. I thereby decided to not use this idea and to go with another idea. My next idea was the one I actually used for my final piece. I wanted it to be mainly based around an urban environment because it is more familiar to me and that I feel buildings are more exciting to look at than plants. This is why I decided to base it around buildings. I also wanted to add some plants to make the picture have a contrast and be unusual. That is why I decided to have plants in the background and around the buildings. I was very pleased with this design and that is why I decided to use it. I felt my final piece was amazing and my best piece of work in the whole project. I felt that my previous piece of work helped me design the piece and develop it.
My chosen theme and idea was rural and urban environment. This is why I wanted it to be partly urban and partly rural. I wanted to use this theme and idea because I thought it would work well and have a contrast throughout it and make the image more abstract and appealing to look at. I mainly wanted it to be urban based because I grew up in an urban environment and this was more familiar and appealing to me. I wanted to have a bit of a rural environment because I feel plants are also appealing to look at and that the piece would meet everyone tastes. Whether they grew up in the countryside or the city.
Conclusion
In this project I have learned how to carry out a number of processes. These processes will help me in the future and help me create more exciting pieces of work. In this project I have also learned to be more independent by looking at a much larger amount of artists to see which ones appeal to me most and then using their work to create designs. I feel this has made me more confident in my work and with my artistic abilities. This has made me want to try more processes and techniques to make my work even more interesting. This project will affect my next project because it will make me want to try some of the processes I have learnt in this project in it. It has also made me want to try new ones and add them to my next project. This project will also affect my next project because it has made me want to carry out more drawing and has allowed me by making me more confident with my drawing abilities. This project has been one of my most successful ones.
