I was reading some obituaries of Brian Wilson and noticed that more than one talked about his most difficult mental health period as being synonymous with him "gaining weight" and placed the weight gain in the same category as the overall crisis. And it made me think about how celebrities "gaining weight" (often just becoming not-thin) is usually framed as a symptom of crisis, but their losing weight is not. Specificially I thought about how John Lennon's extreme weight loss in 1978-80 is not usually framed as a symptom of crisis or even as a troubling thing. In beatlesblr circles there's understanding that he had an ED and sympathy for that, but in wider circles - not so much. Obviously this policing is much worse for women but interestingly the male equivalent often flies under the radar. It makes me sad to think that if John got good treatment for his ED and stopped being alarmingly thin, media and authors could well have stigmatised that as a sign of crisis/failure/breakdown, as they had done in the 1960s, and as they did to Brian Wilson. It's hard to get healthy or even at ease with yourself when the world thinks your natural body is a symptom of crisis. It's why I can't really ogle late 70s John (even though his fashion style and flair means he often looks very attractive) because I can see so clearly the pain of an ED. Fame is a prison.
