Kathyrn has been back out there having adventures everyday. This time she was up in the alpine lakes of WA and on sections of the Pacific Crest Trail #pct, "Backpacking has been an important goal for me this year and one of the few things I can safely do during the pandemic. I backpacked in to an alpine lake and then did a couple of day hikes. One along a section of the PCT and another to a high peak above the lake. The 360 degree views at the top of the peak were amazing! Rain or shine I take every chance I have to get out on a trail." Bringing you another "everyday adventure" from our guide Janneke & her kiddos: "Adventure: the exciting exploration of unknown territory. Today’s adventure was to new-to-us Battle Ground Lake State Park in SW Washington with my 3 kids (10, 6, 3) and just ME. No other adults! Did I mention I was at a lake with 2 kids who can’t swim?? Sounds like a nightmare for some people, but I knew I needed to get outdoors for my mental health, I wasn’t willing to wait til the perfect time to go on my own or with another adult, and this sounded like a good enough last-minute option. And it was! We watched fish jump at dusk. We took a trip on the paddle board with a raft in tow around the whole lake, docking at every possible bank to check out the nature trail and any critters hiding there because my kids wanted to. We just slowed down and enjoyed the sun til it went down. Just me and my kids. It can be too easy for me to think that happiness or tranquility or adventure lies “out there somewhere.” But, when I remember where we live and notice these little humans with their sense of wonder and simplicit, it reminds me that “It’s not the destination; it’s the journey.” (Ralph Waldo Emerson) I challenge others to take a close-to-home adventure. Are you looking for an adventure for the whole family? Our ambassador Kathryn has a suggestion, "Deception Pass is a great place to enjoy with kids. There are plenty of shorter trails with big rewards. A short trip across a scenic bridge brings you to Bowman Bay and Rosario Beach, both wonderful spots for water play, paddle sports and tide pooling if you're there at low tide. We spent a week camping at Deception Pass kayaking, hiking, paddle boarding, exploring, and just relaxing at the beach." Our guides get asked all the time about their favorite trails and backpacking spots, here is what Diana recently shared, "I went to visit a good friend earlier this summer. We spent a day driving and hiking in Utah’s Big Canyon area. The hike to Willow Lake was a beautiful adventure through Aspen trees with incredible views of the surrounding mountains. If you live close to this area it is a definite must-do hike. Our guides and ambassadors have been out in the wild this summer, check out Cathy's latest adventure: "I spent a week in July hiking alone in central Alaska east of Fairbanks. At one point I was less than 100 miles from the Arctic Circle. The weather was a challenge and the landscape varied from forest to tundra. I saw moose, caribou and a lynx. Alaska is really beautiful and hiking alone gives me time to think, reflect, and pray. My personal opinion is that it’s important to challenge oneself and to face what we find challenging and intimidating. My first hike with A4W Diana told me “you can do hard things”.
