kida-oftheworld:
@adventurous-ellie
Ellie was out of the hospital and Kida had been taking care of her friend responsibilities very poorly in that they hadn’t spoken much since. She couldn’t really blame herself; the last couple months had been beyond crazy, but still. She felt bad about it–and she had been feeling so bad about it for so long, that she didn’t really really know how to bridge that gap.
Except that she did.
There was a bridge that existed, that had been mentioned before, that could mend the bonds perfectly. It existed on the perfect plane of existence, where it could not possibly do any harm. Somewhere in the back of Kida’s mind, there was a delicious, homemade-funnel-cake shaped bridge.
Ellie couldn’t possibly be mad at her if she made her a funnel cake, right? Kida hoped not. Cause that was all she had.
They had pinged messages back and forth all morning before Kida finally invited her over to her cozy third floor flat on the premise of coffee. Little did she know there were ingredients already laid out on the counter.
Someone knocked at the door, and Kida sprung from her chair at the kitchen counter and ran to it. She threw it open with a smile.
“Man–I’m so glad it’s you, that would’ve been weird if I had opened it all enthusiastic and it was just the mail carrier. Anyway! Hi! Welcome! Come in, come in!”
Ellie had finally gotten freedom from the hospital!
She had been stuck behind sterile clean white walls for..... well she couldn’t remember how long now. The days had all started to blur together seamlessly blending in one into the other. She knew she could always read her cards.
She had gotten a great sum of those, all dated with beautiful words of recovery written inside of them, but she didn’t want to dwell in the past.
She was out. She was okay. That was what she wanted to focus on.
Being home was something new to accustom herself around, since the hospital room had been her home for quite some time, but the redhead had made do. Thankfully, Stan had popped around more often then not to make sure that she was easing herself back in slowly and not impulsively, which tended to be the ginger’s style.
Ellie, however, had come across some block of luck today and felt rather well with energy, and so was on her way over to go see Kida, whom she had been texting. When the door was opened, the ginger immediately, wrapped her friend into a tight bear hug, a laugh bubbling from her lips.
“I would’ve had to ask what you’ve been doing with the mail carrier then to look that enthusiastic.” She teased, wiggling her brows as she pulled back some. “But, hi to you too!! It’s so nice to see you!!” As instructed, Ellie walked into the living space. “Oh wow, it smells great in here! What are you making?!”

ripit-rollit-punchit:
Ellie made him feel important, like he was really doing something when all he was doing was being himself. It was kind of like what his dad was always telling him. He only had to be himself and the right people will know how great that could be and float along the currents of life with you, weaving in and out of obstacles and havin’ a good time all in all. Ellie had made Swynlake real special for him.
He felt the air get a little stiff and Ellie paused at his question. That probably meant she was staying longer. He squeezed her hand gently as she told him the news, trying to not let the sadness of having Ellie stuck in this room for even longer cross his face. He smiled a bit, “At least the pneumonia is gone. That was the hardest part right? Now ya just gotta rest and have your body do the same thing to those blood cells. Divide and conquer more territory in that body of yours so you can get outta this place.” He tried to give her hope, not only for her but also for him. Scute and Donatello continued to wiggle around the bed, not showing that they comprehended any of this. Just two carefree turtles and two laid back but moderately concerned people in a room.
There was Stan, her amazing and wonderful and perfect Stan speaking positivity to her to hand her hope when Ellie herself hardly felt like she had any left. She never felt as sick, fatigue and exhausted as she had the past month or so while being in this hospital. It scared her. It left her worried, and this... this was what had made the redhead so hesitant about ever entering a relationship under the condition she was under.
That she could leave at any moment and hurt the one person she never wanted to hurt.
Ellie returned Stan’s squeeze with her own, although her’s was weaker from the lack of strength that had been sucked out of her body. She smiled now too, because even though everything looked like it was getting worse, and her hope was slowly draining from her, Stan knew what to say to make every moment that much better.
“It was the hardest part and it does feel a lot better not having it around anymore.”
But her numbers were still low, and with low blood count numbers that meant she could easily get just as badly sick all over again, but this time she got sick well.... she didn’t have the numbers to fight it back and if she couldn’t fight it back.... Ellie brushed that thought away, her head falling over Stan’s shoulder.
“Thank you. Thank you for always being right here for me, for always knowing what to say exactly when I need it the most. You’re the best thing that has happened me to here.”

kida-oftheworld:
Kida handed the mirror off to Ellie so that she could admire herself at will–this wasn’t motived by the fact that Kida thought the other girl was particularly vain, but rather because the smile on her face said enough. She would’ve loved the festival.
Maybe next time.
She leaned back in her seat, smiling, both to herself and Ellie.
“I’m really glad you like it. Though, really, it was all luck, I had a great canvas.” She teased. “But seriously, I’m glad you like it.”
She wondered if–was it bad to ask when she’d be getting out? What if there was no next time? Course, she couldn’t think like that. It just wasn’t healthy. There was always chance for a next time, as far as Kida was concerned.
“When you get out you should come help me plant some flowers in my–well, it’s not really a garden, it’s more of a collection of pots on my balcony. But there’s plenty of room.”
Ellie was very glad that Kida had allowed her to hold the mirror because she caught herself enjoying looking at the person who was reflected back to her. That girl looked bright, she looked so alive against the vivid hues of yellows and greens. It was uplifting, gave the redhead a boast of energy against everything that was weighing down on her.
“I love it!!!!! I’ve never had such grade A quality face painting like this done before!!!! Most of my other experiences were pretty, but this is beautiful!!!”
She placed the mirror down to look at Kida a small laugh falling from her lips.
“Of course I was a great canvas, I’m practically as white as one right one.” She teased although the description was terribly far off. Ellie was rather pale, more so than what she was use to because as much as she hated admitting, she tended to be pale on a day to day basis.
The ginger scooted herself forward a bit so she was close enough to give Kida a hug.
“Oh I’d love too!!! I umm... I don’t know yet when I’ll be released, but I can text you whenever I find out! Maybe, hopefully sometime soon...” She wasn’t so sure of that, but she didn’t want to submerse herself in that at this moment. Instead, she added a little squeeze to her hug.
“Thank you so much for coming! I... I needed this more than I realized. I made my day!!! Thank you! Thank you!”

kida-oftheworld:
Kida chuckled, and set her paint brush back down into her kit. She turned back to Ellie and immediately the difference was striking. The petals she had painstakingly painted like up her face and brought some colour back into her complexion–which, though artificial, matched perfectly the bubbly energy she gave off as she babbled about her dad.
It was moments like these that Kida thought the world so terribly cruel. A girl like Ellie wasn’t meant to be in a place like this. But Kida knew, as much as she denied it, her teachings said that it had to be for some kind of reason. Some higher power. The gods were not always fair, but they were never unjustified. Her mother had been taken from her at such a young age, but it was to save her home, if Ellie was here then there was some greater reason for it. There had to be. Kida refused to think of it any other way. If there was any crack, any sliver of doubt in her beliefs, she would certainly falter, and the world would only be so much more grim.
“I can’t blame her–I’ve met a lot of professors in my travels, and they’ve always got something about them.” Kida said in jest.
She leaned over the side of her chair and plucked her phone out of the corner pocket. The front-facing camera reflected her image back at herself and she prepared it, bringing it up so that Ellie could see herself the moment she turned the screen around.
“Ready?” She waited just a moment–not even half a millisecond–for Ellie to nod yes, and as soon as she did she flipped the phone. “What do you think?”
Hearing Kida mention “travels” brought a light of excitement to Ellie’s eyes. It was something she wished she could say, just casually mention of places all over the world she has been too. It was her dream. See new places, meet new people, immerse into all the different cultures the world had to offer then journal about it all.
Maybe even one day get publicized!
But she felt such a dream only slip further and further away. At the level her cancer was at in this point in time, she knew she wouldn’t be able to travel as much as she would like. If anything, Swynlake might just become a permanent base for the amount of time she had left in her. Thankfully this town wasn’t such a horrible place. It had so much to offer and she had met some of the most incredible people while living here. Ellie just.... never thought this would be her final destination.
It wasn’t what she wanted to think about now as she nodded her head excitingly to see the art work done on her features. Once the mirror was brought up and she could see herself in it’s reflection, the redhead perked up with joy. It was beautiful.
“Oh, a sunflower!! Those are my absolute favorite flowers too! Kida, it looks so pretty and perfect!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!”

ripit-rollit-punchit:
Ellie was a girl that just had his heart beating in his chest. No matter what the situation she always thought he was like the greatest ever and he always thought she could do anything, including beat out all this sickness if she put her mind to it. He read mental health was definitely the harder and bigger hump in overcoming sickness.
Stan beamed from the second kiss and sat himself alongside her bed (he couldn’t exactly get into it with her because his legs were so long compared to hers and he didn’t want to move her too much). He watched their little turtle scamper its little feet along her lap. “Glad you’ve really put your foot down on that Ells.” He winked at her and held Scute in his own lap, petting his head with a finger. “Ya tell me that plenty, Ellie.” He felt like he was gonna blush coral looking red right on the spot.
He looked around the hospital room that had all his flowers and the cards people sent and little knick knacks from home and he realized how long she’d really been here. “Any news, Ells?” He looked over at her curiously. He always asked and always hoped it was better than before, but hey, what is meant to be is meant to be and things would work out in time.
“Good! Because you should know that like everyday.”
Ellie smiled brightly at Stan, or well as bright as a pretty sickly girl could, and as he got himself on the bed she found his hand and laced her fingers within his. She gently placed her head on his shoulder and watched fondly as Donatello kept on crawling right on over her laps.
Her eyes had also scanned over all of the flowers, the endless arrays of cards from friends she had made in her time here in Swynlake. It was a lot and it truly showed how long she has been stuck in a hospital bed. As Stan asked his question she took a pause of silence. Her thumb began to softly caress Stan’s palm because yes, she has heard of news, but it wasn’t exactly the best of news.
The news had made her think of her parents and how maybe it was time to call them to come over and see her.
That was a daunting thought because Ellie had promised herself the day she made that phone call would mean that she didn’t have much time left. It would be just enough for her parents to spend some time with their daughter before it all ended. “The pneumonia is gone. They were finally able to get rid of it all, but.... my immune system fought so much to get rid of it that now my blood count numbers are dropping. It isn’t..... panic point just yet, but the doctors don’t like the trend it’s taking. It’s why they want me to still stay. My immune system is too weak for me to leave just yet.”

kida-oftheworld:
Kida hadn’t meant what she had said with any underlying malice. She wasn’t bitter that she couldn’t see the world with her dad, let alone her mom. That ship had sailed. She was just happy for what she had, and glad all the same for the opportunities that Ellie had had earlier on in her life.
“Well, my mother was kind.” Kida started. “I only ever knew her as kind of a homebody–course the same goes for my father. I came around long after their adventuring days were over, so the mother I knew was always…” Her brow pulled in at that center, perhaps because she was oddly angled to paint leaves on Ellie’s forehead, perhaps because her memories of her mother were so far away.
“Stately, I guess. The picture of grace. My dad’s kind of always been the same. You know–” She pulled back, resting her hands in her lap. “You know the image you get in your head when someone says wise old man? That’s my dad, except with more facial tattoos.”
Ellie couldn’t help but to laugh a little when she heard Kida describe her father. It had started to paint the very stereotypical picture in the ginger’s head. Lengths of long white hair, old perhaps with some wrinkled lines on his features and these tattoos of blue inked on his face. Ellie remembered when she had once done research on Atlantis and had learned about their tattoos and the significance of such in their culture.
She wondered why Kida didn’t have any. Maybe perhaps because she was up on land now and you know that was not a common conception for most parts anywhere.
“Well, you know that stereotypical picture you get in your head when someone mentions a nerd? That sorta dorky look with frazzled hair and squared shaped glasses, yeah that’s my dad. He has all of that.” Ellie found herself laughing once more and would’ve shook her head, but avoided in doing so simply for Kida’s painting sake.
“He’s a huge History buff. It’s all I grew up hearing. He could talk anyone’s ear off if you let him, probably why he ended up becoming a History professor that way people were forced to listen you know? And yet, he still can’t tie his own tie. Mom fell for that dorky charm.”

“Nah, Ells. There’s nothin’ horrible about ya. Ya can’t help it and well, I just figured you’d want ta see ‘em. Guess I figured right.” He grinned at how happy all of this had made her. They always said your attitude was make or break in long hospital stays so hopefully this would keep her going strong and bring her back to him and the outside world soon.
“Hard to forget someone like ya, Ells. I think he missed ya.” He reached over to scoop up the turtle, now not super tiny anymore, but still kinda little in his big hand and gently placed him on her lap. “I’m sure they’re bored of me. They see me every day so this is a rad new adventure to see mom and look at places I’m not supposed to take ‘em.” He kept the bag close just in case he had to scoop them back in quickly. Nurses probably didn’t want turtles crawling all over their patients.
These were one of the many, many, many reasons Ellie was so head over heels for her boyfriend. Stan never looked at her with pity in his eyes. He never treated her like some fragile doll who could no longer handle the world around her. He had always been the same with her just as he has been from that very first day that she met him. She didn’t know how she had gotten so lucky.
Ellie carefully shifted herself a little closer so that she could place a soft kiss on Stan’s cheek. “You always figure right, and you’re the absolute best for that!!” She gave him another kiss on his cheek for good measure before Donatello was placed on her lap. She laughed a little then too, feeling his claws crawling over the cloth of her hospital gown.
“I forgot how ticklish his claws makes me!” But gosh was she so happy to see him!!!! “Awe they can’t be bored of you. I never am! And if I never am then they can’t be either! It’s the rule.” She smiled at Stan, gently placing a finger over Donatello’s shell and petting it. “I really have missed them, so, so, so, so much! Have I told you lately how wonderfully amazing you are, Stanley Schell? Because you really are!”
