One of the risks of being quiet is that other people can fill your silence with their own interpretation: You’re bored. You’re depressed. You’re shy. You’re stuck up. You’re judgmental. When others can’t read us, they write their own story—not always one we choose or that’s true to who we are.

When something bothered me, I didn’t talk with anyone about it. I thought it over all by myself, came to a conclusion, and took action alone. Not that I really felt lonely. I thought that’s just the way things are. Human beings, in the final analysis, have to survive on their own.

A Journal by Aditya Wibowo London, April 2017 // Ah, Sherlock, the OG of private investigators. To be honest, i've never seen any of it movie or maybe it's tv series, but i've heard a lot of interesting things about him though. We went near Regent's Park, which known for the area of Sherlock. // As an "investigator" you need to really care about your surroundings. That's basically the first task given to us. We were split into 3 groups and as a group we need to observe what's around the park. To be honest though, it was pretty difficult. Because you don't really know what to pay our attention at. From the first glance, you look at something and thought that it might be a clue, then you start to questioning wether it's worth your attention or not. We stroll along the park and try to collect as many "signs" as possible. We were told to gather at the center of the park after we finish, that's where basically we are going to be asked questions about the clues spread around the park. Luckily, i got the best team!! Haha. In the first task, my team leads. The instructor said, by the end of the session, the highest point team will get a prize, ambitious mode on. // The second task was easier i guess, because we only need to find the answer based on clues given, and my team leads again. The third one was frisbee!! It was really fun, we were in the middle of a grass field where the air was so fresh and it was pretty much a retreat. We laugh, we had fun together. Last part is the best part, where one of the tasks was to pose as if we were a real detective. // We gathered in the same spot again as we were in the beginning to announce the best group and the best "detective". My team won! And what's more surprising, the instructor picked me as the best sherlock. It felt like i just won lottery (never had lottery though haha). They awarded me with some sherlock stuffs, like his hat, his magnifier, and his cigar(?). Although it wasn't the real stuff. I'm pretty proud of myself. The instructor even told me that i look like sherlock in my glasses. I'm just there like, sherlock who? Haha. // What i learned from this fun yet challenging course is that, you need to believe your instinct and also be more open to the surroundings around you.

A Journal by Aditya Wibowo London, April 2017 // Have you guys heard about The Guardian? No, not the pharmacy, but the Newspaper company. Apparently, The Guardian is the biggest paper company in the UK! It has 3 main offices, one in London which we visited today, the second one is in New York, and the third one is in Sydney, Australia. The main idea of putting the offices in those 3 areas is basically so there will be new stories in a day from every part of the world. Today, we had the chance to be the editor for the newspaper! // We were gathered in a room full of computers where we need to work in pair to make our own newspaper front page. We get the chance to feel what it feels like to work in a newspaper industry. We were given least amount of time to finish the most of tasks. It was pretty difficult but we managed to do it! // The first thing we did was to pick 5 stories for our front page, after that you do some edits for it, add picture, headlines, and other things! // I managed to impress the head editor with one of my title though! I did the article of Prince William who's going to hand out the number in London Marathon 2017. I gave the article title of "Prince Harry, more like Prince Hurry." The head editor praised me for my sense of humor in my title and she said that i'm going to be a good editor in magazine. // After that we had a tour around the office, the office was really huge, there was a lot of people working in there. We ended the tour with a presentation of work in the media world. It was pretty inspiring. // I enjoyed the whole experience, but i don't think i see myself working in the paper industry. But i sure will apply what i learned today, and improve the skill i currently have on writing.

A Journal by Aditya Wibowo London, April 20th 2017 // Chin up, elbow off the table, let the afternoon tea party begins. You wouldn't really be calling it as "afternoon tea" though, because we did it around 10 in the morning. We went to this very fancy hotel called Milestone Hotel, it was located in a very decent location. It gave me the feelings of Breakfast at Tiffany's. I've been waiting for this "table-manner" training for a long time, not because i'm a messy person on the table, it's because i just feel like people need to know more about the manner while enjoying their meal everyday. // Our instructor was Ms. Emma Dupond, she was a very classy lady! Look at the way she walks! She was looks like a very formal and also intellectual British lady. She started off the lesson with a pretty brief history on where "afternoon tea" originated. I was surprised when knowing that "afternoon tea" was a thing people do it in private back in the days. // Before we jumped into all of the tea and cookies, we needed to know how to talk and introduce yourself properly in Britain. The simple thing like the handshake and conversation amazed me. It was very simple yet sounds classy. Not only the greetings, we also learned what to talk about in a small talk, and what not to talk about for the first time. We also learned about social kisses which i rarely see it in Indonesia. Social kiss is similar to a kiss on the cheeks, but the difference is that there's no skin contact. // Time for the tea! Although we are 5 hours earlier than the usual afternoon tea, but it's okay. On table, there are two cake trays that each has 3 layers. The first layer is filled with sandwich while we drink tea. Once you've finished with the first layer, you can slowly move up to the next layer, but once you go forward, you can't go back. Second layer is scone, you need to break the scone in half and spread the cream and jam on top of it. Scone was very interesting! Because you have to eat it in half, not full size. The third layer is cake. It was a delight! // The lesson's finished and also our tea. Before we dismissed, the instructor commanded us to do a quick review of what we've done. I'm looking forward to apply what i've learned as soon as possible, most importantly while i'm back home in Indonesia, because i do think that Indonesians do need to learn some proper etiquette, just saying.

A Journal by Aditya Wibowo London, April 19th 2017 // The day has finally come, i can experience what it feels to be part of a forensic team. Yes, you heard me right, forensic, not a real one though, just another part of an experiential learning. It's called The CSI Experience. The CSI Experience is actually one of the main reasons why i joined this UnlockingYou Project at London. I've been very interested and eager to know more about being a real life CSI. Growing up, i watched a lot of criminal-ish vibe tv series. From Dexter, and my most favorite is obviously CSI (yes, i watched the whole 3 CSI franchises) I wouldn't mind watching CSI when they're examining a dead body's limbs while i'm eating my dinner. My family swore by me to stop watching the show while we eat. Well sorry, it's not my fault that the program airs the same time we eat dinner. // Today's activity took place at lift building. The building was sort of hidden, so we missed it at first. We went to the top floor at the Angel Room. Inside the room, there was already a crime scene set up for us to make it look more realistic. So basically, the activity divided us into 4 groups that will work at 4 different tasks each time. The first table was "fingerprint analysis" (where i sat down at first), the second one was "footprint analysis", the third one was "crime scene analysis" and the last one were "substance analysis" and also "blood spatter analysis". // The first task we do was the fingerprint analysis. The instructor, Ms. Michaela gave us instruction on what to do and how to do it. What we needed to do was to analyze the fingerprint from the bottle, and match it with the sample database available. But sadly, we didn't really get any clue because our fingerprints are basically messed up haha. // So every team has to change table each time the instructor told us to change. Our second table was to find evidence based on the footprint trace left behind in the crime scene. Based on the evidence and the footprint sample, we concluded that the footprint belongs to Kerrie. // We moved to the third table, which our task was to decide which evidence should be considered as primary and need to be collected first. It was kind of tricky because everything looks important to us. But the instructor gave us note, which is to take things that might contains DNA first. // Last table got us divided into 2 activities, which were recreating blood splatter and also identifying sample which might contain bloods. I did the Blood one, it was kind of easy because what you need to do was only dropping some substance in order, and if it contains blood the cotton bud will turn pink. // Based on the evidences, my group concluded that Kerri is the killer. It was really fun, since i've been looking for doing this forensic type of activity after watching the show CSI. I enjoyed the whole activity, but i don't think i will be doing it as a job in the future.

A Journal by Aditya Wibowo Cambridge, April 18th 2017 // After being surprised for my birthday with all of those mixed feelings (story in my last post) we took 2 hours bus ride to Cambridge for today's activity. Today we had an experiential learning of Punting. Punt is basically a flat-bottomed boat, similar to the one used in Venice, Italy, i guess? Back at home, way before going to London, i did a research on this Punting activity. Based on what the research i've done, it showed that we will only need to sit back and enjoy the ride while the punter drive us along the cam river while we do sightseeing. But turned out, it's not what we did today. Instead of hiring a punter, we drive it ourself! We are being divided to 5 groups consisting of 4 to 5 people in one boat. // I was very nervous on thinking about riding my own punt. Before we go, the instructor told us what to do with the punt, from how to paddle it, change direction, and what to do if the stick get stuck. After that, the instructor released our boat from the deck and we're free to go! At first, our boats basically collided into one another, because we're still figuring out what to do with the boat, and eventually managed to get out of the tangle. Driving the punt was very difficult, to be honest! The stick was heavy, the weather was cold and windy, also the boat was unstable! Some boats often turned around, changing the direction by itself. Turning the boat into the right direction was more difficult than driving it in normal stream though. We spent up to like 5 minutes just to turn the boat back in track! And it didn't only happened once, it happened a lot haha. // Somehow, our boat turned around and get carried by the stream to the swampy area of the river. Let me tell you, if you think turning the boat in normal stream is already difficult, this one is WAY MORE difficult, we managed to get out though thank god! But when we got out, other boat has been far away basically. My boat only made it to the second bridge, when we realized that the time was almost up so we have to turned back around. We made joke on how we got in last but get back first. We were leading the way, until the other group managed to passed us out, surprisingly, they were good. At the end, we arrived back in deck on second place. // In my opinion punting is like learning how to ride a bike as when you were a kid. It was hard at first, but it makes you eager to do it more and more. I'm really looking forward to punt again, but perhaps in a warmer and cozier weather?? Haha.

the aftermath of my birthday, // is being surprised // so basically, what happened this morning was we all being told to gather in the hotel's dining room for a "morning briefing". Long story short, i was being lectured of my fault (i lose my harry potter's tour ticket) it was pretty intense to be honest. Turns out it all was just a set up and boom, my friend, Dara came out with a birthday cake and shook me to my core. Most importantly, can we all just give a round of applause for my english teacher, Miss Arma for her acting which was convincing enough to make me think it wasn't a set up at all. Again, thankyou so much for all who have spent money and time for setting up the surprise birthday party. Cheers to all of us!

A Journal by Aditya Wibowo London, April 17th 2017 (Part 1 of ?) I'm going to start this journal with a wish from me to my own self. Happy birthday to you! Congratulations, you made it to the 17th chapter of your book! Now your pages are blank, ready to be filled with many great stories to come for people to know about. Raise your glass, and take a sip of this life and enjoy it. Today, in the cloudy, gloomy, freezing cold situation, we had to get out to explore London and capture the great moments we have for other people towards photography. Yes, i'm really looking forward for this workshop. Some people said, i'm such a photogenic person, and i see it now why (as seen on the pictures of myself that i attached above haha). My main goal after joining this workshop is that i would be able to express myself towards photography in a better way possible. Today's workshop is a collaboration with FotoRuta London. Their goal is to give creative photography experience for the people. Our coach today is Ms. Jaelle but you can also call her with J (as in the letter). She's a fun person, and i like her accent! It sounds like spanish/french to me, but who knows! Basically, in this workshop, we were given tasks to capture some moments inspired by the hashtags given by the FotoRuta London team. I picked 3 out of 8 hashtags as some inspirations. They were Concrete Jungle, Upside Down Icons, and also My London Postcard (the ideas are interpreted on the pictures attached above). We hunt for our prey (photography spot) along the Thames River. It was a tiring yet fun freelancing photography experience! Although it was freezing cold, but somehow we managed to get rid of the breeze with our eager to take decent pictures. We went across some amazing places, one of them would be Shakespeare's theatre, it said that it's closed during winter because it would be too cold inside. Our photography workshop's journey ends at the London bridge where we basically take more picture. Oh London, you're like an ice cream to me. Very cold, yet still making me want more and more.

A Journal by Aditya Wibowo London, April 16th 2017 It's Sunday, and i had to wake up very early, it's fine though, i don't really mind. I managed to get a decent, cozy sleep after my 14-hour-ish flight from Jakarta. We arrived around 7 last night, and in my surprise, it's still as bright as it is 4pm in Jakarta. I was greeted with a breeze, cold wind as i stepped out the plane. To be honest though, i'm not really the type of "cold weather" person. Back at home, i would really avoid going on vacation/casual trip to a cold place, but i guess, London is an exception. We took the tour bus back to the hotel. We are staying at Days Inn Hyde Park, it is located in the center location of London. The hotel room reminds me of my room back at my old house, not really spacious yet cozy. I'm quite having a love-hate relationship with my hotel room, but it's London! What could possibly go wrong? Today is basically my first day exploring London, and today also has a pretty tight schedule. I had my breakfast around 6.30 in the morning, because the group leader wanted us to get ready by 7.30 because we are going to catch bus to our TED-ed workshop. I would not really call it as a "breakfast" though, because i'm really the type of "rice for breakfast" person, because i could only eat some pastry for breakfast at the hotel. I got on the double-decker bus! How exciting! We stopped near the workshop venue and walk not to far to the venue. The venue was in Premier Inn's meeting room. Inside the meeting room there was already Mr. James Evans, our coach, waiting for our arrival. He's such a charismatic and easy going person, he managed to deliver the public speaking lesson easily. He made everything sounds easy for a pretty complicated lesson. After the 4 hours lesson, i learned a lot of things that i didn't really know before, from the myths of public speaking, to the "step of success" in public speaking.

April 1st 2017 A JOURNAL BABY STEP TO AN ADULT JOURNEY AHEAD Today, i had a pre-departure program for a journey i'm about to start in 2 weeks. Starting off the program as a seed, now i'm feeling like a sprout ready to grow. Apparently, writing is not as simple as i thought it was. Throughout the class, i just found out that there are such things as Creative Writing and Reflective Writing, and both are different. I also learned new things about photography, from the photographer himself, Ivan Loviano. He explained on what it takes to makes a picture more desirable for people to look at. Composition, Rule of the third, you name it. From what i learned today, i'm ready for the journey ahead. I'm a sprout ready to rise from the ground, and soon producing fruits for the people around me, even the world.
