A3 | Real Time Expression
The A3 for this subject will be a live performance based on the proposal from the A2. Moving on from the proposal, I will be using an existing artwork and will apply AR and execute this idea in A3.
To elaborate further on the existing artwork backstory, The Emotions of Hana, is a compilation of daily mood trackers from multiple people. From there I analyse and create an artwork that would display how mood changes throughout the day.
Technology Application
For this project the main software that was used to create this was mostly Procreate, FlippaClip, and Artivive. As for devices, phone camera and tablet were used in the making. To create the flowers into a digital format I have used procreate to trace each flower as accurate to the ones on the physical canvas.

The flowers are placed in an animation application, FlippaClip, where I would animate the flowers’ movement. From a simple animation method, each frame will be a slight rotation of the flowers until one rotation is complete and it rewinds the rotation. After completing this animation, it would turn into a video format for easier exporting.
For the final steps of applying AR into the artwork; I used the application, Artivive. This allows me to scan the physical Artwork and link it with the AR part of the artwork. After the application recognizes the artwork, I can add the elements that I want to incorporate. After editing is complete it was only a matter of pressing save and uploading this into the Artivive database. From there anytime people scan this artwork with Artitive, it will immediately recognise the artwork and overlay the digital artwork on top of it.

Concept
This artwork is my take how one’s mood can change trough out the day. From participants. The name itself can be consider a word play as ‘Hana’ can be portrayed as a person but it also means flower in Japanese which I see as a symbolism to all the participance of this data collection which are females and representing the look of flowers visual wise.
Each coloured Patels are representing a form of emotions thus having the arrays of colours. The four significant colours in the background are used to categorise the timeline of when the emotions take place.
Emotions never stay consistent or everlasting, I believe they should be in a form of a moving element rather than a solid on a canvas. Thus to make it come alive further, Augmented reality is use.
Finalising to be Showcase ready
To make it presentable and easy for the audience to interact with the artwork. I have created a simple website where a brief explanation about the artwork. By creating a QR linking the website and putting the QR near the artwork, it allows users to understand the art better.

Another QR was also put near the artwork where when the audience scan it, it will bring them to the Artivive application. The steps to interact with AR are made simple for users though those that might need further assistance; instructions are provided within the artwork website and even include visual assistance.
Live Performance Art
The live performance Art is an acrylic on canvas painting that can be located at any showcase room, though currently resided in MA studio. It is an AR interactive artwork with animated visuals. This Artwork was created with the intentions that audience can experience this in person. Below is a video to show what the audience may experience.

Week 9 | Real Time Expression
Body in space: the sensual experience of architecture and dance
Dance and architecture share a unique and profound relationship, both using space as their primary medium for creative expression. While dance involves the movement of the human body across space and time, architecture shapes and defines the spaces through which bodies move.
Thesis (M. Arch.)-Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1991.
Interplay of Dance and Architecture
In dance, the body moves dynamically through space, creating patterns, rhythms, and expressions. The dancer's movements carve out invisible pathways, engaging with the environment in a fluid, ever-changing manner. Time plays a crucial role, as each moment in a dance performance unfolds sequentially, with the dancer's body constantly interacting with the surrounding space.
Architecture, on the other hand, is a more static art form but no less interactive. Buildings and structures are designed with an understanding of how human bodies will experience and navigate them. As individuals move through architectural spaces, they encounter and respond to various spatial features, such as walls, doorways, windows, and open areas. These elements guide movement, create experiences, and influence emotions.
youtube
The human body serves as a common thread that connects dance and architecture. Both disciplines consider the body not just as an occupant of space but as an integral part of the spatial experience. In dance, the body is the tool of expression, while in architecture, it is the end user whose experiences and interactions with space are paramount.
When designing spaces, architects must anticipate how people will move through and interact with their environments. Similarly, choreographers consider how dancers will navigate the stage, utilizing every inch of space to convey their artistic vision. Both fields require a deep understanding of how space and the human body interact, creating a sensual and experiential journey.
youtube
Sensual Experience
The sensual experience of architecture and dance lies in the way both forms engage the senses. Dance captivates through visual movement, rhythm, and sometimes music, creating a multi-sensory performance. Architecture engages sight, touch, and even sound as people move through different spaces, experiencing various textures, light, and acoustics.
In essence, dance and architecture are intertwined through their use of space and the human body's movement within it. By recognizing and embracing this connection, both architects and dancers can create more profound and immersive experiences, enhancing the way we perceive and interact with the world around us.

A2 | Real Time Expression
Improvise the concept from A1 into a new conceptual approach
From assignment 1, I have mostly done research about large scale artworks; such as the Cedar Point Reeds where it utilises data and applies it onto a kinetic sculpture where it reacts with the movement of those nearby. This can be said to be a prominent example of new media art and the use of technology within an artwork. On the other hand, the second artwork I’ve researched focuses on the visual aspect; ATMA KIRANA uses led panels to display graphics of what the artist perceived of his country’s values. It interacts with digital and morals of people around them, reminiscing on the value that one culture shares yet portrayed in a form of new media.
I plan to create something reactive, although wanting to do something that can interact and react to human motion as inspired from Cedar Point Reeds; with time constraints and limited knowledge, I decided to do a medium both physical and virtual. With this I want to apply inspiration from ATMA KIRANA as well, where graphics are used. By combining graphics and audio interactivity, I believe it will give an interesting and plausible outcome.
Improvised & Simplified Using effective technology
As many appreciate physical artworks, I want to combine both physical and the virtual plane. With that I’m my I would like to reiterate a previous artwork, which is an acrylic on canvas, and apply AR to enable the audience to scan the artwork and see it comes alive into another form within their phones. Though with my limited knowledge, I will use a third-party application, Artivive, to make the processes of applying AR easier for both me and the audience.
To elaborate further, AR transforms the art world and generates immersive, interactive settings. Artists can use AR to add digital aspects to traditional works, such as soundscapes, animations, and interactive features that viewers can experience using smartphones. With the help of this technology, audiences may interact with virtual objects superimposed on sculptures or see paintings come to life, enabling more dynamic narrative and greater interaction. Additionally, AR increases the reach and effect of artistic expression by providing virtual displays that can be viewed from anywhere in the world.
Storyline Concept
I wanted and artwork that focus on human emotions and how no emotions stay constant thus constantly changing. With that in mind I have chosen an artwork that I will be reiterating, which is ‘Emotion of Hana’ , an acrylic on canvas. The concept of the artwork is to capture a series of emotion throughout the day; Each coloured Patels are representing a form of emotions thus explains the arrays of colours and how the four significant colours in the background are used to categorise the timeline of when the emotions take place.

Emotion of Hana by Aida M. 2023
The story behind ‘The Emotions of Hana’s’ name, from the title, this can be considering a word play as ‘Hana’ can be portrayed as a person, but it also means flower in Japanese which I see as a symbolism to all the participants of this data collection which are females and representing the look of flower visual wise.
New Media Technology
Procreate (software)
FlippaClip (software)
Artivive (software)
Phone
With this artwork, it enables interactivity with the audience, having AR implemented would be a good option as it is not too complicated for the audience to interact with due to the nature of AR being able to access from their phones and scanning the artwork only. With that say the AR part of the artwork would be animating the flowers, thus after scanning the artwork will come alive with movements through the phone. This gives the audience a new view than the traditional acrylic on canvas artworks. As most paintings on canvas are most likely static. AR allows me to break that and make the artwork animatic.

Week 7 & 8 | Real Time Expression
This two weeks’ topic delves into Sensorial Design and Synaesthesia. Sensorial design, unlike traditional design approaches that largely focus on visual aspects, considers all of our senses; sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell, to create richer, more immersive experiences.
Sensory design
The process of creating settings and things that appeal to numerous senses at the same time. This multisensory involvement can improve your whole experience, making it more memorable and enjoyable.
When wanting to implement sensory design, the goal is to go beyond what we see and consider what we hear, feel, smell, and even taste. This will allow one to build more meaningful experiences for people by engaging several senses. For example, an art installation may utilise special aromas to create a pleasant atmosphere and associate those smell to the visuals of the arts.

Synaesthesia
A unique neurological disorder in which activation of one sensory channel triggers reflexive, involuntary feelings in another sensory pathway. Synaesthesia can cause someone to hear colours, see sounds, or taste shapes. This fusion of senses provides a rare glimpse into how intricately intertwined our sensory experiences may be.
youtube
How do they work together?
Although synaesthesia is a rare illness, it offers important insights into sensory design. Understanding how different senses interact and complement one another allows designers to build more comprehensive and engaging experiences. For example, a synesthetic approach could inspire a music app that changes colours in reaction to different sounds, or a restaurant that mixes dishes with similar fragrances to improve the dining experience.
My understanding is that sensory design can learn and be inspire by the concept of synaesthesia and by understanding synaesthesia better. It can complete change the view of how one wants to execute sensory designing.

Week 6 | Real Time Expression
On week six, we discus on the topic of Theatre and Hybrid. As many may know theatre or live theatre is a collaborative kind of performing art in which live performers, typically actors or actresses, present the experience of a real or imagined event to a live audience in a specific location, most commonly a stage.
Due to the epidemic of Covid-19, most things had to be shut down and many had to work from home. This has led many to switch to a more digitally involved lifestyle. With that in mind, it is undoubted that theatre is critically affected by this. Though they overcome this situation by conducting streaming service of the live theatre thus, making it possible for people to still enjoy the performance from the comfort of their homes.
What brings hybrid into the picture?
As time goes by and the restriction of the epidemic dies down, live theatre performances are on the verge of re-opening. As a result, it might seem that it will soon be time to retire streaming productions.
Though why should they choose between one or the other? This is where hybrid come into play. Having able to continue to offer streaming services alongside live performances benefits theatres and their patrons. Although it is true that being there live and virtual can give completely different experience, this will allow for theatres to expanding their reach of audience and can be a great business opportunity for the theatres.
Benefits of doing things hybrid:
Appeal to a younger, digital native audience
Sell unlimited tickets, more than theatre capacity allows
Offer better value to families
Protect the safety of vulnerable patrons
Allow people to attend from anywhere in the world
Democratizing access to the arts

Week 5 | Real Time Expression
Last week we talked about multimedia performance, though for this week it will be Mediating Performance. Mediation is a systematic, interactive procedure in which a neutral third-party helps disputing parties resolve dispute through the use of skilled communication and negotiation strategies.
vimeo
Satu Hari: Penang
From my understanding, Mediating Performance is a performance done in a wider scale and with multiple parties. Thus, tend to happen in formal and official setting as performers would work with clients and companies demands in hope to create a performance and still achieve to fulfil clients demands.
As Mediating Performance is done in official setting, Sir Fauzi has given one of his previous works, Satu Hari: Penang, as an example; to showcase what goes behind the scenes when working with others before the final performances is executed.

Week 4 | Real Time Expression
Within this week 4, we cover about Multimedia Performance. Multimedia Performance may be viewed by person on stage, projected, transmitted, or played locally with a media player. Anything that can be access, put, or uses the media to create a form of live performance can be considered Multimedia Performance. This kind of presentation can be live broadcasted or recorded prior to the presentation day.
Why multimedia?
In contrast to traditional mass media which featured little to no interaction from users, such as printed material or audio recordings; multimedia allows users interact, communicate and explore different content. This is due to the nature of multimedia being a form of medium that combines different content forms such as text, audio, images, animations, or video into a single interactive presentation.
Live Cinema
One of the few types of multimedia performance is live cinema The concept of live cinema is still a fairly new and developing genre within media art that brings together experimental approaches to narrative and non-narrative film making, with live music and the performing arts.
vimeo
From this example given by Sir Fauzi, SuperEverything* is a cross disciplinary performing arts project created by leading audio-visual artists The Light Surgeons in collaboration with a group of Malaysian artists. This multimedia performance is a good example of how multiple different medium is used in real time to create live cinema experience.

A1-Part 2 | Real Time Expression
Malaysian Performance Artist

For the Local Performance Artist, I have chosen Abdul Shakir and his work. He is a local artist that has been growing in name and in the new media industry.
About the Artist:
Also known as Belalang (grasshopper), Abdul Shakir is a Malaysian multimedia artist artist and one of the co-founders of Filamen.
Started as a graphic designer, he now specializes in projection mapping, light installations, and interactive installations.
has collaborated with companies on projects ranging from interactive installations and motion graphics to graphic design and projection mapping in China, Hong Kong, Spain, the USA, and of course Malaysia.

ATMA KIRANA - National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur
ATMA KIRANA
As of his recent work, is the ATMA KIRANA, which is a digital art installation located in the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur. The art installation explores the essence of a 'Beautiful Soul' (the meaning behind Atma Kirana in the old Malay language) through the lens of the Rukun Negara or ‘National Principle’ as the main subject. This piece consists of five unique visual pieces of digital artworks that each depict a different aspect of the human experience and societal values, skilfully combining modern technology with traditional themes to produce an intriguing mixture of the past and present.
These visual artworks are, "Percaya" which invites viewers to contemplate faith and belief through the blossoming beauty of the Lotus flower, while "Setia" symbolises loyalty and dedication with the regal elegance of the Luffa flower motif. "Luhur" explores interconnectedness and transformation through the Bunga Keledek, while "Adil" embodies balance and justice with the Turmeric flower motif. Finally, "Baik" embodies grace and humility through the Orchid flower.

The piece invites viewers to reflect on their journey of self-discovery and shared human experiences. It blends digital technology with traditional motifs, breathing new life into upcycled LED panels from roadside billboards. The LED panels are used as a way to depict a songket design/style since the LED panels use pixels which resemble the stitches of a songket, fusing traditional artistry with modern technology. This allows the viewers to discover a mesmerising analogue pixelation effect, enhancing the interplay between local motifs and the digital landscape. Ultimately, "Atma Kirana" celebrates unity and cultural heritage, inviting viewers to contemplate the enduring importance of togetherness.

How does New Media Tech. enhance stage performance concepts?
The concept of stage performance is now not limited to only people; as technology and machines are able to take place in the spotlight, allowing it to give a performance and interact with the audience. Having new media in stage performance gives an opportunity to express more possibilities that could enhance the narrative the artist wants to convey to the audience.

Atma Kirana focuses on the visual’s aspect of the installation. The choice of subject and material have been chosen considerately to execute the artist ideology. At first glance, you’d think the artist is just using an array of screens to showcase the work, but the use of LED panels was carefully chosen for this specific artwork as it gives a traditional motif in the artist's vision. I’d like to think the arrangement of the LED panels was meticulously considered as it conveys the unity of a community. Thus, when the audience looks at the installation as a whole and the penal allows the digital art to come to life.

A1-Part 1 | Real Time Expression
International Performance Artist

For the international Performance Artist, I have chosen the BREAKFAST studio. Although it is not a singular artist, BREAKFAST studio was established by Andrew Zolty who is well renowned kinetic artist in Brooklyn.
About the Artist/Studio:
BREAKFAST is a studio that was established in 2009.
Zolty have spent the past two decades in exploring the complex intersection of technology, design, and the arts.
Breakfast was created to be dedicated in producing computer-controlled, kinetic artworks that would challenge the conventions of art.
There are more than 250 kinetic sculptures by BREAKFAST that are currently displayed in some of the world's most esteemed collections.
Cedar Point Reeds -Executed in 2021
Cedar Point Reeds
Out of the hundreds of Artwork that was created by BREAKFAST, I will be focusing on the Cedar Point Reeds. Many of their work have been inspired by nature and climate change. Thus, one of their notable artworks is the Cedar Point Reeds where their aim was to produce a piece of art that not only told a significant story but also captivated onlookers.
The Cedar Point Reeds sculpture was made to visualise the wind and wind energy production that occur at the 252-megawatt Cedar Point Wind Farm that is east of Denver, CO.; far from where the kinetic sculpture resides. To mimic the movement of real reeds, the sculpture updates itself every minute to reflect the current wind values by collecting the most recent wind data from the internet and by using a silent stepper motor, they are able to make the moving elements run smoother and without a noise. Without the machine being heard within the sculpture, it allows viewers to feel as though the sculpture is light and flowy even though it is made from heavy mechanisms. The sculpture not only moves but also illuminates a glow of LEDs to represent the power that the wind generates.
Aside from this artwork being a form of data visualisation, it also has a feature where people can interact with the sculpture. As a person comes closer or walks around it, the reeds will gather and illuminate at the area of the person and move alongside them. This is to represent how each individual partakes into the bigger story of achieving a better future for clean energy.

New Media: How It Can Innovative In The Future?
Using new media as a medium can become a powerful tool and bring a new level of creative expression into conveying emotions and narratives within their artwork. Having new media allows for the manipulation of variables to create dynamic and immersive experiences for the audience.
BREAKFAST have used kinetic sculpture with a twist of having audience engagement to create a narrative of their artwork. Although it is a kinetic sculpture, having that engagement of the audience and the details behind how the sculpture moves leans into the concept of media art in my opinion. Not only is it captivating, but it is engaging and a form of data visualisation which gives all the more meaning behind such sculpture.

Week 3 | Real Time Expression
On this week’s lecture, it was a short and simple lecture about 'scenes'. To better understand, Sir Fauzi decided to show one of his works as an example how and what is scene. In the video although there was no audio narration the video expresses itself through the clips (scenes), in conveying a certain aesthetic and emotions.
From My understanding of given example, Sir’s focus was to capture the emotions of the prayers. Although the event itself can be considered a very bright and colourful festivity; when Sir has a clear direction in capturing specific emotion and execute it with a black and white video. It completely changes the narrative of the environment. This narrative was able to achieve by setting a scene and atmosphere of the video and manipulate it into the perspective of what the creator, Sir Fauzi, what to convey.
All Image are from RTE week 3 slide
Main Subject
When in consideration to making a scene; one must understand their own goal on what they want to capture. If the focus is about food, then most of image and video must be associated with that topic and not stray away from the topic. Visuals is the first step into creating a scene or a story thus having the right visual is very important.
Image Aesthetics
Furthermore, to create a scene it is not only the raw image/video that should be taken into consideration but also the colour, or hue of said image can impact it. For example, if one uses high contrast and colour edits on their image, it may present itself as something more cheerful but when used a monochrome colour scheme, the vibe of the image may change to something more serious or earie; depending on how viewers may take it.
Visual effect
From the raw image/video to add more atmosphere, one can use slight visual effects. The use of this visual effects will help enhance the scene of the image and create a deeper storyline/mood for the viewer to interpret.
Audio experience
Another would be the choice of music and audio, it set the mood for the viewers and depending on the audio it can influence the type of emotion that the viewer may feel when watching the video. The choice of audio is important as it can be the finisher to making a scene come to life. Most people have a higher experience when visuals and audio experiences come to play thus making it just as important.
My take on this
I would say All above points are my take on this as this week’s class was a short one and an experience for the student to study the video and motive of it. Overall colours, visuals and audios need to have a balance and interplay with one another to enable a scene to come to life.

Week 2 | Real Time Expression
For this week topic of discussion, we have touch on the concept of perception. The understanding of perception seems to be among the many variables that influence an individual's understanding of mass media. Aside from that we delve into ways to have a beneficial workflow that allows us to execute our thought and idea more clearly.
Perceptions
Perception in itself is the process through which our brain interprets sensory data (taste, sight, sound, smell, and touch) unconsciously to fully comprehend our surroundings and potentially change our visual world.
The process of perception works in three different ways:
Organization
Identification
Interpretation

Image from RTE week 2 slide
The History
The philosophical study of visual perception dated back to prehistoric times when individuals strived to gain a greater understanding of the nature of experience. Later during the 19th century, psychophysics became useful for psychologists to practice with in this study. Through several psychological tests and other methods, this field of study benefited psychologists in gaining a deeper scientific understanding of how the human brain perceives information.
Constructive Workflow
As mentioned earlier by enabling yourself to organize your workflow and construct your way of thinking, this allows a chance to a better understand how the computer language works and how your idea are able to be digitally more generative. Though, how does one make an efficient construct workflow?
Understanding the Question.
Always ask the right question to get a better understanding of subject.
Construct a Strategic Plan.
Don’t go in blind. valuate the information’s given thoroughly, identify the pros and cons, create your content creation plan, understand what outcome you want from the information and build case studies.
Fill in the Blanks.
Organise and spit off your (into files/folders) work to have a better visual structure.
Get Ideas and Inspiration.
Searching for work and visual references have a higher chance to gain more inspiration and ideas.
Set a Perimeter
To remember ideas are limitless, to know your strengths, Time is a constraint, reference is just a benchmark, and solution is the idea.
My Take On This
From my understanding the art of perception doesn’t immediately come about. Rather, our brain goes through a process (organization, identification & interpretation), and how our sensory data our body takes in plays a role as well before we are able to perceive something. This has given me a wider view on how we perceive information and shows how environment and past experience can influence out perceptions of things.
As for having a constructive workflow, to conclude, one should be organised, planning and clear vision of idea to execute your work better.

Week 1 | Real Time Expression
Within this week lecture, we we’re introduced to what the subject will offer and a brief introduction of our lecturer, Sir Fauzi Yusoff. We also touched on the subject of “performing arts” for our first lesson. The word "performance art" is typically used to describe conceptual art that, as opposed to just being a performance for entertainment's sake such as theatre, singing, acting, etc. It is derived away from what people might know of mainstream performance and delivers a meaning based on the content.

In Marina Abramović’s 2010 retrospective at MoMA, The Artist is Present, she sat silently facing visitors for over 700 hours.
What is exactly performing art?
An artwork or art exhibition created by the artist or other participants that can be recorded or seen in real time, written or spontaneously produced, and it is typically shown to the public in an interdisciplinary fine art setting is considered performing art. This type of art which typically happen in museums and art galleries, can also occur in any kind of setting, including the street, at any time of day.
Performing arts usually involve:
Time
Space
Body
Presence of artist
Relationship between creator and the public
The subjects’ matter of these performing arts are frequently connected to the artist's personal experiences, the need for social critique or denunciation, and a spirit of transformation.
In general, it refers to a performance that is given to an audience but does not aim to portray a formal linear narrative or a traditional theatrical play, or it does not aim to portray a cast of fictional characters engaging in formal scripted interactions.
Therefore, rather than adhering to a prewritten script, it can incorporate unspoken word or action as a means of communication between the artist and the audience, or even disregard audience expectations.
My take on this
From young I've been intrigue with all types of arts and the different media that they can be presented in. It is nice to learn a more detailed explanation of performing arts as aside from common societal view of what performance art maybe, many may not know of this 'performing art' that focus on what the artist is trying to deliver and the meaning behind it rather then to intertrain the viewers.
It is another form of media that enables artist to show their ideas and creations. Having and abstract art take place live and innate with the environment.
