One of the themes in YGO that always strikes me the hardest is the death of innocence. Of starting out as a pure soul going through life expecting nothing but joy and exhilaration, only for the darkness of the human heart to come crashing down on you, dismantling that bright, beautiful world all at once. And somehow you have to carry on, not only saving the world but learning to live with the darkness that became intrinsic to who you are.

It's common for people to dismiss YGO protagonists as "idealistic Shonen Jump" archetypes, but after many things that happened in my own life and going through some paradigm shifts that are very similar to their internal struggles, I have come to realize that it takes great courage to carry that darkness and still go on to love and fight for the world and all the people who live in it - including yourself, somehow. It's simply intellectual and moral cowardice that compels one to believe that a hero is more "realistic" when they lose all faith in goodness and chooses the path of neglecting humanity after experiencing the death of their own innocence.

I love YGO heroes because they are a defiance to the idea that goodness is a zero-sum game, that only callous dismissal of our souls will bring about a just, prosperous world. That growing up means throwing away the inclination to cultivate joy and to hope for the future. Their innocence may be incinerated, but that part of their souls keep on shining through, and if people in the real world were more like that, maybe humanity, too, will have a little bit more hope for themselves.

The dub of yugioh gx is so funny like jaden, sweet fun loving nice guy façade jaden, has to fight tooth and nail for a smeckledorf of respect and kindness from the student body that inexplicably doesn't really like him at all

meanstwhile this oil slick of a man that regularly calls himself "the chazz" is well loved by just about everyone and regularly gets the entire student body to chant chazz it up
