Chapter 9 - Erik
“But why is her name Pearl?!” Erik exclaimed.
“Because all of them are named after gems. We've been through this.” she laughed, shaking her head at him. They were five episodes in and that was the thing he couldn’t let go of.
“But that's the thing a pearl isn't a gem! A pearl is a composite of Aragonite and conchiolin. Gems are solely minerals with no organic compounds.” he sighed, pushing a hand through his hair. The door rang, catching his attention. Most likely, the pizza they ordered not to long ago.
“You are putting too much thought into this.” She sat up and went to answer the door. He watched as she walked away, a small smile playing on his lips. He knew he was being ridiculous, but he needed to zero in on something other than the fact he was in nothing but boxers and a robe, alone with Anya. She had insisted on throwing his clothes in the dryer and now was regretting telling her okay. Well half way regretting. He couldn’t say he didn’t enjoy the pink that had found her cheeks when she saw him come back out barely dressed. His phone buzzed for about the tenth time and he decided to finally glance at it. They were mostly from Jess and the team wondering where he was. Another text sent at that moment.
Tatertot: Is Anya okay? Rumors are spreading like wildfire about her right now. And your coach is pissed.
Golden Boy:  She's fine. How did you know I was with her? Was it Landon?
Tatertot: Let's see if X = Rumor about Anya losing it + Erik getting the urge to skip (both of them missing)
Tatertot: X= Erik is with Anya.
Golden Boy: Must you be so annoying?
“Is everything alright?” Anya asked walking back in the room, pizza in hand. Erik shut the ringer of the phone off and placed it back in the pocket of the robe.
“Yeah. Just my teammates looking for me.” he lied. He didn't want to but he figured it be best if she didn't know there were rumors spreading about her.  He wanted to protect her from that. “Apparently, me skipping was a bigger deal than I realized.” he shrugged moving over so she'd fit easily next to him. She climbed up on the couch, sitting on top of crossed legs.
“People don't like change. It's a proven fact. Skipping a class is one thing but the entire day?  Your fan club is probably losing its mind.” she teased him.
“My fan club?” Erik asked opening the box up and taking out a slice and handing it to her.
“Oh please, don't act like you don't know. I've been there two days and I know.”
“Know what? I'm genuinely lost here Sterling.” he pushed, feigning obliviousness.
“Come on, you are way too smart to be this dense. I KNOW you know how much everyone loves you. Everyone thinks you're attractive, talented, smart, the whole package.” she spoke taking a bite of her own slice. Erik watched her and she scrunched her eyebrows together. “What?”
“So...everyone thinks that huh? Even you? ” he asked trying to hold back a grin. She rolled her eyes in response, but the flushing of her face gave her away. “Well I'm not all that golden you know.”
“Oh yeah? Name one thing.” she said pausing the show and turning to face him.
“I’ll show you mine, if you show me yours.” he offered.
“Deal. You first though.” she egged on.
“Okay. You want to know what I'm actually really bad at?” he said putting the pizza down. “Romance.”
“Way to tell the truth.” Anya rolled her eyes.
“I’m serious!” Erik played with the arm of the sofa, as he spoke, “Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had girls interested. Hell, even guys. I've taken a few out here and there for like dances, formals...prom was a must.”
“You were Prom King weren't you?” She interrupted, trying not to smile.
“NOT the point right now” he said rolling his eyes.
“That’s not a no.” She giggled making the teasing more endearing than annoying. He smiled.
“Really though. I just never met that person you know? And I didn't want to just lead anyone on. My life is busy. I never have any idea what I'm doing. People call me the Golden Boy. The All-American Dream. But it doesn't come without work. I barely have free time. I didn't want to ask someone to deal with that without really knowing that I liked them. Without knowing it be worth it.” he stopped talking, waiting for her reaction.
“There's nothing wrong with waiting until you find the right person.” Anya replied, taking his hand. “You put the care of others before yourself. You sacrifice yourself to live up to people's expectations. So you're not perfect? Doesn't make you any less Golden. In fact, it makes you a diamond.”
“Is this about to be a Steven Universe pun?”
“No! I'm being serious. Diamonds form after extreme amounts of pressure. And real, raw Dqiamonds have flaws. And yet we still think they are beautiful.” she explained. “See? I know a bit about geology too.”
“I never doubted it for a second.” he smiled back. “So, what about you? Is there a guy waiting for you back in New York?”
“Well, no. I had a boyfriend once but, we broke up pretty quick.  Most people steer cleared from me. ” she sighed softly. Now she was the one who was nervously playing with the couch.
“How come?” Erik asked, turning to give her his full attention.
“Well, when I was younger, weird things used to just happen to me all the time. I'd wake up at the docks every morning. My dad even used to lock my bedroom door but it didn't matter. And I couldn't ever tell them how I'd end up there because I'd be sleeping. And then things of coincidence always happened around me. Pipes bursting or windows shattering. Eventually, people just avoided me. Not that I could blame them. Then one day it all just. Stopped. I thought it was finally over. I could be normal. But then I moved here and it’s starting again.”
“And that's why you freaked about the dreams.” he said and she nodded solemnly. “You were worried we’d reject you too.”
“I’m sorry I don’t mean to be so this.” she began to tear up, and Erik’s heart crumbled in his chest. No wonder she reacted the way she did. Something like that could be traumatic for anyone.
“Hey, no tears.” He said, wiping one stray drop one from her cheek. “I know what it was like to feel alone, we all do. Even with my family, as close as we are, I always felt like I'm still catching up. Like I must work ten times harder just to fit their perfect family image. Xander's basically a single parent to his siblings. His parents work their asses off all day and night. And Jess well...she's an orphan. A victim of a failed system. We all have felt alone. We all have our demons. That's why we're so close. The worst things about our lives, they are what keep us together. Being a little different won't push us away Anya.” Erik stroked her face lightly with his thumb. “We’re your friends.”
“You've only known me two days Erik.” she said eyes closed, face leaning into his hand.
“Yeah, but it feels like longer doesn't it?”
Anya nodded and opened her eyes. Erik swore his heart skipped the moment their eyes locked. A thick air of tension now laid between what once was an innocent conversation. God, he wanted to kiss her. Correction. Every nerve in his body was fighting the urge to kiss her.
“Anya...” he spoke her name softly, one thumb rubbing across her cheek.
“Yes?” she answered, and his eyes flickered to her lips and then back to her eyes. Those damn aquamarine eyes stole every piece of reasoning and logic he had.
“Would it be okay, if I-.” He stopped talking when she nodded, moving closer to him. Their mouths connected and Sparks flew in every direction, and the world disappeared around them, along with all of their worries, thei troubles and their problems. She made him feel like none of that mattered. It was a small yet warm kiss. Erick honestly never knew a kiss so innocent could be so intimate and electrifying. Their lips were moving in perfect sync, his hands feeling her waist. He pulled her closer, the kiss deeper, more passionate.
He intended to just kiss her once, take things slow. But when she didn't move away, the kiss grew hungrier, desperate. She moved to straddle him fingers running down his spine, pulling him closer until there was no space left between them and she could feel the beating of his heart against her chest. Erik's fingers ran through her hair, causing it to cascade down around her shoulders.
God she was beautiful.
He wanted to slow down, but he couldn’t. No girl ever, would ever, take his breath away that she had. It was petrifying as it was mesmerizing.
The doorbell rang, snapping them out of their passion infused state. They separated their lips, foreheads pressed together as their chests rose and fell, lungs begging for oxygen. The bell rang again.
“I should get that.” she finally said, a smile on her face, lips red and swollen.
“Or we could ignore it?” he smiled back, pulling her back to him. Emboldened by the rush of hormones running though his system he began to kiss her neck and shoulders. She sighed, one hand running through his hair before gripping it and pulling his head away from her body. The bell rang again and Erik let out a frustrated groan. Anya giggled, placing one last kiss on his cheek before untangling herself and walking towards the door.
Erik laid his head back on the sofa, taking deep breaths as he regained his composure. Never had he ever been pulled so strongly to a person. He hoped she didn't think he was lying earlier. That he was just trying to make a move on her. Because that wasn't the case. Anya was different. He knew it the moment she saw her.
The creak of the door echoed and he heard Anya gasp. He quickly sat up to peer into the foyer.
“We decided to skip in solidarity...and bought apology donuts! Please say you don’t hate me?” Jess' voice echoed down. “I'm sorry we pushed all that on you. It was stupid...Can we come in?”
Anya looked over at Erik who shrugged in return. Your choice. He mouthed.
“Well...how can I say no to apology donuts?” Anya smiled. He watched as Jess jumped happily into Anya’s arms. “Okay, okay! Come in.” She took a step back and in walked Jess and Xander.
“We weren't interrupting anything were we?” Xander asked, one eyebrow raising at Erik who suddenly realized how this looked. He pulled the robe tighter around him.
“Not at all. My clothes are in the dryer. Pipe burst remember?” He explained, a nervous chuckle escaping his lips.
“I'm sure there was. “ Jessica smirked and Anya's face turned red.
“ANYA was introducing me to the world of Steven Universe.” Erik changed the subject.
“Help yourselves to the pizza.” Anya said, taking a seat next to Erik. He lifted his arm up and without missing a beat she snugged against him. It made his smile grow into a full-on grin.
“Oh no...they’ve imprinted.” Jess said falling to the ground dramatically. “I can see what's happening. And they don't have a clue. They'll fall in love and here's the bottom line. Our trio's down to two!”
She and Xander continued to quote the Lion King earning a hard pillow toss from Anya,
They all laughed, Anya catching them up on the show.
And just like that it was like that morning had never happened.

Chapter 8 – Anya
“Erik!” Anya shot up in bed, heart pounding in her chest. She groaned, running her hands across her face. She had the same nightmare all night and barely slept at all. And even though she knew what was going to happen, she had t same response. Luckily, she had a short list of classes today.
Anya made her way down the hall. She took a peek into her mother’s room, but it looked like she had already gone to work. Her legs still trembled a bit as she went back into her room and into the bathroom. She needed to calm down and decided to take a bubble bath instead of a shower that morning, but not even the embrace of the warm water could ease her nerves. She groaned reaching for her phone and lowering herself deeper into the tub. She wanted to text Landon and let him know she’d be skipping.
“Hello?” A voice called from downstairs, startling her. She quickly climbed out and tugged on her robe. She went to the top of the stairs, peeking slightly.
“Who’s there?” she yelled down. She didn’t know what she’d thought she do if she didn’t know them. Luckily, a familiar tussle of red hair and freckles appeared and she sighed. “Landon. You scared me. What are you doing in here?”
“ Sorry, the door was wide open and I got worried.”
“It was? My mom’s super spacey sometimes she probably just didn’t close it all the way.”
“Oh alright, well I’ll go wait outside.” He gave her a little salute. She nodded in response slinking back to her room. So much for skipping for the day.
A few minutes later, she made her way through the house and opened her door. Landon slouched against his truck, two coffees in hand.
“You’re punctual.” She spoke, walking up to him.
“Should have wanted you, on time is late in my book. Here, this for you.” He said handing her a small coffee. She took a sip, eyebrows raising.
“Thanks! Vanilla Caramel Latte with extra Vanilla? How did you know?” She answered him as he opened the car door for her.
“Lucky guess.” he shrugged before closing the door and walking to the driver’s side. His eyes scanned her again and he frowned. “So, long night?”  he frowned.
“Do I look that bad?” she asked, looking at her reflection in the window as he backed up.
“I don't think you could ever look bad Anya. Exhausted is more accurate.”
“Thanks Landon” she blushed. “I’ve had trouble sleeping as of late. Just the nervousness of school starting I guess.” “It’s giving me some weird dreams.”
“Want to talk about it?”.
Anya considered it for a moment, ultimately shaking her head. “No, it doesn’t make sense anyway. How was your night?”
“So eventful. I went home, did some homework, and then
. went to bed.”.
“You sure are wild aren’t you?” she laughed, lightly hitting his arm. He grinned in response.
They pulled into the parking lot of the school, slowly driving as they searched for a spot. Anya spotted Jess, Erik, and Xander deep in conversation out front of the school. “Oh, drop me here? I want to catch up with Jess.”
“Yeah, sure thing.” Landon said pulling beside the small blonde.
“Hey!” Anya called out the window, startling them out of whatever they seemed to to be talking about.
“Anya! Hey! Oh
Hey Landon.” she said with a smile. However, when she greeted Landon it seemed forced. Both boys just gave him a curt nod.
“Sup.” he said giving them all a small wave.
Anya opened the door and hopped out the truck. “I’ll see you later! Thanks again for the ride.” He gave another wave and drove off.
“So, you two sure are buddy. There something going on there?” Xander asked Anya. Erik shoved his arm. “What? What I say?”
“Between Landon and I? No. He gave me a ride home yesterday is all. Then offered to give me one today because he lives close by.” Anya explained. The three of them shared a look. “What?”
“He just rubs us the wrong way is all. It’s hard to explain.” Jess tried to downplay the situation. “One day, I barely know the kid's name. Now it’s like I see him everywhere.”
“Well it’s not his fault you just decided to notice someone you go to school with. I mean he’s been here the whole time.” Anya defended Landon.
“School is one thing. Outside of Erik’s house in the middle of the night is a complete other.” Xander countered. “Especially when he lives clear across town.”
“Well see that right there. Landon just told me he was home all night. It must have been another red-haired guy.”
“It was him Anya. We had a conversation and all. He said he was jogging by when he heard me scr-heard me.” Erik spoke.
“And since when is that a crime?” she shot back, clearly irritated.
“Look we have no power on who to tell you who you can or can’t be friends with just be careful. Please.” Erik said to her softly. Her defense crumbled.
“Fine. But I still think you’re all throwing this way out of proportion.” Anya sighed as they walked along. She looked at her friend’s faces, all of them laced with the same sleepy-eyed look she saw in the mirror that morning. “Rough morning?”
“Yeah actually. We all kept having these nightmares.” Jess yawned, stretching her arms over her body.
“Really? Same here. What was yours about?” Anya asked.
“Okay, don’t get weirded out though.” Jessica said softly, glancing at the boys. “So, first off all you guys were in it but we were all younger.  And we were all dressed in like these game of throne costumes and...” Jessica stopped as she realized Anya stopped walking, her face draining of color. “What is it?”
“You had a on a white dress and mine was blue.” Anya whispered, reciting the details to the dream. “We woke Erik up from a nap on the ground. We said we were practicing?”
“You all were getting worried because I had advanced in such a short time. I had these huge boulders obeying my every thought.” Xander spoke next. “Then Erik’s eyes starting glowing red.”
“You guys were so impressed with Xander. I made a
a fireball form in my hand. But I lost control and it started to engulf me. And then-“
“I woke up.” They all spoke at the same time. Anya’s heart was beating wildly in her chest. How could it be that they had all had the same exact dream? It didn’t make any sense.
“Then we were right. We did all have the same dream. I’m willing to bet at the same time too.” Xander nodded, face void of any hint of what he was feeling.
“I told you.” Jess said to Xander in a hushed tone.
“Told him? Told him what?” Anya said looking at her.
“I just thought it was odd we were all so fond of you so suddenly. Not that I'm complaining at all! Just..don't you feel it? That little tug inside of you? Drawing us all together” Jess asked her. Of course, Anya felt it. But wasn't that just the way it was when you made friends?
“Look I don't know why you guys had the same dream as me...but” Anya spoke, taking a few steps back from them. This was all starting to freak her out. “I've got to get to class.”
She turned on her heels, ignoring the calls of the others. The farther she got, the more upset she became. She could feel the tears welling up in her eyes, and she cursed herself. She just wanted a normal year. Just one. She thought she was done with all the weird things happening to her. She turned a corner and smacked right into someone.
“Watch it!” Kaitlyn's voice barked at her.
Great. The last thing she wanted was Kaitlyn's ridicule. However, that seemed not to be the case.
“Jesus Christ are you crying?” Kaitlyn asked, the edge in her tone not dulled in the slightest. “The day just started. Did someone drop their morning cheerios?”
“Just leave me alone Kaitlyn.” Anya’s voice quivered, trying to circumvent her.
“Hold on. Where do you think you're going?” Kaitlyn said grabbing Anya's arm. “You didn't even say sorry.”
“Let me go Kaitlyn.” Anya said frantically, heart beat racing as she tugged at her arm. Oh no. Not now. Her vision faded on the edges as she pulled at her arm. Her breathing grew frantic and shallow. Kaitlyn responded but she sounded far away, like an echo down a hall. “Let me go!” she screamed this time. Her voice screeched loudly, slicing through the air like a banshee. The walls began to creak and Kaitlyn let go of Anya's arm but it was too late. The windows shattered around them, reminding Anya of the nightmare that plagued her. The fountain in the hall busted from the wall, spewing water everywhere. Anya dropped to her knees, eyes closed, as she tried to fight the feeling of the walls closing in. She was completely consumed by the panic attack.
Muffled voices tried to break through the blood pumping in her ears as they argued with each other.
A Strong, warm hand gripped her shoulders, the gently coaxed her to look up. Familiar amber eyes met with hers.
“It's okay. It's okay, you're safe, Anya. You're safe.” Erik called out over the sound of the water. “I'm right here. As long as you need. Just focus on me. Block the rest of it out. Deep breaths. In through your nose. Out through your mouth on my count. One. Two. Three. In.” Anya took a deep breath in holding it as Erik counted down. “Now out. Again.”
The two repeated the cycle, as the floors flooded with water. He stayed there, drenched and by her side. Until finally, she felt like she could move again.
“Better?” Erik asked her and she nodded, tears still leaking from her eyes. He smiled and warmth spread through her. “Good. Can I take you home?”
Anya nodded, letting him help her up.
Landon rounded the corner, eyes bugging out at the sight of her.
“Anya? Are you okay? What happened?” Landon said coming up to them. His eyes flashed to his sister. “Kaitlyn! What did you do to her?”
“What? ME? That freak bumped into me! Then started going loony when the pipe burst. I didn’t do anything!” she tried to defend herself.
“You’re lying.” he replied, stone faced.
“Landon, it wasn't her fault.” Anya spoke softly, not wanting any more trouble.
“Anya, you don't have to defend her.” He said reaching out to her. Erik caught the boy’s hand. “Fine. Then at least let me take you home.”
“I'll take her home. You stay and deal with your sister.” Erik ordered more than suggested. He stood up a bit straighter and his arm around her tightened just slightly, protectively.
“I was talking to Anya.” Landon responded.
“Landon he’s right. Stay with Kaitlyn. I’ll be fine with Erik.” Anya answered.
“Alright. Call me later.” Landon sighed and moved out the way.
________________________________________________________________
Aside from her giving him an address, their short trip was spent mostly in silence, Anya trying to build up the courage to speak. She had literally ran away from Erik earlier, but he still came to help her. The least she could do was say was thank you.
“Listen, Erik about earlier-” she started but he held one hand up, stopping her.
“It’s nothing.”
“But it’s not. You could have easily turned away. Or just called a nurse or something. I mean, you're soaked.” She gestured to his clothes.
“I could have, but what kind of guy would that make me? Look, I care about you Anya. And I want us all to be able to still hang out. So, I can talk to the others and have them drop the whole thing.”
“But what if they're right? Kaitlyn's right? I am a freak. Just look at today.”
“Pipes bust all the time and the windows shattered from the pressure. It's an old building and a weird coincidence.” He spoke so confidently. What was it like to be that self-assured?
“Yeah well, I'm starting to think my entire life is full of them.”
“Most people’s are.” He said. His eyebrows scrunched and his thumb tapped the wheel nervously. “Hey, will anyone be home when we get there? Someone we should call?”
“No, my mom’s working late, and I really don’t want to worry her.” Anya answered.
“Well then, looks like I'm playing hooky today.” Erik smiled at her.
“You don’t have to babysit me. And what about your classes?”
“Anya, I have the most pristine record in that entire institution. Nay, the entire TOWN. Aside from maybe, my little sister Mia. ” he laughed, as they pulled up to her house. “I can afford a free day. If you want me to. If not , I’ll wait we can call your mom and wait  for her to get here. But under no circumstances am I leaving you alone right now.”
Anya sighed, knowing this wasn’t a battle she’d be winning.
“Fine ,but only if you order pizza and watch Steven Universe with me.”
“What's Steven Universe?”

Chapter 7 - Erik
Erik smiled down at his phone, as his friends agreed to try to convince Anya to join their clique. Not that he condoned ‘cliques.’ Erik was the type of guy who was friends with everyone. Or he tried to be at least. But there was something about Anya that pulled him to her. He couldn’t stop thinking about her. His mind replayed on loop the moment she looked up at him with those blue eyes. Not the ordinary sky blue, or the color of the paint flaking off of the old shed in the back of the field, or even the little flowers that spring up by the side of the road. Her eyes were blue like the sea, crystal clear blue- shimmering and crashing and churning. Looking into her eyes you could hear the waves falling against the shore, see the foam flying into the air. Captivating, deep, and full of untapped power. Her eyes were that kind of blue.
“Mijo? Esta's aqui?” his dad knocked on his door, breaking him out of his daydream.
“Si. Que pasas pa?” Erik answered, sitting up on the bed.
“Nothing, just seeing if you’re home already is all. How was practice? Did you blow them away?” he asked taking a seat next to his son.
“A hundred and ten percent, as always.” Erik nodded.
“Eso es mi hijo. I’m taking your mother out for dinner tonight to meet with some potential business partners. We sent Mia over to her friend’s house so you didn’t have to worry about watching her. There’s money for takeout downstairs.”
“Honestly, I’m pretty beat Pa. I’m just gonna take it down.”
“I’ll be sure to lock up then.” his dad said ruffling his hair playfully. Erik pushed his hand away, laughing,
“Bendición”
“Yo te bendiga. I'll see you tomorrow mijo”
Erik laid back on his bed as his dad walked out. He wasn’t lying when he said he was beat. In fact, mentally, socially, and physically exhausted was a better description. He loved soccer, his friends, and school, all of it. But the older he got, the harder it was maintaining the picture-perfect lifestyle the rest of his family seemed to have locked down. He closed his eyes, letting his mind wander off.
“Erik. Get up you lazy orc. Napping outside. Unbelievable.” Jess’ voice echoed through his ears. His eyes opened to his friend. But she looked different. Her hair was longer, placed in two braids. Her eyes had more of a childlike wonder to them. She was dressed in a silver and white dress, a diamond tiara atop her head. “We’re supposed to be practicing today remember? Xandias has almost perfected his abilities! I don’t want him to outdo us again.”
Erik groaned sitting up. His head turned to Xander who was on the other side of the garden. Two large boulders rolling around at his command. He looked over seeing them watch and waved, a cocky smile stretched across his face.
“Jessyka be nice.” an unseen voice spoke. His head turned to see Anya joining them. His chest swelled at the sight of her, beautiful as always. Like Jess she was younger and dressed similarly in a teal dress. Her raven hair was lose around her shoulders. She wore a tiara as well, but it was made of clear quartz and silver. “I’m sure Erik has been working just as hard and was just taking a break.”
“Yes, I have actually. Watch this.” Erik spoke confidently and pulled himself to his feet. His vision became tinted in red.
“Oh wow. You can make your eyes glow. I’m so impressed.” Jess sneered. Her eyes then glowed white, a small wind gust going around them.
“Stop it Jess!” Anya scolded. “Go ahead Erik.”
He nodded and held out his hand. He stared at the space it, concentrating. Out of the air a fire ball began to form.
“That's amazing Er.” Anya clapped, causing Erik's smile to widen. Xander walked over to join them, one arm wrapping around Anya's waist. She giggled as he whispered something in her ear. Jealousy ran thorough Erik's veins and his eyes began to grow brighter, his fire fiercer.
“Erik? That’s getting pretty big.” Jessica said taking a step back.
Erik looked down as the fire ball began to lose shape, the flames began to crawl up his arm.
“Quit it.” Xander said taking a step in front of Anya.
“Erik, put it out! Erik! ERIK!”
He woke up with a gasp, smoke invading his lungs. “SHIT!” he yelled as he jumped off the enflamed bed. He pulled the sheets off the bed and stomped them out until every ember was out. He examined his self, and although his clothes had been singed, his body was unharmed.
Not even a single blister.
A knock downstairs gained his attention, and he tugged on some sweats, making his way down the stairs. He opened the door, surprise flashing across his face at who waited on the other side.
“Landon? What are you doing here?” he asked the red-headed boy.
“I heard yelling. Is everything alright?” he said looking past Erik into the house.
“Yeah. Yeah everything is fine. I just got excited over
the game. You know how it is.” Erik lied. “Wait. Don’t you live on the other side of town?”
“I was on a run.” Landon replied not missing a single beat.
“Across town?”
“What’s with the interrogation? I try to be a good citizen and I get the third degree.”
“You’re right. Sorry. Thanks for the look out.” Erik said offering out his hand. Landon took it and a cold shiver went through Erik. Like his dream his vision tinted red, but only for a moment. His mind must have been playing tricks on him because Landon seemed unphased.
“Take it easy, Garcia. There are people depending on you to keep it together.” Landon spoke with a smile. He turned around, jogging back down the porch steps and down the street. Erik’s eyes watched him until he was no more than a speck in the distance.
What a strange guy. He thought to himself, going back inside the house.
Erik took out his phone, opening the group chat.
Golden Boy:  We need to talk.

Chapter 6 - Xander
“Mom! Dad! We’re home!” Xander called into the apartment as he held the door open for Jess and his two younger siblings, Xena and Zaine. “Looks like no one’s home yet. Tatertot can you have the kids start their homework? I’ll start dinner.”
Jess gave him a thumbs up, shuffling the two children to the dining room table. This was the third day in a row his parents hadn’t been home in time for dinner. They spent so many hours slaving away at work, the least he could do was make food. He pulled his hair back out his face and rummaged through the fridge. The only things left over were some ground beef and pasta sauce.
“What time was she out the door this morning?” Jess asked him, from the doorway.
“Four am maybe? Dad’s still out on the road. He’ll be back in a day or two.” Xander answered her with a sigh.
“Spaghetti again?” She made her way over, propping herself on top of the counter. “Are you sure you don’t want me to go grab some groceries for you guys? I honestly don’t mind.”
“Nah. It’s their favorite anyway. Save your money” he declined her offer. When you were raised the way he was, you learned to be sure not to rely on anyone, not even those you were close to. Sometimes those people were the ones that did the most damage.
He could feel her eyes on him as he moved across the kitchen. Except unlike their normal comfortable silence, there laid something more in the air.
“So.” Jess said softly, letting the word stretch out.
There it was.
“So, what?” he replied turning to look at her.
“What do you think of her?”
“Of who?”
“Who else?”
“Anya?”
“Yeah.”
“You liked her. Oddly enough. I mean inviting her to lunch, dragging me to her try outs
” he answered turning back to the stove.
“I know I like her. Don’t avoid the question.”
“I guess I don’t really know how I feel about her. We've known her for a day. She seems cool enough.”
“So, you don’t feel it?”
Xander stood quiet, his head going back to earlier that day. He had read Anya’s mind. He was sure of it. It was as clear as if she had said it out loud. He couldn’t shake the feeling that he’d seen her before.
“Yeah... I feel it.” Xander nodded in response. Jessica dropped off the counter walking over to him.
“What do you think it means?”
“I don’t know bu- “he started but stopped as the front door opened. His mother walked in, kicking her shoes off. “Mom? You’re home on early.”
“Hey honey, oh hi Jess. There was a problem with the system and since it’s so late in the day they let us come home.” She walked over giving him a hug. “Xena and Zaine?” she asked him, voice drowning in exhaustion.
“Homework and I’m cooking dinner. Why don’t you go take a nap? I’ll wake you when dinner’s done.” He smiled at her, kissing her head.
“You're such a good boy Xander.” She spoke distantly before sauntering off to her room, closing the door behind her.
“You know what’s weird too? Landon hanging out with her.” Jessica began speaking again once she made sure the twins went back to their homework. Xander rolled his eyes at her. Looks like she wasn't going to be dropping the subject. “He’s super anti-social. Aside from his sister he never seemed to bother with people. I wonder why that is?”
“Anya’s new, nice , and wasn't subjected to how much of a bitch his sister is. Plus, she's gorgeous. It's natural he'd want to be friends with her.” he said wanting to leave the subject alone.
“Gorgeous huh? I didn’t think girl next door was your type, Xan.” Jessica smirked and he flipped her off.
“She’s not.”
“Still
I think we should keep an eye on her. Adopt her into the group.”
“She’s not a puppy. Besides we have enough sunshine with Golden Boy around. I doubt he’d want to share the spotlight. ” he replied, dumping the sauce into the pot.
“Puh-lease. You saw the way he was watching her. He’s totally down.” she shook her head. But she did have a point.  Just then both their phones rang, a text from Erik popping up in the group chat.
Golden Boy: So, about Anya. Can we keep her?
Grumpy: What is with you two?! She's not a     puppy.
Golden Boy: YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN
Grumpy: You don’t even know her. I see this coming from Tot but you've barely talked to her.
Golden Boy: Yeah but I like her.
Grumpy: You like everyone.
Golden Boy: No more like..I don't know. She's different from everyone else. She stands out.
Tatertot: Like you're drawn to her?
Golden boy: Yeah, I guess so.
“See? There’s definitely something going on.” Jess badgered him again.
“You're over reacting but fine. We'll see how she mixes” He finally subjected, running a hand over his face.
‘Just what I need. Another person to take care of. What a drag.’

Chapter 5 - Anya
After finishing lunch with Jess and Xander, Anya’s day flew by pretty quickly. Finally, she was on her way to the swimming pool.  Swimming was the one thing she had always just been naturally good at. Back home she was ranked number one in the state. She was a shoe in to go to regionals, before the move that was.
She was hoping to get onto another team here, even if it was a little late, since the season hadn't technically started yet. After giving a stellar recommendation letter to school, as well as plenty of begging, she was allowed a late tryout. She walked out of the locker room into the pool, the oddly calming smell of chlorine washing over her. She was in her element now.
“Hey Sterling!” she looked up to see Landon, sitting in the stands.
“Hey! What are you doing here?” she asked walking up to him.
“I came to cheer you on of course! That and my sister is running the tryouts so I wanted to make sure you'd be okay.... she can be a bit....”
“Bitchy.” a feminine voice answered from behind her. Anya turned facing the new addition to the conversation. It was clear the two were related. Wisps of bright red hair peeked out from the girl's swim cap and her eyes were the same shade of emerald green. But unlike Landon’s, which were genuine and warm when he smiled, her eyes held a glint of mischief and mystery. “You must be the girl he was going on about earlier. I'm Kaitlyn. And by the way, Lanny is a taken man. ”
Anya fumbled over her words, taken aback by the girl’s
. abrasiveness.
“Kaitlyn, I already told you it's not like that.” Landon sighed.
“Whatever. I just had to let it be known. My twin has a thing for charity cases.” Kaitlyn shrugged. “Anyway, let's see what you got new girl.” Kaitlyn snapped her fingers and walked over to the pool's edge. “It's already pretty late to do sign ups, so simple. Beat me in a race and you're in.”
“Kaitlyn that's not..”
“Not what, Lanny? Fair? You’re right. But neither is getting to try out right before the season starts. She wants in on the team, she has to show she’s ready.”
“Fine.” Anya clenched her fist, determined not to let Kaitlyn get under her skin. The rest of the team took a seat on the bleachers, the excitement radiating off them.
Is she really going to go head to head with Kaitlyn?
I heard her say she was a good swimmer at her old school.
So? Kait is our fastest swimmer. She's gonna destroy her.
Anya closed her eyes, blocking out the whispers. She could do this.
“On my whistle” The coach spoke. “1...2...”
The shrill sound of the whistle echoed and Anya dove into the pool, the water enveloping her body. She cut through the water with each stroke but was still seconds behind Kaitlyn. Seconds that were valuable.
“MOVE IT ANYA!!” she heard Landon cheer from the stands. They both turned as they reached one end of the pool. One more lap to go. She pushed herself harder, feeling the water as it moved around her. She began to catch up to Kaitlyn.
‘Come on Anya.’ Her inner self pushed. She and Kaitlyn were neck and neck. ‘...there...just a little bit...faster.’
Everything around her took on a blue tint. The water between her hands felt different but whatever it was it gave her the edge she needed. She shot past Kaitlyn with the last of her strength, hand smacking against the concrete.
“YEAH!” Landon cheered from the stands. Some clapping came from the doors and there stood Jess, Erik, and Xander cheering for her as well. Well, Jess and Erik were cheering. Xander clapped at a steady pace. But the gesture made her smile.
She looked down in the water and for a moment her hands looked like they were webbed. She lifted them out, only to see they were normal. It was only her imagination, again. Kaitlyn lifted herself out the pool and made her way to the rest of the team. They spoke quietly for a moment before she turned, pulling her cap off. Long locks of fire red hair cascaded around her porcelain face.
“I give credit where credit is due. You’re fast, so you're on the team.” she sighed and stalked off into the locker room. The rest of the team came over congratulating Anya as she climbed out the pool. Jess and the boys pushed through them to get to her. Erik wrapped a towel around her shoulders. Anya turned to search for Landon but he was nowhere to be seen. She looked down at her hands, thinking back to that feeling when she was swimming. Was she really imagining all these things?
“You did really great out there.” Erik smiled at her. Anya went to thank him but was cut short by Jess bear hugging her.
“You totally rocked that water girl!” the petite blonde exclaimed. “You were lagging and then it was like a torpedo!”
“Thanks, but what are you guys doing here?” she smiled, hugging Jess back.
“Tatertot made us come. But honestly it was worth it to see Kaitlyn demolished like that.” Xander chuckled.
“I told you! It’s not everyday someone makes that girl eat her words. We should celebrate!” Jess offered.
“I’ll have to pass. If I'm late to practice MY coach will kill me. But you did a great job Anya, seriously.” Erik said, placing a hand on her shoulder. She blushed, biting on the inside of her lip to stop from smiling. “I’ll see you guys tomorrow!”
The coach blew a whistle, beckoning her over.
“Yeah, looks like I've got to go too. Raincheck on that celebrating. Thanks for coming guys!” Anya waved her new friends off. The coach sat her down and began going over schedules and requirements to stay on the team, but she was only half listening. She was too focused on the emerald green daggers, staring her down from Kaitlyn.
After practice Anya dragged herself across campus. She had never been so exhausted after just one race. 'I really must have let myself go in the off-season' she thought to herself. She stood on the curb of the road, phone in hand as she considered asking her mom to come get her. It was only a few blocks, but with the way her muscles ached it might as well have been miles. A black Range Rover pulled up in front of her and she instinctively took a step back. The window rolled down revealing a grinning Landon. She let out a sigh of relief.
“There’s little Miss Phelps.” He smiled. “Need a ride?”
“Actually, yeah. That be great.” Landon got out, throwing her duffle bag into the trunk while she slid in to the passenger seat. “You're a life saver. My body feels like jelly.”
“I bet. That was some race you had back there. Kaitlyn was not happy.” He said pulling off down the road.
“Is she ever?” Anya teased looking over at him. Landon laughed in return.
“I know she comes off rough. But my sister and I
. we’ve been through a lot. She doesn’t like letting anyone in. But she has a good heart I swear. Unfortunately, it’s just deep, deep down. She really only lets me in. Well me and Alyce.”
“Is Alyce that girlfriend she was referring to?”
“That she is...” he trailed off. Anya cupped her chin and fluttered her eyes at him. “What are you doing?” he laughed.
“Details! Does she go to school with us? What’s she look like? OH! Do you have pictures?” Anya egged on.
“Okay, just stop doing that thing with your eyes. You look like you’re about to seize.” He shook his head. “Well you know her name’s Alyce and no she doesn’t. She’s...hours away from here.”
“Oh, so you’re long distance?”
“Yeah
” he sighed.
“How long have you two been dating?”
“A few years now.”
“Wow Really? You must really love her then.”
“Yeah she’s great. Really great.” He said softly. He was silent for a few moments and then cleared his throat” Hey, aren’t you supposed to be giving me directions? We've sort of just been driving without a destination.” Landon changed the subject. Anya took the hint and dropped it. For now, anyway.
“Turn right here. Go down until the corner of Fremont. Then stop at that yellow house.”
The rest of the ride was silent aside of the crooning of Michael Buble on the radio. But it wasn't awkward.  If anything, it was comforting.
“You weren't kidding when you said it wasn't far.” Landon spoke as they pulled into the drive way. Her mom still wasn’t home yet, nothing unusual.
“Thanks for the ride Landon. I owe you.” She smiled.
“Don’t mention it Anya. It was literally a five-minute drive.” He said, walking around and grabbing her things out the trunk. He nodded for her to make her way to the door as he carried her things. “Plus...I don’t live far.”
“Still it was nice of you considering you just met me.”
“Yeah well, I have a really good feeling about us. Being friends, I mean.”
“Yeah? Me too.” She smiled, taking her things from him.
“I can pick you up on my way tomorrow? We both don't have class until 11.” He offered her.
“Yeah sounds great. Thanks! ”
She gave one last wave to Landon before stepping inside and closing the door. She listened to his truck drive off and made her way up the stairs to her room. She let her bags fall onto the ground with a loud thump. Stanley lifted his head in the enclosure, watching her.
“Hey Stan. Did you miss me?” she asked taking him out and letting him slither across her shoulders. “You would not believe how great of a day I had...”

Chapter 4 - Anya
The sound of the grandfather clock in her history lecture rang, signaling the end of her final morning class. She made her way down to the exit alongside Landon. By some miracle all their classes had lined up for the day, so he had been playing her tour guide.
“I'm supposed to meet a girl I met earlier for lunch. Do you want to come? She seemed pretty nice.” Anya offered him as they walked through the doors outside.
“I have lunch plans actually. We can meet up later though, are you done for the day?”
“No, I still have swim tryouts.”
“No kidding? My sister is on that team. Are you sure you're not stalking me Sterling?” he joked.
“In your dreams.” she shook her head, giving him a wave good bye. Landon gave her a small salute, merging into the crowd.
“Hey Anya! Over here!” Jess echoed through the court yard. She was sitting under a tree, waving her hand frantically in the air. Anya waved back and started to make her way over happily, hugging her books against her chest.
"HEADS UP!" someone yelled. Her head jerked around, and she watched as a football came hurtling towards her. She gasped and with her hands full the only thing she could do was close her eyes, preparing for impact against her face.
She waited.
And waited.
And waited.
“Hey...are you okay?” a voice finally spoke.
Slowly Anya opened her eyes finding the football only a few inches from her face, a hand wrapped around it. She followed it up the tanned, muscular arm to their face , and she felt her cheeks heat up
involuntarily as she took him in. There stood her savior, dressed in jeans, a plain white t-shirt and a letterman jacket.
Now, let it be known that Anya wasn’t the type of girl to just swoon over a cute guy, especially not a jock. But the way the sun shone on him just right, making the specks of amber in his whiskey-colored eyes shine as they looked down on her worriedly; she couldn’t help herself. It was the stuff of movies. He asked her again if she was okay, and that's when Anya realized she had been standing there gawking silently.
"Oh! YES! I mean... yeah...I'm fine. Thanks." she answered in a fluster. He gave her a smirk and turned throwing the ball back in the direction it came.
"WATCH IT HERRIDGE" he yelled back before bringing his attention back to her. "I’m Erik. It’s Anya, right?” he asked, and she gave him a confused look.
“You know me?”
"We are in Stats together." he answered, one arm stretching to scratch the back of his head.
“You remember all the girls in your classes?” she joked.
“Only the pretty ones.”
The sound of someone running grabbed her attention and she looked to see Jess bouncing her way towards them.
"Anya! I saw what happened. Are you okay?” Jessica’s asked as she looked over her. When all seemed well, she pulled her into a hug and turned to Erik. “Good save, oh Cap-ee-tan! I owe you for protecting my new protĂ©gĂ© here.”
“Hello to you too Tot. And it was my honor.” Erik chuckled, sending another look at Anya. She tucked a piece of hair behind her ear, smiling. Jess' eyes darted between the two.
“Oh no you don’t. She’s mine. Keep your grubby paws off Golden Boy.” Jess spoke, latching on to Anya’s arm.
“Golden Boy?” Anya asked eyebrow raising.
"It’s stupid-" Erik sighed but Jess cut him off.
“Erik is Strongfield’s most eligible Adonis. Athletic All-star, Mayor’s Son, High School Valedictorian, Junior Class President-”
“Alright. Alright. She gets the point.” he rolled his eyes, his tanned skin unable to hide the pink hue in his cheeks.
“And he’s modest.”
“I hope you know what you’re getting into. Jess is a little high maintenance. Like a Pomeranian. ”
“I’ll show you Pomeranian!” she growled, only causing him to laugh.
“And tiny angry human is my cue to go. Golden boy stuff and all to do. It was nice officially meeting you Anya.” He spoke. “See you around?”
"Definitely." Anya nodded smiling back at him. With that he gave a wave to Jessica and started jogging back towards where the rest of the soccer team waited for him. Anya hadn't noticed she had been watching him leave until Jess cleared her throat. She blinked a few times and looked over at the blonde. “What?”
"Less than five hours here and you're already under Golden Boy's spell" she said shaking her head. "I am disappointed in you."
“I have no idea what you're talking about. “Anya lied, she felt her face heat up a bit and cursed it for betraying her. She walked ahead to where she had seen Jess sitting before.
"Right sure you don't." Jess answered sarcastically, plopping down with her back against the tree. Anya sat on her knees, not wanting to dirty her skirt. "Not that I blame you really. The guy was hand sculpted by the gods, it should be illegal to look that good." she joked handing her a sandwich. One that was almost lost to the ants under them as a voice startled Anya.
"Must be nice to be illegally good looking" it spoke from behind the tree. Anya looked at Jess who must have known who it was because her smile brightened.
"How long have you been lurking weirdo?" she asked snapping her fingers a few times. "Stop being a creep and show yourself." With that a boy dressed from head to toe in black came from around the tree. He had shoulder length dark hair, most of it concealed by a black beanie. She focused on his eyes, which were darting back and forth as he scanned her, shining in the sunlight. They were a deep, earthy brown - the color of the the ground after torrential rains. But there was something else in them, something glistening. They held secrets, the same way a pot holds layers of deep soil- cradling- because it is essential to keep the plant safe. The roots are held in place the same way his dark, liquidy eyes held so tightly onto his secrets. It sent shivers through her.
"And who’s this?" he spoke eyes still not leaving Anya. She crossed her arms uncomfortably. Jess picked up on it, thankfully, and smacked his leg.
"Stop that and be nice. She’s my new friend.” she ordered and the intense stare he had been giving Anya ceased.
“Dammit Tatsal you always ruin my fun” he smirked and plopped down next to her.
"I'm sorry for him...” she shook her head. “Anya, this is Xander Niles. Xan, this is my new best friend Anya. “ She introduced them.
“You mean someone finally took you off my hands?” Xander teased her. He gave Anya a genuine smile this time. “It’s a pleasure.”
“It’s nice to meet you too." Anya said returning it. She wasn’t too keen on how he had looked at her earlier, but it seemed to be his thing.
‘If Jess likes you well
you can’t be too bad.’ She thought to herself. .
"Yeah well she's a bit delusional." he said quietly. Anya's heart dropped and she looked at him. She hadn’t said that out loud. Had she? The boy didn't react. Perhaps he hadn't actually said anything. First the dream and now this. She was losing her mind. Anya took a bite of her sandwich, shifting from one knee to another. Xander’s eyes darted to her knees a moment before he sat up a bit.
“Jesus how can you stay like that for so long? You’re making my legs hurt” he spoke and shrugged off his leather jacket, holding it out towards Anya.” Here. Sit on this." He wore a cut off shirt that revealed two muscular arms, covered in small scars. “So, who were you guys talking about anyway?”
“Erik. ” Jessica answered and receiving a death glare from Anya, which she pretended to not see.
“Why am I not surprised?” Xander rolled his eyes. “What heroic act did he do this time?”
“Golden Boy saved my little grasshopper here from her face being rearranged. You should have seen the way they were looking at each other. I thought he was going to pounce her right there.”
“It wasn’t like that!” Anya tried to defend herself. However, it only made her look more guilty.
“Don’t worry new girl. That’s how he is with everyone. Likes playing the welcome wagon. ” Xander shrugged in dismissal. “The guy goes through girls the way Jess does a pack of cigarettes.”
“Oh, like you don’t?” she raised an eyebrow.
“Hey, at least I don’t pretend to be Mr.Right. Girls know what what’s up with me.”
“Oh
well that’s nice to know. Like I said it doesn’t matter. It wasn’t like that.” Anya smiled, but her shoulders drooped a bit. Another group of people walked by and stared a while at the three of them. “ It’s better than everyone else who’s acting like they’ve never seen a person before!” Anya yelled loudly, causing them to skulk away.
“Strongfield is boring Anya. Most of the people here have been with the same class since elementry. They’re just excited since you’re the first new girl since
well me.” Jess answered her.
“Personally, I think it has less to do with how long it’s been and more to do with who it is. I bet if some average Joe moved in no one would bat an eye.” Xan interceded. Both girls looked at him with wide eyes. “What?”
“Was-was that almost a compliment?” Anya teased.
“I am capable of noticing that you are above average in the looks department. Don’t worry though, you’re just not my type.”
“Oh, I’m heartbroken.” She shot back sarcastically. Her lips curved into a smirk to resemble his and Xander’s eyebrow raised.
“Oh I like you. I like you so much! ” Jess smiled, bouncing in her seat.
The three of them laughed and Anya felt a weight lift off her shoulders. It was the first time in a long time, Anya felt like she had finally belonged somewhere.

Chapter 3- Anya
Anya strolled around the final corner and saw the tall stone walls of Strongfield College. It stood like a castle, towering over the neighboring buildings. The closer she got more of her future colleagues came into view, grouping off into their cliques, laughing, and joking around. An icy chill swept up her spine, and she stopped walking. She glanced around, but nothing seemed out of the ordinary. She took out her phone and pretended to be engrossed in the Buzzfeed video that played. But her eyes scanned the people around her, searching for the culprit as she walked.
When she made it inside, and she let out a breath of relief as the doors shut behind her. The chill had thankfully vanished. She rummaged through her bag for her planner, so she could find her schedule. American Romanticism was her first class of the day, Room 711. She gazed up at the three corridors in front of her, frustration passing in front of her face as she realized none of them were labeled. She turned in a circle looking for a school map or anything to point her in the right direction.
"Lost?" a voice spoke, accompanied by a tap on her shoulder. Anya quickly turned coming face to face with a short pale girl. Her blonde hair was cut into a bob cut that framed her face. “Are you lost?" she asked again this time speaking slower and pressing the tips of her closed fingers together, before separating them. It was sign language for lost.
"Oh! I'm not deaf. You just took me off guard...but yeah I am
lost." Anya answered repeating the gesture.
"You know sign language too?" the girl asked, her eyes crinkling at the ends as her smile widened. Her eyes were blue, but not the same as Anya’s. Her eyes were almost translucent, glossy, like the palest blue glass mixed with a grey that was almost silver. Too soft to be turquoise, too bright to be baby blue.
"I took it back home. It was thoughtful of you to use." Anya complimented her. The girl beamed proudly.
"Thank you. Sign language is honestly such an underrated skill. Do you know there are three hundred sixty million deaf people in the world? And schools still say that ASL isn't a priority language to give as a class.
That it's an 'extra-curricular'. The absolute nerve. There are enough problems in this world. Why should we have communication barriers? My principle from my old high school is as old as dirt. I bet when he starts losing his hearing he'll be wishing he listened to me!” Anya raised her eyebrows, amused by the woman’s passion. “Sorry. Social justice gets me riled up."
"No need for apologizes. Being multi lingual myself I completely agree."
"How many do you speak?" the girl asked curiously.
"Six. I’m taking Mandarin this year so hopefully seven soon!” Anya smiled proudly. She spoke English, Spanish, Italian, French, Gaelic, and Russian. She had also mastered braille and sign language. Languages always seemed to come easily to her. "Russian was the hardest to learn. It took me about two years to become fluent. "
"Oh keep talking, I’m loving everything coming out your mouth. I’m Jess by the way. Jessica Tatsal.” Jessica held out a hand to her.
“Anya Sterling." Anya questioned as she shook her new friend's hand.
“ Well Ms. Sterling, you are in luck because we’ve just began the origin of our friendship!” Jessica laughed. Her playfulness and laugh were infectious causing all of Anya’s anxiety about the first day to fade away. "So as resident former new girl, I now self-appoint myself as your guide and adviser on all things Strongfield. What’s your first class?" She asked holding her hand out. Anya obliged handing Jessica her planner with her schedule written out. "Sweet your first class is right down the hall from mine." the small girl smiled. She nodded her head signaling for Anya to follow her through the mass of bodies. "We'll hit there first and get you situated. Looks like we don't have any classes together today, but our free time matches up and we have a Tuesday/Thursday class. OH! You're a swimmer? Awesome! I hear our team is pretty good but it’s Captain is Kaitlyn
” she rambled on and on.
Not trying to but eventually Anya tuned her out. Her now sea green irises scanned the halls and posters advertising clubs and sports. It seemed that the school was very in to extracurricular activities. ‘With a town, this small I suppose they don't have a choice unless they want to die from boredom' she thought to herself.
When Jessica stopped walking, and was writing something on Anya’s schedule she tuned back in. "Okay I got to jet, but I wrote down my number so text me if anything okay? Good luck!" Jessica smiled, skipping down the hall. "OH! MEET ME IN THE QUAD AT 12:30! WE CAN DO LUNCH! “She called back and then disappeared into the crowd.
And just like that Anya's nerves were back. She looked at the door Jess told her to go into to. Room 711. Three numbers had never looked so menacing. She stood there watching as the hallway slowly started to empty. You can do this Anya. Taking a deep breath, she finally entered. In true clichĂ© form, everyone’s eyes shot up to look at her.
She searched for an empty seat but it seemed to be to no avail. The conversations continued but now at a more hushed tone only making her feel more insecure. She was suddenly wishing she never let her dad pull strings to get her in after the deadline. And that she had left her hair down. At least that would have helped blocked some of the staring.
Everyone had already fallen into their cliques and groups and here she was like an outcast.
Again.
“Hey! There's an empty seat here.” a red headed boy waved her over. She let out a breath of relief and squeezed through the rows before taking her place next to him.
“Thank you. I was beginning to think I'd be standing the whole class.”
“I know what it's like to start a semester late.” he countered, holding out a hand. “I'm Landon.”
“Anya Sterling.” she replied, taking his hand.
“Yeah. I know.” Anya's eyes widened a bit and Landon face palmed himself. “NOT that I'm like stalking you or anything. Word just travels fast around here if you didn't notice.”
“Oh, believe me I have. I thought we were out of high school?” Anya rolled her eyes.
“Oh no, Not here in Strongfield. The cheerleaders just move on to Sororities and then 'Social Clubs'. Small towns get boring so school activities and gossip are all we really have to keep us entertained.”
“So, you're a townie then?”
“Not Born, but Raised.” Landon spoke in mock-pride. “Honestly though, it's not as bad as it looks. Sooner or later they'll get bored and move on to the next over-dramatized scandal.”
The door of the class opened as the professor walked, apologizing for his lateness. Everyone settled down and class began. Anya fumbled around looking for the chapter they were on. She dropped the book and Landon caught it, winking one of his emerald eyes. She took the book and it was opened on the page they were on.
'Thank you' she mouthed and then tuned into the lecture. Maybe this place wouldn't be so bad after all.

Chapter 2 - Anya
Anya woke up with a jolt, head snapping back and forth as she scanned the room frantically. A pair of glowing blue eyes stared at her from across the room and she jumped so hard she fell off the bed. She lifted her head back up slowly, and as her own adjusted, she realized it was only her own reflection. No glowing eyes. After a moment of calming her heart rate, she took another look around. Everything was in its place.
She was safe.
She was home.
Well, her new home, but home all the same
She climbed out of her bed slowly, inching towards the mirror across from the bed. Everything seemed fine. Her dark hair, which usually fell easily down her back, was disheveled and tangled against her scalp with help from the layer of sweat blanketed over her skin. Even the over-sized t-shirt she wore was more wrinkled than normal as it hung off her shoulder. This was real, but then, everything in the nightmare had felt so real.
"What was that?" she spoke looking down at Stanley, her black rat snake. He slightly lifted his head up in his tank, two beady black eyes looking up at her. "What do you think Stan? Am I losing my mind?” she spoke to him. She opened the covering of his tank and placed a hand inside. Like a thousand times before he wrapped himself around her arm and she stroked him lightly. But this time something caught her attention. Gently, she moved his head a bit to the side and noticed his head stopped right next to a small, almost unseen scar on her right arm. The same place she felt the arrow pierce in the dream.
‘No. Absolutely not. Don't go twilight zoning yourself’ her inner subconscious scolded. Her head racked for a reasonable explanation, but to no avail. ‘I could ask my mom? I’m sure she knew how that got there.’
Then, as if she had been summoned by her thoughts, the door swung wide open. There stood Diane Sterling, bone colored suit, arms crossed and a look on her face that spelled trouble for Anya.
“What on earth are you doing? It’s you’re first day at a new college. You can’t just-” she stopped talking, eyes trailing over her daughter. “Anya you look terrible! Are you feeling alright?!”
Anya breathed out a laugh and rolled her eyes at her mother. “ Just had a rough night sleeping is all. But thanks for the confidence boost.” she replied. Diane’s face flashed remorse for a moment but was soon replaced with her normal upbeat smile.
“Just put that thing away and get ready. You can’t be late on your first day. Remember -”
"First impressions matter. I know and I'm going. I still have an hour and the school is only a few minutes away." she defended herself, moving towards the bathroom.
Diane walked over to her daughter’s closet and started to rummage through it, undoubtedly looking for the perfect 'first day' outfit for Anya.
"Oh right, of course. This coming from the girl who takes two-hour showers. “Her mother retorted, tone playful and a smirk just hinting in the corners of her mouth.
“It’s my third year in college, not my first.” Anya stuck out her tongue playfully before shutting the door.
The steam of the hot water hit her face and she felt her own lips smile. Throwing her t-shirt to the ground, she stepped in and let the warm water wash away the unpleasantness of the dream. After all her mom was right. She had the perfect blank slate to start over now. No drama from her last school to follow her. She could be anyone she wanted. And she needed a clear mind to do that.
Anya finally emerged, a towel wrapped around her hair. She walked over to her bed, which of course was now made. On top the outfit her mother had laid out: a teal skater skirt, white top and teal flats. There was a sticky note on top of the clothes.
Wear your hair up but nothing fancy. Keep your make up, if you wear any, light. ~Mom♄
She would have rather worn some jeans and a hoodie, but that was a losing battle. Anya finally strolled down the stairs fully dressed, her jet-black hair sculpted into a messy bun on top of her head. She pushed back a few whips she left out to frame her face, but now they were just annoying her.
"Oh, my little guppy! You look beautiful." her mother exclaimed walking over to her. She started to do some minor "fixes' on Anya's ensemble. Thus was the life, being a child of a former personal stylist. “Do you want me to drop you off on my way? I can walk you inside. I know how nervous you must be. Did you put your suit in your bag? Oh, and don’t forget your planner. Did you remember to buy a scientific calculator because-" her mother shot out questions as she pulled Anya’s necklace out from under her top.
“Mom please. Stop okay?" she answered her mother. “It’s not like I haven’t survived college before. ”
Barely survived that is. The last year had been a rough one for her. She just couldn’t stay focused on anything this last semester and had only passed by the skin of her teeth. Which is why she was now living with her hovering mother and going to community college. Her parents had agreed that her father just did not have enough time to keep on top of her. Not that she needed anyone to keep on top of her.
She was fine.
She was an adult.
Just a new one
 A level one adult.
"Oh, I'm sorry Guppy. I’m just
worried after last year. You haven’t been yourself and you’ve never been anywhere farther than New Jersey. Strongfield takes some adjusting compared to New York." Diane spoke and kissed her daughter's head. “You know your way, right?”
"Yes mom...we have only driven it 15 times since I’ve been here. Please, go before you are the one late for work?" Anya pleaded, handing her the keys.
"Okay. I’ll go. I love you and have a wonderful day!" Diane called as she made her way out the door. Anya grabbed her backpack off the table and did a double check to make sure everything was there. Once satisfied she walked out the door, locking it behind her.
Today was the start of a whole new Anya.
Everything would be better.
Or at the very least, different.

Chapter 1
A young Ainya sat cross legged in her bay window, staring out at the sea below, watching as the waves crashed onto the shell covered beach. A bright light flashed through the sky tearing away her gaze. She pressed her face against the cold glass, trying to find the source. That’s when it hit. Whatever it was. The room shook violently, so hard it knocked her down onto the ground. She crawled underneath a nearby vanity, screaming as trinkets and glass fell onto the ground around her.
“Ainya!” A raven-haired woman rushed into the room. She threw herself around Ainya, shielding her from the chaos. After a few moments it called and she loosened her hold just enough for Ainya to wrap her arms around the woman. She breathed in the woman’s scent, a mix of salt and sea breeze, and calmed down enough to speak.
“Mom, what’s happening? What was that?” she questioned her, but before she was given an answer the sound of metal clinking echoed down the hall. Ainya moved behind her mother who quickly stood up ready to defend them. However, when the individual entered the room covered in a silver armor, Ainya felt a wave of relief wash over her. The man removed his helmet, letting it fall to the floor with a clang.
“Are you two alright?” he asked.
"Ulric, thank the gods." Her mother sighed and pulled them both over to him. He dropped a blood tainted sword, so he could take them into his arms. “What’s going on out there?”
“It’s the clan. They’ve breached the outer defenses." he explained to her. He kissed Ainya’s head and she looked up into his pale blue eyes. There was love in them but something else as well. A hint of fear? Regret? “You both must leave, immediately.”
"And leave you? Absolutely not! After what was done to Cav-"
"THIS IS NOT UP FOR DEBATE." he bellowed cutting off the woman's protests. It caused Ainya to wince in his arms. Her father rarely raised his voice at them. He whispered an apology, placing another kiss on her head. "This kingdom and our daughter are all that matter now. Not me. Not you. Now you know what we have
to do." His voice was soft now but laced with angst. Nyra nodded, tears forming below navy irises. A thunderous roar vibrated through the skies and Ulric looked out the window. The faint sounds of battle cries drawing nearer. "They're almost at the gates." he spoke, voice darkening. He pulled Nyra close and kissed her deeply. He spoke no words to her, but the message was clear. This was a goodbye.
“Father, what’s happening? Why aren’t you telling me anything?” Ainya pleaded with him, a hand reaching out to grab his. He squeezed it tight, with a small, sad smile.
“Everything is going to be just fine Ainya. Now go with your mother. She’s going to take you to the others. I love you.” With that he picked up his sword and helmet and made his way back down the hall. Ainya called out for him a few more times while Nyra composed herself. She turned her daughter, removing the serpent necklace from around her neck and placing around Ainya’s.
“Alright my sea star, we have to go. No matter what we do not stop. Do you understand?"
“But mother what is happening. You said what happened in ...”
“Do you understand Ainya?” Nyra spoke again, her voice taking a firmer tone. Ainya knew it was not the time to argue and simply nodded. With that Nyra lead them out into the hall stopping at a wall just before the turn for the stairs. “Revielio” she spoke holding her hand against the wall. The bricks began to dissolve in front of her eyes, revealing a hidden passage way. “Come now.”
Ainya’s throat swelled up nervously as she followed her mother into the dark passage way. The opening closed behind them, and her hand reached out to touch it. Solid. Torches ignited, lighting their way in the narrow corridor. Her skin crawled looking up at the spider webs and vermin droppings surrounding them. The sounds of swords and armor could be heard on the other side of the walls as they made their descent. Finally, they came to the bottom of the staircase.
“Revielio.” Nyra chanted again.
The wall opened as it did before, letting them exit to the garden behind the castle. To Ainya’s surprise two of their fastest horses awaited them.
