Edgar Cairo (1948-2000) was a Surinamese-Dutch poet, author, painter and performer. In 2011, Cindy Kerseborn directed the documentary « Ik ga dood om jullie hoofd » about his life. It highlights Cairo’s role as a pionneer in the thinking about a black identity and a black consciousness in the context of the Dutch colonial history and postcolonial present. #blackeuropeanhistorymonth #afropeanhistorymonth #edgarcairo https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt-hyyRHqTT/?igshid=k5dk14s58job

Legendary ice skater Surya Bonaly. She was in the French national team. She broke down boundaries in figure skating especially being one of the few black female skaters at that time. Watch the episode dedicated to her in the documentary series « Losers » on @netflix. #suryabonaly #backflip https://www.instagram.com/p/BvcmfXNDhl4/?igshid=18flz1ldommsj

#johnypitts @afropean, Notes from Black Europe • 2019 • (image: Paris metro by Johny Pitts) • • via @guardian: « The term “Afropean”, Johny Pitts writes at the beginning of this beguiling book, “encouraged me to think of myself as whole and unhyphenated ... Here was a space where blackness was taking part in shaping European identity at large. It suggested the possibility of living in and with more than one idea: Africa and Europe, or, by extension, the Global South and the West, without being mixed-this, half-that or black-other. That being black in Europe didn’t necessarily mean being an immigrant.” » #johnypitts #afropean #afropea #blackeurope https://www.instagram.com/p/Bz29WmwIhf_/?igshid=1e1c7zpn9p05a
