Bi Pan Discourse and Why I Think Biphobia Rarely Happens Within The Community
I often stay on Instagram and I see so much Panphobia on there. It usually happens under posts about Trans people, usually about Trans Men. In one instance, a post had said not to change your sexuality to Bisexual/Pansexual if you identify as Gay or Straight while dating a trans person. While I agree, I just kept on seeing these Bi people in the comments harping on and saying how Pansexuality is transphobic when it isn’t. I feel like choosing to not date trans people isn’t really transphobic as it is a preference. (Keep in mind that I’m trans myself and I’m fine with dating trans men.)
But after seeing so much hate to Pan people I just feel like there’s something deeper to it. I dunno, maybe I’m talking out of my ass, or maybe it’s this subconscious narcissism of each side that thinks that one should be their sexuality because the other isn’t “valid”. And honestly, who gives a fuck if something is valid or not? Do whatever you want, just don’t tell other people what to do and don’t be a dick about it.
Now, I’m gonna explain why I think Bi, Pan, Omni, and Poly are all not the same and are all completely valid.
Bisexual: Attraction to two or more genders
Pansexual: Attraction regardless of gender (i.e. gender blind)
Omnisexual: Attraction to all genders but does not identify as gender blind and gender preference can play a role. (Gender preference can also fluctuate.)
Polysexual: Attraction to three or more genders
They are all similar but they are not the same. No party can say what’s valid and what isn’t because they have no right to. No one is the emperor of LBGTQIA+ or sexualities/genders. I’m fucking sick and tired of this fighting when each side won’t even educate themselves about the other sexualities. This all really blew up when someone who claimed that they’ve been “studying” LGBTQIA+ and said Pansexuality was Biphobic.
The reason why I think it got so much attention is because Bisexuality is the second most celebrated sexuality in this community. I mean, look everywhere, on posts, videos, or any type of content relating to LGBTQIA+. Bisexual is usually there. Majority of posts I’ve seen have completely excluded gay people. It’s now just Bisexual or Lesbian for some reason. I think it’s because that 70% of Gen Z people in LBGTQIA+ are Bisexual. So, it’s either to please the biggest crowd or there’s a small discourse that’s essentially erasing other sexualities.
I do want you to keep in mind that I do not hate Bi people, I may have a prejudice though. The reason why is because I’ve been labeled as Bi countless times when I’ve specified that I’m gay and have no attraction to women or enby people. I’ve also had great feuds and fights with Bi people who were Panphobic.
Anyway, now since you know that Bisexual is one of the most celebrated sexualities, now you know why I think there’s little biphobia in LGBTQIA+. The only biphobia within the community has moved on and people have educated themselves on it. But outside, yes, there is a lot of Biphobia. I will not deny that. But you cannot say that biphobia is so common in the community when it’s celebrated every single second.
