24. underrated character:

i think i'm going to have to say thea. she doesn't get a lot of credit for... well... anything. i think she has a stupid amount of devotion and a bigger heart than she gets credit for. i think kevin believes in her whole-heartedly because she's given him every reason to. people talk about how kevin had people on the outside to look towards, like wymack and jeremy, when he was stuck at evermore with his abusive pseudo-husband, but he had thea as well. he never stopped believing in his relationship with thea. he had that relationship to look forward to when he graduated. he has thea's support. so, yeah.

i'll also never stop thinking about how notorious women-hater andrew minyard took one look at thea who was about to have it out with kevin and went like, "meh, it'll be fine." and how neil was about to be concerned but then took his cue from andrew and decided not to get involved because thea's not going to hurt kevin. i think it's really funny. it's like when you go to say hi to a dog and its owner is like, "huh. he isn't normally this nice to strangers."

Taskmaster is legitimately the best show ever like. Five comedians compete for zero money and minimal prestige, which means they're all there to have fun and cause chaos and you can tell that theyre all enjoying it. The two hosts have a weird psychosocial bdsm dynamic and they make it everyone's problem and they both actively consent to it and enjoy it. They have fancy chairs and a house on a golf course that get destroyed regularly. Everyone embarrasses themselves and has a great time doing it. The host whos the "sub" and regularly gets verbally and at times physically abused by every single person on the show organizes everything including a large portion of the abuse. They put every single episode for free on youtube along with lots of bonus content so that every single person can watch it. They have a ton of memes and references and Easter eggs hidden all around but it doesnt limit your enjoyment if you miss something. You find yourself rooting for a special little guy but its equally fun when your special little guy looses. You can pop it on in the background and tune in when you see something funny and laugh but it also makes great background noise. They even have a cow.

25. make a prediction/wish for future books

you should NOT bet on me. i have often just been completely wrong. i really thought there would be more to zane reacher and there just. wasn't.

ok but, for tbc, my completely unfounded predictions are:

bryson is arrested

jeremy faces more scandal and chooses to resign as captain to be replaced by xavier

joshua appearance

jean and jeremy do not get together or even kiss (yet)

in terms of the kevin books...the sense i'm getting from tsc and tgr is that the author really really wants to write a bit more about kevin and riko. she has the chance to make it so fucked up if she wants but i have no idea if she will. if i may be kind of harsh and presumptive here, she seems to be quite susceptible to public opinion and doesn't seem willing to risk alienating readers in favour of explicitly writing in nuance. for all its discussion of heavier themes and second chances, the books so far tend to favour clear-cut morals and unambiguous villains. but maybe the kevin books will change that up. i don't know but i'm not going to keep my fingers crossed about it.

i do hope it's about kevin's first gay divorce and his first straight relationship.

things that i think would have a devastating effect if they happened in future books and would really like to see:

kayleigh flashback (just any amount of kayleigh mentioned)

kevin's first time getting drunk

kevthea (call me delusional but i really have high hopes for kevthea in the future books.)

I think in pursuit of ‘queer joy’ and ‘good representation’ we’ve kinda lost and maybe even often denounce the idea that queer characters in fiction can make mistakes equally as egregious and wrong as cis/hetero/allo characters. I’m not talking about those sort of itsy-bitsy mistakes that generally don’t change the way that readers/consumers view the character as a whole, ones that are fixed with a ‘sorry’ and a good talking session—I’m talking about something earth shattering and traumatizing, something that could make the reader have a reaction that isn’t necessarily good, something that can’t be atoned for. Something that doesn’t make you feel sympathy, but asks you a question that maybe doesn’t have a good answer. Queer people are burdened irl with living in a complex society that pushes complex traumas and creates complex feelings that don’t always result in black-and-white action. And I feel like disavowing these themes in every genre and not exploring them at all as a result sometimes makes a very one dimensional shell of a character with no real statement to be made
