Jellal was an early, EARLY, villain, who arguably was not completely responsible for his actions because he was literally brainwashed. and he could have used that as an excuse, mope around for 2 arcs or so and then join the heroes but Jellal said "no bitch, not for me"

when he found out what he did he was literally like "oh my magic stars, how the fuck do I fix this?"

he let himself be arrested for crimes he didn't even remember he commited

all the heroes were ready to beat up government officials for him but he literally stopped them

he refused to be with the woman he's loved since he was a boy, who meant so much for him that after he lost his memory due to almost dying horribly the only thing he could remember was her name. and this woman was ready to be with him but he literally refused her bc he doesn't believe he's good enough for her

he forgave the woman who caused him to go crazy when he had all the right to hate her guts bc he understood that she was also a victim, and they became each other's greatest allies

he made a guild and swore to himself to never pursue happiness and spent the rest of his life making the world a better and safer place to pay for all the hurt he caused bc the reason doesn't matter he still killed and enslaved ppl

any other series? he would have been forgiven by now, and he was. but Jellal could never forgive himself, he never looked for excuses, he never gave performative apologies. the only reason Jellal did what he did was because he was controlled and not acting like himself, so he showed ppl exactly the kind of man he is

like, is fairy tail perfect? fuck no, but Mashima knows how to build his characters
