I wish age gap discourse hadn't spiraled the way it has because I want there to be a safe space to say "Men in their 40s who date 25 year olds aren't predators, they're just fucking losers"

All this discourse over who does "painting with light"
Hiroshi Nagai's paintings need sunglasses to look at.
They look like how it feels to walk across a parking lot on a 98° summer day without a speck of shade in sight.
They look like heaven but also like you'd burn your bare feet on the ground.
Even when you can see shade you know it's not enough and the minute you step out you'll be burnt to a crisp like a vampire.
And it's BEAUTIFUL

It turns out that the concept of aging well, with regard to media, means different things to different people...
My experience has been that pulpy mid-20th-century sword-and-sorcery ages incredibly well. Conan, Elric, Dying Earth, that whole vast metagenre. Even the stuff with embarrassingly retrograde content concerning race, gender, etc. Especially that stuff, honestly. Sword-and-sorcery is trying to feel mythic and epic and powerful and not-like-the-world-you-know, and ideological distance helps with that; as time goes by, reading that weird content feels less like "the author was an old-fashioned coot" (because the author is a less-salient figure with every passing year), and more like "this is the writing of another time and another place."
And on the flip side -
I love Revolutionary Girl Utena to death. I did when I first saw it in college, and I still do now. I will never stop being kind of obsessed with it. Everyone who knows me knows this. But I have to admit that it hasn't aged well.
It's a story that, however crazy and hypersymbolic and allegorical it may be, depends on the idea that it is holding up a mirror to real experienced reality. But...it's just not, anymore. The world has shifted too far out from under it. The core conflicts no longer feel plausibly real.

intersectional feminism: mastuebateion forms an important part of the lived experiences of indigenous trans sex workers, and if you listened to their voices, you’d know this already. so when you say ” mastuebateion needs to be cleansed from this earth,” you’re actually saying that
situationism: ”do not mastuebate” is just one more injunction to productive labor, productive activity to fuel the world-machine. arise, and
left communism: oh, as opposed to continence, marriage, sleeping around, and cohabitation? that is to say, liberalism, liberalism, liberalism, and liberalism?

Rainbow capitalism is bad because the acceptance it was a symptom of was always gained not from queer people earning the right to exist on our own terms, in ways that we defined, but by agreeing to dispose of what made us inimical to capitalism and the modern order. Our rejection of the reproductive paradigm and the family structure that replicates oppressive structures in successive generations and propels them forward through time, our demand that we destroy the chains of identity that flatten the human experience and decrease the dimensions along which humans can express themselves. We sell it all down the river for dreams of our own white picket fences and surrogacied children, institutional medical care, repackaged chains of identity like sexual orientation. It is the carrot on the stick that capitalism and modernity sells us.
the rapid disintegration of rainbow capitalism pretty much encapsulates the problem with rainbow capitalism in the first place: it is and always was performative fair-weather allyship that evaporated in the face of any real political pressure
