i was thinking about how i’d like to have seen sharon’s participation in the ca:cw airport battle, in a way that feels natural to her characterization while highlighting her unique qualities.
though sharon wants to establish a professional truce with steve, she keeps her cards close to the vest and makes her moves discreetly. she’s loyal not to any one individual or mantle, but to her belief in fighting for the right thing however she can. she eventually makes her alignment known by joining up with team cap during the ensuing fight, to steve’s surprise. privately, he knows he’s been giving her a hard time but his pride is still too wounded to admit it. yet here he sees the full extent of sharon’s heroism and self-sacrifice, and he finally recognizes a kindred spirit. sharon’s actions do the talking, and the two of them form an unspoken but strong connection before the next sequence of events.
i added some more details under the cut of how this could have played out in the movie (p.s. in this scenario ca:cw acts as an avengers movie instead of a true captain america III, so we’d still have another film to close the trilogy and develop sharon/staron further. it also doesn’t take into account what SHOULD have happened in ca:ws had sharon been a lead as intended. ideally i would have introduced sharon in the last act of ca:tfa and restructured the whole series, but this was just a thought experiment with the ‘canon’ movie material we have).

Casino Royale is still the best James Bond film of all time. No I will not be taking criticism.

Franchise runner: Wow, audiences seemed to have a really positive reaction to Casino Royale. That’s good! Do we know why?
Data analyst: Yes, of course. First off, the villain isn’t the main focus of the movie.
Franchise runner: How so?
Data analyst: In past Bond movies, it’s all about the villain, who the audience barely knows past monologues. The villain is wild and showy but lacks depth. In this movie, it’s clear that the villain isn’t just there for the sake of villainy! He actually isn’t even important in the third act, and while he’s interesting, he’s not the best part of the movie.
Franchise runner: Interesting, interesting. So what’s in the third act that people liked?
Data analyst: Emotion! The stakes aren’t high for the audience if the threat is just Europe Dies, that’s too non-specific and no one really cares. You need to put high stakes where it matters—the life of the main character.
Franchise runner: Oh, but does the audience really care about Bond anyway?
Data analyst: Yes! This movie expands past his plot functionality to give him real emotions, feelings, habits, and internal thinking. He’s a nuanced and complex character that transforms in a clear way over the course of the movie!
Franchise runner: I see, I see. But what about the action sequences :(
Data analyst: There are still tons of those! But they’re not action for the sake of action, they all say something about Bond. The opening one shows his recklessness, the airport one shows his willingness to kill, and that’s later contrasted when he’s living the quiet life that he truly desires.
Franchise runner: But what about the sex?
Data analyst: Turns out we don’t need sex for a successful movie! This has implied sex and almost sex, but there are never naked women on screen and Bond is never really creepy about it.
Franchise runner: Are you serious? I thought people loved bland hot women.
Data analyst: Surprisingly no! Another difference in this movie is that the Bond woman is nuanced and interesting. She has her own motivations and is treated as a separate character rather than as an extension of Bond. It makes it so Bond isn’t a character on his own, but has a partner. This makes his own journey more interesting! He and Vesper dislike each other at first, they have a slow burn to a tragic romance.
Franchise runner: Wow. It seems like Casino Royale broke tons of new ground for Bond movies and it seems like audiences loved it.
Data analyst: Exactly! Do you want to incorporate these new features into the next four films?
Franchise runner:
Data analyst:
Franchise runner: No
