I'm not entirely sure about this but I vaguely remember hearing something in Sonic 3 about how Ivo pretends to be an orphan because his parents were abusive and he doesn't want people to know. Chances are I made that up in my head, but even if I did it sounds good as a backstory and I like it. My headcanon is that Robotnik hates Sonic because he doesn't understand why an alien like him could have the power he does and find a loving family, while he (believing himself to be perfect) was mistreated and left behind. This desperation for love but belief he'll never truly have it has led to his untrustworthy nature, and he sees material power and global domination as the only way anyone will respect him. He's so caught up in his irrational anger that he can't see someone who truly loves him unconditionally who's been right underneath his nose the entire time, and by the time he finally understands, it's too late...
