Shaking his head, Nack stepped forward.

“Yeaahhhhh, jus’ keep yer hands up, hot stuff! I COULD jus’ kick yer ass an’ call it a day, but WUH-OW! People like YOU that try an’ play hero? Mmmmm-HM! I know fer a fact you’ve got MORE than enough money on you, my friend!”

“What are you going to do? Shoot me? Am I supposed to be afraid?”

He didn’t recognize him. But there was something familiar about his voice. He couldn’t put his finger on what it was, it had been way too many years. But one thing he wasn’t, was intimidated. He’d stood down a gun more than once in his life. Been shot, too. He knew what a bullet wound felt like, and it certainly didn’t scare him. So he takes a step forward.

Of course, he wasn’t stupid. He was prepared, in case the guy actually decided to shoot.

Another step closer.

“Come on, what’s holding you back? Shoot me.”

He kept both hands out, as to prepare for the shot. The second he heard the noise, he’d shield himself. Not that he really cared about getting shot, but he knew someone back home would be unnecessarily concerned. He deserved better than that. People like this guy were the reason he worked so hard. To save the injured, because someone thought they were cool waving a gun around.

“Me playing hero is no different than you playing villain.”

Another step.

“You’re just trying to compensate for something. Maybe you weren’t loved enough as a child. Looking at you now, I can see why. Look how completely unattractive you are compared to me. You don’t try very hard to look good, do you? You’re as ugly on the outside as you are on the inside.

Hurry up and shoot. I’m a very busy person and I haven’t got all day. Surely you’ve got a brain somewhere in there to compensate for your lack of looks.”

The squirrel is set down, and he takes the music box. He needed a free hand to do that carefully. And he needed his other one too if he wanted to open it, so he gets to it.

He moves his arm from behind his back, and hands Ray a bouquet of roses. Among them were some flowers he’d picked himself from the mountains to add to the bouquet. The flowers from the mountains always smelled so beautiful to him, he figured it’d be a nice addition.

Nestled between the roses, was a card. He’d written on it what he couldn’t say for himself.

‘Happy third anniversary.’

He’d even drawn a little heart on it.

With his other hand free, he carefully opens the music box.

It doesn’t take long for a wide smile to spread across his muzzle, both at the dancing figures, and the song playing. He knew that song. It was special. During a time that he’d temporarily had his voice back, Ray had told him to sing him a song. He’d tried, and failed pretty badly by the end of it.

But it looked like the song was still pretty special to Ray too.

Bark’s eyes got a little teary as he continued to smile. Reaching over, he pulled Ray into a one armed hug.

This had to be one of the most special gifts he’d ever gotten.

A gasp.

What a beautiful bouquet, which he gladly accepts, holding the blooms up to his nose and taking a big sniff. Roses always smelled so sweet, he could never get enough of them. The other flowers mixed in were quite special as well, adding into the scent without taking anything away from the roses. It seemed that this bear had picked well.

Then there was the card, which was very special. It put a smile on this squirrel’s face. He loved this, he’d never get tired of receiving flowers for a gift, and he’d never forget the special card with the heart drawn on it. They would be cherished, even after the flowers had wilted, in due time. He could take photos of them, so that he would never forget what a beautiful bouquet he received on the night of his third anniversary.

At the one armed hug, he gives a smooch to the bear’s side. This was a special day, made even more special by that special someone.

“Hard to believe its been three years. Time really has a way of going. Three years since that first kiss. Three years since you bumped your snout into my face. Three years since we started our life together, and now it’s grown into something I could have never imagined. It really is the greatest feeling in the world.”

Bark gives a nod. It was a very special day. It was why he’d gone and kissed Ray as soon as he’d gotten home, without much of a greeting other than the kiss itself.

He’d gotten a little something too, that he was hiding behind his back with his free hand. Though he’d wait for the squirrel to go first.

From his hands, comes a music box. A specially tailored music box specifically for this bear right here. If it was opened, it played one of their special songs, while a bear and a squirrel danced around on the display. The entire thing was made out of pure crystal, so it would be wise to be careful with it.

“Happy anniversary.”

Just in time.

Bark picks the squirrel up with just one arm, and kisses his lips softly.

Oh. That was nice. He, of course, returns it with every bit of emotion.  Nothing recharged you from a day at work like a kiss from your man.

“Today’s a very special day, and I picked something up on my way home that I wanted to give you.”

“I tried baking a cake today. I even vaguely followed a book for it. But the example picture doesn’t look anything like what I got.

I’m sure it’s still edible. Just have to find someone to pawn it off on.”

He doubted there was anywhere to order food like the one he made for Ray anyway.

[”We should. Though I do not think I will be able to fall asleep right away. I feel too excited.”]

“Then instead of going straight to sleep, we could read a book together. I’ll read the  one we were working on during vacation out loud. We were getting to some interesting parts, I’ve read the story once before. But I love it, so I’m happy to read it again.”

He hops up for one more smooch, before he begins walking. It’s a short trip to the bedroom, where he takes his book off of the nightstand, and nestles into the soft bed.

“Ready when you are.”

He lets out a tiny huff as he rubs his cheek against Ray’s. He didn’t want to let go right now. But he had to. Such were the downsides of sign language.

[”I hope it does not rain. And what about the food? Should I make it or should we just buy a bunch of food?”]

“That one’s up to you. If you want to make it, make it. If not, I’ll just buy it. All that overtime has upped my bank account nicely. Not that it was suffering, but it’s nice to have so much extra.”

One more smooch to the nose, before he hops off. “But right now it’s late, and if I don’t get at least eight hours of sleep the entire world will suffer. So let’s go to bed.”

A whole week???

Ray is pulled close into a hug immediately, as Bark gently bumps his forehead against the squirrel’s own.

A whole week! It was going to be wonderful. And he wouldn’t waste a second of it.

He squints, but it’s with a smile. He sort of expected that kind of reaction at this point.

“Let’s have a picnic tomorrow. It’s going to be a little cloudy, but that’s okay. I prefer cloudy days to pure sunshine, anyway.”

Smooch to the nose.

“I feel like I haven’t seen you in ages. I’ve been working so much.”

Another kiss is given, this one more of a peck than the last, before he moves his hands away.

[”I am always here to send you off and greet you, though.”]

There’s a pause in his signing.

[”But I would be lying if I said a bit of extra time would not be nice.”]

“That’s just for a short while, though. I’m talking something more long term.”

He seats himself on the bear’s body, and looks directly up.

“So I took the week off. I’ve accumulated a lot of vacation days again, just like before. I had plenty to take a week off.”

He tilts his head a little. Oh??? They could do that? Not that he was complaining.

“If you say so. It does not feel cool to me. But at the same time, I am not dying from the heat. That is always a plus. I hope it stays like this for a while. Though I do dread the day the temperatures suddenly get higher. It is inevitable.”

At least he pretty much had unlimited ice cream for those days.

The bear gets up, and picks Ray up on the way, and walking out of the house. Did he have to carry the squirrel? No. But if anyone thought he wouldn’t spend the extra time today as close as he could be to his boyfriend at almost all times, they’d be very wrong.

“Maybe later on. Its been relatively tame so far, compared to what it normally is in the summer.”

It didn’t really bother him, being picked up. He was pretty used to it by now. He didn’t really care when it was this guy picking him up. Anyone else he probably would have smacked across the face.

“I’m only home three hours earlier than usual. Not that much. But I guess it’s better than nothing. I’m sure it’s going to be a one time thing. This is a busier season, since more people are outdoors getting themselves hurt. Especially children.”

“We could stop by the hospital. I could spend time with the kids and you could do some overtime.”

Ray wasn’t the only one that could mess around.

There’s a short fit of laughter, which he soon stifles, though he does let out a snort.

He moves forward, and leaves a kiss on the squirrel’s lips.

“Do you want to go to our spot? Under the tree? Unless it is too hot. I have not actually been outside today.”

“They don’t want me to get anymore overtime. That’s why they sent me home so early.”

The kiss is good. He appreciates that.

“Under the tree would probably be shady. But I don’t think it’s that hot out today. We’ve had a surprisingly cool summer so far.”

He shows some confidence by pretty much sprawling out in front of the squirrel. If only there was a big bear around here to spend some extra time with, huh? Oh well.

He knew Ray liked it when he was confident. But at the same time, he’s very clearly trying not to laugh.

“I suppose I could spend the extra free time with you.”

Obviously he was messing around. Of course he’d want to spend free time with his boyfriend of all people. The squirrel lowers, lying down on his front, and propping his head up with his arms.

“But what do we do?”
