Alternate universes vs alternate dimensions

Clary: "Remember that time when we went into that alternate dimension and took over our alternate bodies?"

Jace: "I try not to."

Clary: "I mean, sure, it was dangerous and weird, but don't you think it would be so interesting to explore other universes?"

Magnus: "Ah, Biscuit, there is a very important distinction between alternate dimensions and alternate universes. See, every living being belongs to a universe. And inside that universe, there are multiple alternate dimensions. These dimensions can diverge minimally or greatly from ours. You said I was still a warlock, but the shadowhunters had become obsolete because the demonic rifts had been sealed, right? In another dimension, I could be a seelie, or a werewolf, or even a shadowhunter or mundane. Or there could be a dimension where the shadow world as a whole does not exist, and we all are mundanes, just going about our human lives. Or we are all elves living in a forest. Or anything else you could possibly think of. Some of us might have died in some of them, or been born later, or as a different gender. But at one point or another, our souls would exist in these dimensions.

However, when you are talking about other universes, then those come with their own sets of souls and alternate dimensions. *We* don't exist there."

Alec: "So... if we went to a different universe, what would happen?"

Magnus: "If we didn't simply perish on entering the other world, we would be "adapted" into that universe. We would basically be an extra. Our souls wouldn't be bound to a specific form - in our case here, a humanoid one. So our souls could be put into any kind of being, human, animal, insect, or whatever else lives there."

Simon: ".... Are you telling me that if there was a universe with Pokemon living in them, *I* could be a Pikachu?"

Alec: "Who keeps inviting the vampire?"

I yearn for much more Morgenstern and Wayland family lore. I fear i do not know nearly enough about either of them as i would like. Im so intrigued by the houses that Jace once thought he himself belonged to. But also, they are both such infamous families within the shadowhunter community, yet we hardly have any info on them outside the main 3 morgensterns (Valentine, Sebastian, and Clary) and the main 2 Waylands (Michael, and the inquisitor that tortured Annabelle) — which even then we barely have any actually info on them.

Also, we only ever really saw them in TMI, which i think is the main distinction between other families, like the Herondales, Lightwoods, Fairchilds, and Blackthorns, is in my mind. The latter were integral to the main TMI trilogies, and since the Morgensterns and Waylands were also a massive part of the og trilogy, i initially assumed they would also be explored in later books.

I do understand some of the criticisms of Better in Black but I think everyone needs to get like 50% less nitpicky with it (& I'm someone who's nitpicky!!) this book was likely not edited!! because editors cost money!! this is a kickstarter we raised the money for!! every other tsc book went through editors as a part of the publishing process and even then they miss stuff, who knows what editing bib got beyond Cassandra Clare herself (I imagine not much). and yes, even extremely accomplished and experienced authors need editors, editing is an extremely extremely important part of the writing process
