I don't want to be a parent at this current moment in time, but I've always known that if I did decide on that path, I would read The Hobbit to my kid as a bedtime story. I would take out my beautiful green cover with red and gold lettering and Tolkien's illustrations edition of the book and read it out loud with voices and singing to them every night until it was finished. It started its life as a bedtime story for Christopher Tolkien and it should continue being a bedtime story forever onwards.
