be free

be free is a direct sequel to begin, which provides us with KB’s POV and ends this story at the moment KB decides that he wants to be just that: gay free. I know some people are worried about the ending, because we have the shots of Yoojung looking upset – but that one scene can’t be separated from the rest of the MV – and from begin. 

In this MV, we see KB accepting his desires and deciding, even if it will be difficult, to fall. 

the crane

begin set up the cranes as a wish for freedom, for a world in which Yoojung (and KB) could be themselves, without prejudice, and maybe, be together: they’re an invitation from Yoojung (who has accepted his own desires, but knows the world has not) that KB tentatively accepts at the end of begin.

So of course, the crane shows up at the beginning of be free.

KB wakes up from the first night, where he’s been brought home, drunk, by Yoojung, who leaves the cranes there as a wish/hope/promise – when KB sees the crane, he has this moment of awe –

then of overwhelming feeling. I think it’s joy: I read joy in the long stretch of his body, in the way he falls back onto his bed. But it could also be that heady mix of anxiety and happiness that hits you when you realise you have a crush (oh god no I like him so much).

And that’s what takes KB back to the diner, looking for Yoojung, and where their flirtation begins in earnest: both knowing that’s what’s happening. 

The crane then returns at the end of the MV. 

I’m not entirely sure where in time this shot takes place (he’s wearing the lacy shirt? When does that happen? Someone make me a shirt timeline pls), but it happens at the end of the MV and is, thus, the last word.

We’re shown this moment right after he’s left the bed with Yoojung in it. In these scenes, he looks hesitant and quiet, in direct contrast to the joy and wonder of their date scenes, 

but then he sees the crane: he holds it in front of him and we see his hesitation turn into determination.

As the caption for the music video says: 

“I couldn’t confess because I didn’t want to get hurt. The moments of hesitation. Let’s talk even if we’re hurt. Even though it’s broken and painful, let’s face it together.”

Bringing the crane back in this moment shows that it’s now a shared wish/hope/promise that KB commits to: he falls, out of frame, into the new world they’ll face together. 

the smiles

Where begin shows us all the looks Yoojung was sneaking, the tentative attempts to connect to KB without eliciting a cruel or violent response, be free shows us all the times KB saw Yoojung. 

When Yoojung isn’t looking, KB watches him and it makes him happy, though that happiness is private.

Each time we get a smile, it’s small, off to the side, down and away from the camera/viewer/Yoojung. We’re not really meant to see these smiles, and I like to think that KB can’t quite help himself when he makes them: he’s not trying to smile; the smiles are just...coming out. 

Even the scene when they’re out on their adorable little date (that makes me wanna scream it’s so cute), we see the difference between Yoojung and KB’s queer joy: Yoojung, smiling wide and open, turned towards KB (and the camera) vs. KB, his back to us, his face turned away from Yoojung and facing the ground. But they’re both smiling.

Yoojung is happy he’s allowed to, finally, be free with KB. 

KB, here, is someone who isn’t sure he’s allowed to feel this way. 

But we do get two (free) smiles from KB in this MV: the first, when KB starts dancing with Yoojung, and the second, right at the end. 

Before their date, Yoojung is dancing, freely, with abandon (like no one’s watching) and he stops when KB sees him – he’s afraid of what KB will say/do. He’s afraid of the potential judgement, until KB joins him. While they’re dancing together, silly, openly in front of a large window, KB’s smile comes, joyful and free, for the first time. It confirms the theme for these two music videos: they can be free, even if others are watching them, if they’re in it together. 

the ending

And this brings me to the ending, where they are not together on screen. 

It hurts a little bit, I’ll admit! Of course, I wanted them to have that last moment on screen as an undeniable confirmation of a happy ending, but that doesn’t mean this is a sad ending: instead, this ending is a challenge. We end the music video as KB, after looking at the crane, then looking at the camera, smirks – 

This happens over the lyrics “One more time could make it right,” which are themselves a promise that this is not the end. It’s a bit bittersweet, because it implies that it’s not right right now. But it makes sense to me that they’re both a little worried: it’s the first time they’ve had sex with each other (and, I suspect, the first time KB’s had sex with a man), and neither is entirely sure what this means:

Yoojung here feels nervous, afraid – he’s alone, in KB’s bed, and he doesn’t know what kind of reaction he’ll get. Closeted people may not always be the kindest after they have sex, so Yoojung, who has consistently been worried about KB’s response to his actions is, again, worried about what KB will do, now that they’ve crossed this line. 

But KB isn’t nervous – he’s the one who’s been smiling shyly, looking away from the camera and hesitating to meet Yoojung’s eyes – and here he looks straight to camera. 

As he promises “one more time,” he falls into bed (where else?), with a grin and freedom suffusing his limbs. He’s literally taking the leap that Yoojung asked for in begin and I honestly couldn’t ask for a better ending to this story – because it’s not an ending: it’s a promise, a commitment, to continue.
