Someday your hands will be old and wrinkled, the skin spotted and bunching over your knuckles. And a child will watch you make something. It's a simple task, you'll have done it a thousand times before. But to that child, the smooth, confident way your hands move will seem like impossible magic. You have to keep living.

Imagine being the last owner of Hanako, that 226 year old Japanese koi that was spawned in 1751 and died in 1977. A fish that outlived 7 emperors. A fish that survived the Second World War. And she dies in your care. I would never recover.

Within those groups it feels as though there is still a divide between "I have it hard so I want everyone to have it better" and "I have it hard so why should anyone else have it better", with the latter increasingly growing bigger.
I work with kids, and while some "the whole world is against me and everyone just wants to harm me" is surely age appropriate development in puberty to some degree, I feel like this lack of empathy in both directions (towards kids, and from kids not understanding that not everything around them is hostile 100% of the time) is a reflexion of the bigger picture. It seems to me that even among groups that should work together because they're in a similar position, everyone seems to fight for themselves. And while there are certainly reasons why some people feel that way, it feeds into a circle of hostility that weakens minorities especially because they're the ones who need community support the most.
(and I don't mean people having to deal with racism or transphobia within groups of the same economic class for example, but people being transphobic and racist within the same economic class to begin with).
So do we actually have a good, bankable, materialist explanation for why it seems like half the world has lost their fucking minds?

I don't normally post photos or talk about the protest actions I participate in, but I was at the Chicago Stand Up For Science rally on behalf of my job recently and this sign took me out at the knees.
