Blood in the Water, Ch. 4 of ?
Lena sent Kara a message explaining a last minute work trip on Friday night. By the following Thursday, she hadn’t reached out again.
Kara tried not to let her worries run away with her, but it wasn’t like Lena to let her texts go unanswered. As the days dragged on, and the silence stretched, Kara replayed their last conversation, and each loop highlighted Lena’s uncharacteristically vague details in stark relief.
By the time Kara called Jess, she was certain something is wrong. Jess confirmed in a single sentence.
“Miss Luthor took the week to address some personal business,” Kara told, as Jess’ voice tightens in concern. “She didn’t tell you?”
“She did,” Kara fibbed quickly. “I thought she meant next week. Thanks, Jess.”
Lena’s apartment was her first stop. She found it empty, with nary an item out of place. Only a few clothes were missing, enough for a couple days, nothing more.
Her next search was far more extensive.
High above National City, Kara opened her senses. The sounds of the city washed over her, deafening in its incessant motion. Slowly, she filtered through the din bit by bit, listening for Lena’s voice.
Hours later, Alex hailed her over the comms. “What’s wrong?”
“Lena’s missing. I think. I don’t know.”
“You think she’s missing.”
“She told me she was going out of town on business.”
She could almost hear Alex’s exasperation. “Yeah. Kind of in the job description.”
“She told Jess she was taking personal time.”
“Okay. Kara, have you considered the possibility she’s on personal business, and opted for discretion? As in, she wouldn’t appreciate her business being pried into?”
Kara swallowed. “She isn’t answering her phone. Or my texts. I haven’t heard from her since she left Friday.”
Silence crackled over comms. “Okay. That changes things.”
“I didn’t want to worry Jess in case it’s nothing, but Alex–”
“I know.”
Trouble had a habit of finding Lena. Kara prayed she’d be able to find Lena first.
—-
She listened for hours that night, and came up with nothing. She asked Clark to keep an ear out too, in case Lena’s business had taken her to Metropolis. But her gut said that Lena was still nearby. Still in trouble.
Vindication came three days later. She heard it on her way to the desert facility, nowhere she should have heard it in good intentions.
Not Lena’s voice. Her name.
“Don’t be a fuckwit, Lena, just kill him!”
Kara changed course in a blink, and punched through the roof of what she’d assumed was an abandoned facility. A volley of bullets from a 9mm handgun bounced off her chest, unfelt as she absorbed the sight of a wiry woman behind a computer console, gun in hand, and of Lena, unconscious and wired into an alien-looking device.
In the next heartbeat, Kara had her hand around the woman’s throat. “Release her. Now.”
To her surprise, the woman’s alarm faded abruptly. “Not yet.”
“Wrong answer.”
“Wait–” the woman coughed as Kara tightened her grip. The gun she’d fired moments ago dangled from one finger, no longer a threat. “There– table!”
Kara glanced at the desk, and registered the small folded note marked with a single letter in familiar script.
K.
Not releasing her prisoner, Kara slowly stepped backwards, until she could grab the note with her free hand. Inside, she found a simple message.
I trust her.
It wasn’t signed, but the writing was unmistakably Lena’s. It was smooth and flowing, lacking any hint it had been written under duress.
Kara glared, but set her captive down onto her own two feet. She kept a firm grip, but gave the woman room to catch her breath.
“Who are you?” She demanded. “And talk fast.”
“My name is Lara Croft– a friend of Lena’s. I asked for her help in tracking down an historical artifact, and she agreed. That’s what she’s doing now.”
Kara glanced at Lena, and the device that draped the table in wires. “What is that thing?”
“Its called the Animus. It allows a person to go back in time and inhabit the consciousness of another individual. It’s perfectly safe–”
Lena cried out sharply, jolting on the table. Kara tightened her grip on reflex, eliciting a sharp gasp.
“Wait– she’s fine, she’s fine,” the woman gurgled. “I can show you…”
After a moment’s hesitation, Kara released her. Rubbing throat, Lara made a beeline for the console, tyoing rapidly to pull up a feed. The screen filled with a first person perspective of a fight unfolding.
“Is that a kilt?”
“Pteruges, actually. She’s in Greece. Or what was once Greece. It’s… complicated.”
Kara glared. “Uncomplicate it.”
“I don’t know exactly how it works, okay? But it’s perfectly safe.”
“So she was screaming in fun?”
“It’s just a sympathetic pain response. I was told she’d have a strong connection to the subject, but she’s taken to it better than I ever imagined. She’s advancing at an incredible rate.”
“What artifact?”
“Hm?”
Kara grabbed Lara by the shoulder and spun her around. “You said she was helping you find an artifact. What. Artifact.”
Lara blinked, looking Kara up and down for the first time. Her eyes caught on the crest in the center of her chest, but her reaction remained tucked out of sight.
“The Staff of Hermes,” she said finally. “It’s reported to be a source of great power.”
“Reported? By whom?”
“Legend. Every legend I’ve ever read on it says it can do incredible things–”
“You strapped Lena to a table to chase down a legend?”
“Let’s be clear: she’s not strapped down. She went in voluntarily. She’s due to come out for a break soon– she’ll tell you herself.”
Kara shook her head. “Pull her out now.”
“That will damage her,” Lara countered. “She needs to desynchronize on her own.”
Not good enough, Kara wanted to say. But already she could see Lena’s heartrate beginning to calm, the last soldier neatly dispatched and… dumped behind some bushes.
What in Rao’s name had Lena gotten herself into?
Already the perspective was moving on, climbing onto a horse and riding out into the unknown. Kara weighed her options, and made her choice.
“Fine,” she snapped. “Then we wait.”

These artists are so awesome
the best kind of apology
Tumblr media
“Kara…” Lena whispers, looking close to tears. “You did that for me?”
Kara shakes her head, pulling Lena closer. “I did it for both of us. But it felt good - I should have done it sooner. I was holding myself back because it was easier that way, but I didn’t think about what it was doing to you. Especially this week. I’ll tell everyone else tomorrow, I promise. I just wanted Alex to know first, she would have killed me if Winn found out at the same time she did –“
Kara’s ramble is cut off by soft, insistent lips, and the entire weight of Lena’s body being thrown into her arms.’
