Oh boy, a new toy!... Think back to the last new gadget or luxury item you bought. From the time we were little kids, we have experienced joy and excitement when we get a new toy. We can’t help but have a little bit of that new toy feeling creep in when we’re making significant purchases - like marketing for OUR business. We are just as vulnerable to marketers selling marketing as we are to marketers selling consumer goods. And why wouldn’t we be? Growing our business is the vehicle to growing our wealth. This shiny new marketing system, tactic, or strategy is what will bring you the economic power to buy all the other shiny toys you want. Trust me, I’ve been there! The thing is buying marketing for your business, whether it’s software tools, information, consultation, or services, is the most serious of business decisions. The prospect of new sales is exciting, but implementing an effective marketing scheme is the result of a lot of hard work and discipline. And time! The time it takes to see the full results is way longer than how long the excitement will last. The disappointment at not seeing early results is going to cause you to be even more susceptible to further marketing promises. Congratulations, you now officially have... Shiny Object Syndrome. Branding isn’t just about a logos, colors, and fonts. Branding is all the thoughts and feelings people in your market have about your company. Your brand exists the minds of other people. That’s why it’s some of the most valuable real estate in the world. It’s ownership of a small part of a person’s mind. Their opinions will include how well you keep your promises. In the middle of your sales funnel people are aware that solutions exist to their problem. Now they are trying to decide which solution is right for them. This is where you introduce a “unique mechanism.” You need to explain exactly HOW your solution solves the problem. Medical science reports are boring and hard to understand. What I say here is generally true, even though there will always be exceptions (disclaimer: always test paid traffic). Also I’m talking about paid advertising. Younger audiences are better represented on Instagram and Snap Chat. Middle aged and older audiences are better represented on Facebook. Instagram is always growing, but I find IG users are less willing in general to leave the platform and visit a website. Facebook is getting more expensive, but if the fundamental economics of your offer make sense, it still beats nearly every other form of advertising... on Earth! Don’t abandon Facebook because it’s not a dirt cheap as it used to be. If you’re going to use IG, then be prepared for a long branding campaign. It will take time and labor and ultimately result in less conversions. So in it’s own way, it’s also expensive. Failure is great! It’s the easiest, fastest, and best way to generate the absolutely most important factor to entrepreneurial success... KNOWLEDGE!
