A discontinuous aikidoka novice performing unstable aikido. I've always had a loving relationship with somersaults, circles and spins, and I suppose that's one reason why aikido has remained very dear to my heart during all my very long summer and autumn and christmas and spring breaks.

What is aikido?
I found this really interesting video that explains all the important aspects of aikido, which if you are a practitioner or someone interested in learning about it should watch.
Here’s some comments that I would now like to make because I read all the comments that followed this youtube video, which were basically around the same concept of aikido is a terrible martial art that will probably not work because they are not “tough”.
All martial arts have a certain perspective, a certain philosophy that they think is the most important aspect of fighting and based upon this philosophy they have a different strategy that emphasizes different tactics. Is it a close, short, or long range fight? For instance, grappling is a close stance style, muy thai is short, and taekwondo is a long range fight. All of these martial arts have different goals and different tactics that they think will win them over their opponent; however, they will NOT work 100% of the time against every fighter that you meet, what happens if these ranges and certain tactics that all these martial arts depended on were not available to them. What I am trying to say is that the best fighters are those that are able to integrate the various of different martial arts rather than relying on one style. As a result, as a martial artist you can have a preference for a certain style or another but you should not ever bash other martial arts that you are not partaking in because you do not understand their philosophy!
“Aikido is a weak sport” : There’s hard style martial arts and then there are soft style martial arts. Hard style martial arts  meet force with force; whereas, soft style martial arts deflect that force. Let’s use Newton’s Third Law (for every action there’s an equal but opposite reaction ) What does this law mean for all those hard styles—-you will get hurt too! The aim of a soft style is to prevent that and deflect that incoming force (like a punch) and rather than blocking it to use the momentum of the opponent to get them off balance. If you think that deflecting a punch is “weak” because you are not taking the hit and being defensive, then I really hope that you will learn to become more open-minded.
People tend to think that aikido is fake and not real because it looks effortless, he didn’t break 20 concrete bricks, he didn’t jump into the air and break a board in half with a jumping front kick, he didn’t step into the ring and wrestle until he couldn’t take it anymore—-no all he did was just deflect your momentum. And someone that has never done it before will think that it is easy and brush off aikido as an insignificant waste of time; however, they are false—-aikido is not as easy and effortless as it looks. I can personally promise you that, I once read somewhere that you can send a student to do karate for a year and at the end of that year they will be somewhat efficient. Now send that student to learn aikido for a year and they will have just begun to understand what is happening.
I’m sorry for my extremely long rant, I just feel that people should not be throwing away a certain philosophy of martial art because of their opinion about it, no single martial art is dominant over any other—-the integration of martial arts is what makes an effective fighter. So, all I ask is to be respectful of others arts.
Have a fantastic day!
