Art Project #4 Performance Art
I was overthinking what I should do for my performance art for days not knowing what to do. Then I remembered that everyday life can be art too. For as long as I've had a car washing my car has been my personal escape/meditation. No matter how much I had going on in my life or how out of control my life seemed I've always found peace and control in washing my car. This may be an unorthodox post but it is close to my heart.

Art Project #3 Supercut Video
youtube
I was having a lot of trouble trying to come up with an idea for my supercut video and just generally overthinking. I figured why not make my project about something that makes me laugh and not overthink while I'm watching it. I decided to make a supercut video about one of the shows closest to my heart "Avatar the Last Airbender". I may not be anything revolutionary but it's something that Im passionate about.
I hope you enjoy it!

Reading & Response 4
Goldberg
Performance art began to grow and blossom after WW2, the idea was to incorporate sound and movement performed by the artist. The first college to really teach performance art was Black Mountain College after WW2. The students were taught that performance art is not a medium where everything has to be perfect. Performance art is a lot like life there are good and bad parts but that's what makes the performance exciting and unique just like life. There were other kinds of performance art that began to grow and evolve. Artists began to paint abstract paintings where the focus was not on the end outcome but on the movements the artist's body made when painting. There were also artists like Yves Klein who hired female models to cover themselves in paint and make imprints of their bodies on canvas. Performance art is all about the human body but it is also about society and our politics which in the end are all connected through performance art.
Coco Fusco
This article discusses Franz Kafka's performance art titled "A Report to an Academy" in the early 1900s. The performance is about a man speaking about how he was taken from the Golden Coast of Africa and paraded around Germany in a gold cage for years as a primate. While this was not explicitly based on a true story, the symbolism behind is deeply rooted in history. Imperialism and Colonization have intensely shaped our world in the last millennia. The United States was built solely on the idea that this land was our god given right (Manifest Destiny). Because our government and the general public believed that they didn't see any problem in the horrid treatment of the Native Americans. Sadly this is not the only case of Colonization and Imperialism destroying native cultures many of the modern countries we know today were built on those same principles. Going back to the golden cage performance the meaning behind that performance was the irony of having to demonstrate your own humanity. Performance art is not an art meant to make you feel comfortable its an art form that is usually about hard topics or social ideas that will make you uncomfortable or at least think in a new way.

Reading and Response #3
After reading "vanishing and becoming" by Sean Cubitt I found the idea that projection was the first art form fascinating. I hadn't ever thought about how shadows from firelight on cave walls must have been breathtaking to our ancestors from an unknown age. The comparison to modern filmmaking and possibly the most ancient art form of projection is an interesting new viewpoint that I hadn't ever thought about before. The thought of what life may have been like in ancient times has always been fascinating to me. So the stories of the first painter painting Buddahs Reflection and Butade's daughter outlining the shadow of her lover who may never come back are really interesting to me. While these stories may just be myths that have been retold for millennia they provide a glimpse of what art meant to people. Sean Cubitt also brought up a good point that art has always been a way for people to cheat death in some way by having their presence remembered long after their death. In reality, all art is a projection of the reflection of the reality that we see from our eyes. So the idea that the first art was quite literally a reflection of shadows on a cave wall is so fitting.
After reading Lea Collet's introduction to video art, the first thing that caught me was that because video art was cheaper than gallery art, it appealed to artists. This struck me because when I think of video art now I usually think of major feature films that are great but are definitely not cheap. I thought that it was really interesting how "Ever is Over All" by Pipilotti Rist was reused by Beyonce 20 years after its original release. It is crazy to think how much video art has evolved in 100 years from silent films to people being able to own their own handheld video camera in the 1960s to video art like "Ten Thousand Waves" by Issac Julian. I found Issac Julian's "Ten Thousand Waves" really interesting since it was an immersive film that was projected onto 9 double-sided screens which I haven't ever seen before. With all of the video art examples in this article, it's hard to talk about all of them. But what I really took away from Lea Collet's article is how video art is constantly evolving and artists are always looking for new ways to express themselves and their messages. The Internet is a modern art gallery where anyone can share their art and that's one of the reasons why video art is evolving so quickly.
Here are 5 Time-Based Art/Artists that I think are really cool

Art Project # 2 Gif Series + Artist Statement
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cartoons have been a big part of my life since I was a kid. Some people may think animated shows can't show as much emotional depth as something with real people, but I disagree entirely. I think that animated shows can make you feel just as much live-action. I just wanted to put together some of my favorite parts of media that I love, not all of them are from shows/movies but they're all things that I love and have stuck with me for one reason or another. I had a lot of fun making these gifs and have a lot of newfound respect for people who make gifs as well as the art that can come out of them.

Reading and Response #2
I've always appreciated gifs for how simple they are but at the same time, one gif can say so much. But before the class readings, I took them for granted a little bit. I never thought of a gif as art but after the reading, I think a gif can be art. Sometimes you come across a gif that just pulls you into it which isn't different from any other art form. Reading the class articles, made me appreciate gifs a lot more and look at them as modern art. I'm excited to start making my own gifs and see what I can make with them!
