That is actually terrifyingly close to my reading of him too.
Look. I know you’re all probably sick of me carrying on about Darcy (and frankly I think it is disputable how drastically he changes over the course of P&P, because pre-Elizabeth he is always good to people who belong to him even if he’s overbearing and smug about it, he’s never a monster, and post-Elizabeth he is still only somewhat good at checking his own snobbery) but this is a point that occurred to me and that I would like to make: Darcy has the personality of a Discworld witch. That is, selfish and powerful but in a protective of and generous towards his own sort of way.
Tiffany Aching would look at his character arc and go ‘oh he’s expanded his personal concept of how big his sheepfold is and recognised some of his sheep are goats and he has to let them do goat things.’

Can i say something problematique for terminally online millenials and people born after that point: I think the seeming lack of ability or willingness to call one another and chat on the phone with friends unprompted or out of the blue contributes to whatever hellish loneliness everyone is talking about feeling these days. Say what you want about boomers and old people but those guys mostly knew how to keep in touch with each other. Idk man call a bitch today

My roommate thought she hated cooking and then she moved in with me and started using knives that were actually sharp and realized cooking is fun. Sometimes I wonder how many other situations are like this. It's not you, or your skills. It's just the lack of correct tools. Everyone knows you need a knife in the kitchen but no one mentions a sharpening stone.

thinking about how varied and interesting and different each unique perspective of asoiaf is and then you get to a sansa or (later on) theon chapter and get to read like twenty pages of the main character suffering more than jesus for no reason. and not that i don’t think that can be interesting it’s just funny to me for some reason.

The death of a conspicuously humble and compassionate pope at dawn of Easter Monday, after completing his Holy Week duties (prioritizing prisoners and children) and -- one can only presume -- rebuking a member of the church who has been making himself loathed and infamous by violating or ignoring the teachings of the gospels...
It's not the first time in the last few years that I've thought "medieval chroniclers would be going wild over this," but medieval chroniclers would really be going wild over this.

I’ve never been thin in my whole life and I honest to god can’t recall a single era where obesity (BMI over 30 and don’t come at me with the “but athletic builds”; most women do not have those and BMI, however flawed, is an useful index for population statistics) was considered sexy. Aside from some cultures that have the feeding camps for brides, it’s reubens level of chubby at most that is considered attractive during the chubby friendly eras across the globe. It’s never *fat*.
Health (aside from the sexy consumption era) has always been the key component to attractiveness. Your skin, hair, teeth attest to it. Like sorry, excess weight is fine for a few years before it starts collecting its dues in joint pain, hormonal dysbalance, fertility, cardiovascular and pulmonary issues. That’s not “showing you can survive a harsh winter”.
I’m so sick of the way people misuse the concept of ‘but that was considered beautiful at the time.’ Humanity has a long history of visual representations of what we think is beautiful, and it’s pretty consistent. Eyebrow size and shape, hair colours and even body types (this is mostly just code for breast size) go in and out of fashion, but youth, symmetry, apparent good health and certain pleasing proportions are basically an underlying constant.

I recall this academic text i had to read ages ago (can’t recall the name and it was in Czech anyways). It was something about the body image issues and the author argued that the current obsession with thinness is completely unprecedented and very western. And I can’t stop laughing at the line that “in eastern cultures, plumpness has always been the preferred body type, especially in Korea.” Which… why? How? Sure, during the Tang dynasty, the preferred body type was a bit on the chubbier side, but I can’t recall a single depiction of a woman since then in the surviving asian artwork that would depict a single overweight woman. To argue that the current South Korean culture “values chubbiness over the unnatural thinness” is bordering on gaslighting.

WIP Tag Game
Rules: Tagger gives a word, then for each letter of that word you share an excerpt from your WIPs that start with that letter.
Tagged by the lovely @playlistashton. I haven't done a writing tag game in awhile, and this one was fun!
My word: SAID
From the OFCIR prequel, You Dressed Our Girl in a Lily White Shroud:
“She loved the garden,” Falia said, looking out the window. “I laid her there, under the hawthorn, because it was her favorite spot. She liked to sit outside with her dolls or her cat, reading stories or braiding grass. She would stay outside all day if I allowed.” “She had a cat?” He thought about Jaehaera, and how much she loved animals. How she often begged him and Helaena for a cat or a dog or a parrot. Perhaps his daughters would have been fast friends, had Mella been allowed a place at court.
From a super secret side AU in which Jace is an acknowledged bastard (and an only child), and Aegon is fostered on Driftmark:
Allard, Osfryd, and Kennet, the boys from Dragonstone who would one day join Jace as squires to knights of the garrison, just like their fathers, were all present. Maester Gerardys said that Allard was certainly a dragonseed, what with his pale hair and blue eyes that looked purple in certain lights, which meant that his father or grandfather or perhaps great-grandfather had been a Targaryen. When Jace had asked which one, Maester Gerardys said the boy had the look of Prince Aemon, though he was too young to have been the late prince’s son, so perhaps it was Allard's father who was a dragon's get. That made him a cousin of sorts, Jace supposed. When he had later asked Ser Robert if Allard’s mother might not have been a Targaryen, Ser Robert had threatened to clout him for speaking of his mother such, although Jace had not mentioned his mother at all.
An excerpt from the upcoming chapter of AKAB, which I promise I am currently editing:
“I will not beg him, Daeron.” Aegon’s voice was curt. “Baela is regent and she acted with my authority. If he believes he has been wronged he may present his case before the council, but I will not call for him. Aways, he believes himself the aggrieved party, and I will not have it. His command of Vhagar does not give him leave to do as he pleases, and it is nigh time he learned that lesson.”
And from the next chapter of OFCIR, which is currently in the drafting stage:
“Dragonstone. And we are already searching Dragonstone.” Aegon rubbed his brow, closing his eyes. There were some implications to what Corlys suggested, but he could not think beyond the throbbing in his head. Dragonstone. The Blackwater. Or overland? Who had taken his nephew, and where? His mind refused to provide any answers. He loosed a breath. “Tomorrow. Perhaps you are right, Corlys. Think on this problem for me. I hope that a new day will bring us…” What would the new day bring? All points in the future seemed as empty as a slate wiped clean.
No pressure tagging if you want to play! The word is BIRD @reyraereads @franzkafkagf @themoonofthesun @g0lightly @baellaggio @thisssees

Lady Baratheon's actions towards her daughters sseem so weird to me. Talk about a boy mom with this new young hot step dad. Why else would she do her daughters so dirty otherwise?
