Lastly, I have added the feature of automatic opening doors. I wanted a space that could be enjoyed all year round, the space would be cosy in the winter but would be uncomfortable hot in the summer as there was no type of ventilation. I have changed this so the three, 90 degree angled glass faces open automatically at certain times of the day during the warm months.

LED strip lighting that will be placed between the two glass faces with the tinted vinyl. I have chosen warm toned lighting rather than cool toned lighting to represent the warmth in drinking coffee.

Tinted vinyl that will be used to cover some of the glass faces.

I have also added tinted vinyl to some of the triangular glass faces in neutral brown tones to represent the colouring in coffee. The glass faces that have tinted vinyl will illuminate in the dark with strip LED’s placed between the two faces, this makes the site assessable any time of the day.

I have now removed the wooden flooring of the dome pod so it sits directly on the sand, this creates a more interactive space for the user. The sand has a similar texture to coffee ground which respond well with the ritual of drinking coffee.

I originally thought that I was going to have the floor of the space a neutral toned wood to relate to the colouring of coffee but after the pin up critique and how I should possibly take the approach to my space one way rather than two, I am going to remove the wooden flooring. This definitely give the space a non realistic, stylised approach. By having no flooring on the space and for it to be placed right onto the sand adds another texture to the space and a type of interaction for the users. Sand has a very similar texture to coffee grounds which fits with the ritual of drinking coffee perfectly.

Considering Materials. The glass dome structure itself will be made out of clear toughened glass, this is for multiple reasons. Firstly because toughened glass is a lot more practical and stronger than any other type of glass, it will be able to withstand through the elements like strong winds and rain. Toughened glass can also resist damage caused by excessive heat which is crucial for this space because of the sunlight that will be hitting it. Shown on the right is broken toughened glass from impact, if for any reason this was to happen at the site, it provides a major safety advantage compared with other types of glass that will break into large, sharp pieces. The reason for selecting ‘clear’ toughened glass is to avoid that greenish toned glass that would not fit well with the space nor the ritual of drinking coffee.

Pin Up Week 5 Critique
It was said that my space has two different approaches, a realistic approach and a non realistic, stylised approach. It was stated that they are contradicting each other so I am going to take one approach, a non realistic, stylised approach and continue developing my space. I was asked what exact materials are going to be used to build the space which is something I need to give more thought and research into. Lastly, it was suggested that I should think about airflow to make the space enjoyable and accessible through all seasons.
