The Life of St. Jean Baptiste De la Salle
It is most rewarding for an educator when he makes a difference in a child’s life, when he’s able to ignite curiosity and growth in his students. But as much as it can be rewarding, it can be as frustrating as teachers also deals with unruly behaviour and violence of a student. In addition, some communities also lack resources.
This is somewhat similar in the life of St. Jean Baptiste De La Salle. He established a school for the poor boys then he assumed the leadership of a small group of teachers. As an educator, St. La Salle was committed to even when some students were disengaged and co-educators were unruly. St. La Salle was committed to bring innovation. He changed the culture of teaching even if it costs him his life.
He was committed to a lifetime of ground-breaking teaching.
Influence of St. Jean Baptiste De La Salle
“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” - Henry Adams
Similar to the quote above, St. La Salle has affected our lives that reach far beyond the four walls of a classroom. If each and every one reflects during our time in school, we can name at least one teacher that instilled change in our lives. St. La Salle not only amended the way of teaching, he inspired us to become ethical.
Even in the smallest ways, St. La Salle has become a part of our everyday lives by simply developing our relationship with our own communities. As a student of the De La Salle University, it has further strengthened my beliefs in God and in doing what is morally good. This made me realized that something in this world is more significant than only be concerned with one’s personal desires; that we are in for something that is much bigger than ourselves. We have an obligation to better our communities. We have an obligation to serve those in need.
“Even when people screw things up, we should lead them and not condemn them.”
This is one of the most important lessons I learned from St. La Salle. It can be seen in the movie how Andre repetitively made blunders but St. La Salle proved that it is not right to choose to keep a record of wrong.
Second chances are deserved by people. It is essential in our lives to get another opportunity because we are not always ready when life hits us. So important to get another chance. But it does not mean that we can live carelessly. It just means that we have to know our boundaries.
Lessons
Being the in freight forwarding Industry, persuasions can come from a lot of things. Since we are “the travel agent for freight”, we buy a space wholesale from shipping lines and resell that to shippers at the highest possible price even when it is no longer within the market price. At a young age, such temptations can sometimes mislead you. There will be times when it will be very difficult to resist. But if the love for God will be prioritized, not anything can be resisted.
Similar to St. Jean Baptiste De La Salle, we desire to give a service that is pure and genuine. Even the littlest things that we do can somehow make a difference not only within the organization but to the community as well.
