something in foundation that makes me so crazy is that, sometimes, events that seem huge in one season have little to no impact in the next. I expected the mallows in s3 to be the descendants of hober and constant in s2, but uncle randu makes it clear that hober fathered lots of children, and his big climactic love scene with constant might have meant nothing at all to the plot in the long run. same with dawn XVIII running away to cloud dominion - HUGE in the overall arc of season 2 - but we didn't hear a whisper from their descendants (and probably never will now 🥲). dawn XXV mentioned XVIII's escape one time and that was it.

it's such a fun way to invert audience expectations and to reinforce the show's theme of psychohistory - and history itself - often not caring about or even remembering things that seemed absolutely earthshattering at the time. but it mattered! constant, dawn, and sareth's survival meant so much to both us and them, and the details being forgotten to time doesn't make their individual losses and triumphs any less important. incredible tv

hot take but I don’t WANT ao3 to allow the commercialization of fics OR create an algorithm. Commercializing is a grey area legally but Wattpad did both and it fundamentally ruined the site. One of the joys of fanfic is that it’s a hobby done out of love. There’s no incentive to appeal to a marketable audience. Theres no algorithm to game. There’s no pressure from advertisers to censor your work. There are no rules or standards that force you to do anything. I, personally, enjoy reading the insane, poorly written fanfics that someone crafted out of an authentic representation of themselves. I adore seeing new writers exploring the interiority of their minds, regardless of how embarrassing it is, without the threat of getting shadow banned. There are very, very few hobbies that have not been turned into an extrinsically motivated side-hustle or algorithmic click farm. I don’t want to open ao3 and see PG, polished, and inauthentic stories that were created to appeal to the largest common denominator. I want to see people who love what they do, regardless of how ‘acceptable’ it is. If you want 20 million ads and a marketing campaign, Wattpad still exists. Leave ao3 alone.

there is no amount of language learning that is useless. I think it obviously scales up in wonderfulness as you learn more, but even just being at the point where you can recognize what language is being spoken or written is still a more useful thing than not knowing that. it is lovely to say hi to people in their language! any attempt to learn is important. you don't get fluent overnight. and you don't have to get fluent overnight. more knowledge is better than none. it isn't just all or nothing.

0 - The Fool

The first card design for a Sinners (2025) inspired tarot deck I’m working on! I wanted to start with The Fool card, because it represents the beginning of the tarot’s journey, and I figured it represented Sammie from the very beginning of the movie fairly well!!

hello, thank you for the ask!! symbolism and artistic decision below the cut! :)

To begin, you may notice that there is no infinity symbol over Slim’s head… something that is quite unusual for a Magician tarot card. That is because, to me, music and musical instruments represent that idea of infinity and magic within the Sinners universe. Those who are shown to be talented musicians can quite literally summon the spirits of the dead (amongst other things), which I interpret as a sort of life into death into rebirth cycle.

On top of the piano is a glass of water, half-drunk, and a burning candle. These two symbols are a direct reference to the Raider Waite Magician card. I chose those specific elements because I think they represent a good amount of the spectrum of Delta Slim’s personality. Fire is very fast-acting, feisty, powerful, and sometimes explosive, while water is more slow-moving, thoughtful, but equally as powerful in the right scenario.

Along the board of the artwork, there are these leaves and vines. They are actually based on a real plant: artemisia, which is traditionally used in magickal rituals for cleansing, warding, and protection spells. It’s also used for divination occasionally!

In the top board sections, the leaves are wrapped around a harmonica and a train. The harmonica, while slightly covered by the leaves, is still mostly visible, and unobstructed. To me, similar to his piano, the harmonica represents Slim’s freedom. His freedom from slavery, his freedom to create, but at the same time, he is still living a little bit stuck in the past. The train station where we are first introduced to him is implied to be the same one where his friend was lynched.

To me, Delta Slim is an extremely tragic character because, despite the fact that he seems to know just how powerful his musical abilities are, he doesn’t seem to know that he has been quite literally playing his songs to his friend from beyond the veil. Hence why the view of the train is more obstructed, and there is no real end to it.

I included some more flower language in this card, as per usual. I chose roses because, amongst other things, their petals can be used to dispel negative energy, and their thorns are used in protection spells. However! The colors of the roses are a bit dull- that is on purpose! They are wilting, representing the slow fade of their protection and the imminent end of the magick…

The stabbed-through bird that appears in the boarder is a songbird, specifically a mockingbird. These kind of birds are known for their musical abilities, fiercely protective nature, and are often regarded as messengers or symbols of creative expression. Despite being stabbed through the heart, a usually fatal injury, the mocking birds still stand proudly, singing their songs with their heads held high.

The tree behind Slim is a blackthorn tree. They are usually associated with transformation, protection, resilience, and the cycle of life and death. They also have strong connections to traditional witchcraft and magick.

And finally, this one is a little bit more heavy handed than the other symbols, but the four suits of a traditional tarot deck appear in the four corners of the card. They represent Slim’s mastery over the four elements, as well as signaling the ultimate end of Slim’s journey- serving as almost a foil to Sammie who has just started out on his journey as the Fool.

Yeah I just can’t get into male characters. Every time one shows up he’s always just the Male Character to get brownie points and make an obvious epic maleboss so the writer can feel better about themselves. Not to mention they’re always getting in the way of my cute yuri ship. I just rather go focus on women instead. They’re always the more interesting and better written characters than the one random man they decided to shoehorn in.
