Suzanne Collins gripping my face with her hands: listen listen the first step to evil is dehumanisation, always, the second you start to see people as less than people no matter what they've done to you that's when you start heading down a path of selfish destruction and violence

Witness Chapter 19: The Lovers
Tumblr media
Posted LATE because my life is a shitshow. Anyway.
Summary: Frank and Karen learn the full extent of the damage from the school shooting, and discuss their next steps with Madani.
Excerpt:
“So, are we gonna talk about it?” he asked, putting his fork down carefully, suppressing the urge to slam it on the table. Violence solved a lot of problems, but it wasn’t going to solve Karen.
Karen froze in the middle of taking a bite, then slowly finished chewing, looking like a trapped deer. Frank felt a little guilty for putting her on the spot after all the shit she’d been through, but he really needed to know what was going on. He wanted her. He’d had her and now he didn’t want to let that go.
“Talk about what?” she asked, playing with her food. She didn’t look at him, keeping her attention on her bowl, but her cheeks got pink.
Frank looked around the room for inspiration, unsure of what to say next, but then decided, as usual, that the direct approach was best. “We had sex. A couple of times, Karen.” He looked at her, but she still didn’t look at him.
“Yeah,” she said quietly. He waited, but she didn’t say anything else.
“I just think that maybe we should talk about that.”

Witness Chapter 18: The Door
Tumblr media
Still with the no-new-pictures because I'm super busy, y'all. Sorry.
Anyway, in this chapter: While they wait to hear more about the aftermath of the shooting, Frank and Karen start putting the finishing touches on the panic room together.
Excerpt:
“Frank, you’ve put a lot of thought into this. I think you’re paranoid, but I do appreciate it. I hope you know that.”
Frank blinked, unsure what to do with her gratitude. He decided to keep it casual. “Well, going into witness protection with you only makes sense if I can actually protect you. That Punisher shit is great, but it’s a solo gig, you know? If shit hits the fan, I want you to be somewhere safe so I can do what needs doing without having to worry about you.”
“Frank…” She sounded like she was about to scold him like one of her students. He knew she didn’t like when he had to kill people, but when it came to her safety, he would not hesitate, and he needed her to understand that.
“I’m not going to argue about this, Karen.” He stopped at the bottom of the basement steps and looked at her still on the stairs. “This room, this plan, it’s the point of all of this. If they come for you, I need you in that room and safe so I can take care of the threat.”

Witness Chapter 17: The Ramifications
Tumblr media
I'm out of photos, so this has nothing to do with the plot of the chapter. Sorry.
Anyway. Remember comments are my lifeblood. I love you all.
Summary: Madani arrives to discuss next steps with Frank and Karen.
“Oh my god,” Madani said softly, but Karen was on a roll now, stiff with intensity and righteous emotions.
“[The shooter] was prepared to kill us all, and it was only me talking to him that got him to change course. So yeah, I took a risk, but it was take a risk or guaranteed death, and I chose risk.”
She finished talking, and Frank could feel the anger and fear coming off of her. He was glad to see her fired up. When she shut down is when he got scared for her. He sipped his coffee and looked at Madani: it was her move.
“Well, now that your image is on national news, it might be harder to protect you.”
“That ‘image’ is grainy and distant, and I’m not sure I need protecting,” Karen began, but Madani held up a hand.
“Wilson Fisk is scheduled to get out of prison next week.”
“What?” Karen asked. Frank felt his whole body tense. That asshole got to walk free? He’d never trusted the justice system, and shit like this was why.
“Yeah,” Madani confirmed. “He’s being released early on parole for ‘good behavior.’ I’m sure his lawyers and some money pulled a lot of strings for him, but regardless of how it happened, he’s going to be a free man, since I assume his parole will be a joke. So, like I said, it’s going to be harder to protect you. The shield of witness protection is anonymity, and you may have just lost it.”

Witness Chapter 16: The Shift
Tumblr media
Yeah, it happens.
“Frank, your heart is racing.” She lifted her head and looked at him as she spoke.
“Yeah, well, I just almost shot you, which is the opposite of what I want to be doing.”
Karen shifted her body closer to his, until they were in full contact. Frank barely registered it, he was still so preoccupied with the vision of her with her hands up at the other end of his pistol.
“What do you want to be doing, Frank?” she asked, and as soon as the words left her mouth, he knew he was in trouble. From the look on her now-fearless face, there was a right answer and a wrong answer to that question, and he was afraid of both. He licked his lips and swallowed, looking over her head at the wall. Her eyes were too intense.
“I just wanna keep you safe, Karen.”
“Frank, look at me.” Her voice was calm, quiet, and compelling.
He looked.
“You’re important to me, too.” Then she leaned forward and kissed him.

Witness Chapter 15: The Adversary
Tumblr media
I'm running out of pictures, y'all.
Anyway, Enter Wilson Fisk, stage right. It had to happen. But mostly there's some Kastle angsty fluff:
She shivered, and Frank’s arm tightened around her. She closed her eyes and imagined that this was a regular occurrence, that they snuggled all the time, that they shared their bodies with each other. These were things she only allowed herself to imagine at night, after she went to bed alone, thinking about him just a thin wall away from her. But here he was behind her, holding her like a lover, and for a moment she just let herself feel that.
“Hey,” he said into her hair. She jumped slightly, surprised that he was awake and that he knew she was awake. She turned in the bed to face him, under his arm, and he didn’t move it. They lay there, their noses inches apart. It made her heart ache for everything she didn’t have.
“Hey, yourself,” she replied. They were both speaking quietly into the twilight of the room. She looked in his eyes for any sign that he reciprocated what she felt for him. There was a quiet pain there, one that would never go away.
She couldn’t compete with a dead family. She only hoped that some day he’d be able to move on.

Witness Chapter 14: The Fragile
Tumblr media
I've missed some tumblr posts, friends, because I've been traveling and also I've been tired. Mea culpa. I have still gotten the chapters up on time, however. We've had spring break. We've had a school shooting. And now we have Frank Castle being so gentle...I hope you read and enjoy.
Excerpt:
However, by the time they got back to the house, she was shaking again, and there was a dullness in her eyes. Frank was alarmed. She hadn’t been like this when Lewis had almost killed her with his suicide bomb, nor in the diner when he had killed all of those men in front of her. Something was different about this time, and Frank knew what it was. She’d been close to violence before, but she’d never seen innocent children die.
Frank remembered that feeling, of walking through a ruined Afghani village and seeing the mangled remains of toddlers. Nobody should have to see that, but the difference was that he had been in a war zone, where such things were, if not common, at least more likely. Karen had been in an elementary school during peacetime. She hadn’t been prepared. She needed him to take care of her now.

Witness Chapter 11: The Argument
Tumblr media
Are these annoying? I don't know tumblr etiquette. Anyway, I'm on a regular posting schedule now, so I'll probably start forgetting to make these posts. If you're reading, I hope you'll keep reading anyway.
Summary: Karen has a hard day at work, then decides she's a little done with Frank's bullshit.
Excerpt:
She was in her pajamas eating ice cream on the couch when Frank finally got home. He came in the back door of the house, probably because he’d had to park outside since his parking spot was full of insulation.
“Hey, Frank,” she called out.
“Hey, Karen.” He sounded distracted.
“I left some dinner on the stove for you,” she said. Maybe he’d eat it, maybe he wouldn’t. Leftovers wouldn’t hurt either of them.
“Thanks,” he said. She heard his boots thump on the floor, then he went off into the kitchen. A couple of minutes later she heard the microwave beep, and then he returned to the living room, carrying a bowl full of stir fry.
“Thanks for cooking,” he said as he sat in the armchair. He shoveled a bite into his mouth, chewed once, then opened his mouth a little, breathing around food that was clearly too hot.
“So, when are you going to be done with the spare room?” she asked carefully.
Frank froze, clearly unprepared for the question, but then he went back to chewing. He swallowed, stabbing at his bowl to prepare his next bite.
“I still have two rounds of insulation and some wiring to do, then I have to hang new drywall and paint it. Maybe three weeks?”
“Frank, you’ve been working on this for months. What are you building in there? Why all the insulation?”
“You’re the investigative reporter, you haven’t figured it out yet?” He gave her a sidelong look with a crooked smile.

Witness Chapter 10: The Targets
Tumblr media
I've finished it!!! Regular posting schedule, here we come. Thanks to everyone who is donating neurotransmitters to the cause, I truly appreciate you.
Summary: Frank coaches Karen through shooting different guns. It goes...well, you'll see.
Excerpt:
“My goodness, Frank, why do we need all these guns?” she asked as she carefully followed him down the steps from the back porch. “When I said you’d put an arsenal in my house, I didn’t think I was serious.”
“I hope we don’t need them, but I figure I’d rather have them and not need them than need them and not have them. Besides, if I really wanted an arsenal, I’d have grenades and maybe a rocket launcher.”
“Well, sure, I guess when you put it that way,” Karen said, rolling her eyes.
“Look, don’t get sarcastic with me,” he chided, but there was no heat in it. “You wanted to know, now you know.”

so, making one of my last gifsets i noticed cassian’s face in this scene (not for the first time but i looked even closer this time) — and you can actually pinpoint the exact moment he realises they won’t make it. in the second gif you can see him squint just a little bit, focusing on the horizon, and then his face opens up.
— and in the third gif he’s taking a breath (jyn is visibly swallowing as well) and is furrowing his brows, seemingly accepting his fate.
it’s so small and just a tiny shift in his features but you can actually see his realisation that they’re doomed, that they will die — here, on this beach, together.
it breaks my heart.

Witness Chapter 9: The Guns
Tumblr media
I'm so almost done with this, and will be moving on to a regular posting schedule very soon. Like, by next week. I promise.
Excerpt:
Two days later he was reading a book in bed. It was late, and he was starting to think about putting in a bookmark and calling it a night, when there was a firm knock on his door and it opened violently without further warning.
“Frank, what the fuck is this?” Karen demanded.
He looked up at her standing in his doorway, then let his gaze drift downward, taking in her white tank top and fuzzy grey pajama pants before noticing the gun in her right hand.
“That is a Glock 22.”
“I know it’s a Glock, Frank, I can read the side of the gun. I’m just wondering why the hell it was in a holster attached to the bottom of my nightstand.”
