i've had many, many ships over the years that i've thought about doing a silver springs video for but it didn't feel right until this one, so i was very excited to work on this. editing it made me craaazyyy. this song is crazy, guys.

i wanted to leave out my usual soundbites and nat sound to let the song speak for itself bc it's so beautiful imo, and also because stevie nicks says everything that needs to be said. but i tried to suggest dialogue by pairing lyrics with scenes where WE know what they're saying ("don't say that she's pretty" over sid telling eugene he slept with gwen and is marrying mary, or "can you tell me, was it worth it?" over eugene asking how they ended up there) to still tie the lyrics to that dialogue without having to actually include it and mar the audio of the song.

i also really challenged myself to jump around in this video. i feel like my last two videos have been very chronological so i actively avoided that...except for the kind of corny backwards supercut at the very end. which i wanted to do to 1) illustrate the "time cast a spell on you" lyric the same way the quick cuts of sid did earlier (which i thought were really fun after that loooong shot of gene. the song is gentle until it's not and i tried to match that with my cuts‚ i.e. less rigid cutting to the beat earlier in the song and then really driving‚ uniform cuts by the end); 2) show that this kind of push and pull is a loop that they'll continue to go through for the rest of their lives.....AUGH; and 3) get us back visually to that jib shot of them walking in the field.

i wanted to end on that so i could bookend the video with shots of nature to set the scene and match the vibe of the song (TO ME). those first shots are meant to show the beauty of nature but with the hint of danger: gene hunting‚ marching through guadalcanal‚ etc. (sublime in the edmund burke Romantic sense‚ if you want to get art crit freaky with it, a term that i think applies VERY WELL to the pacific in general)

also. i did not even do 17 million match cuts in this video on purpose, but i am who i am. i just wanted a natural way to tie scenes together/move the viewer along since i WAS jumping around a lot instead of going chronologically. so with all that jumping around i find it makes a video more cohesive (coherent?) to 1) include some sort of element that ties two disparate scenes together visually, not just narratively; and 2) give the eye less movement to track. shout out mad max fury road <3
