Tattoos: Hindu scripture over a long scar on his upper right arm – while on a research hike in India, he fell off a cliff and a sharp rock tore through his arm. He was airlifted to a hospital and got stiches and was fine after a few days, but damn did that day not haunt him. He got the tattoo a year later, and it is a section from an ancient text he was researching when he fell.

Clothing Style: professor meets…. teenager? That’s kind of the only way to describe it, he dons the suit jackets and black slacks, but can’t seem to feel like himself with a collared shirt buttoned up to his neck. He prefers plain colored tees underneath the jacket, and tennis shoes to business shoes. His weekend look isn’t much different, just remove the jacket.

Defining Features: shaggy, curly hair and unkempt facial hair – AJ used to be clean cut and shaven around his mom, but now he doesn’t have anyone nagging him about his looks. So he prefers the long hair and beard – secretly he loves it because it makes him feel like Indiana Jones – but Indian. 

BIO

AJ was born in Mumbai, but has very few memories of his childhood life in India. He remembers moments, like waddling through a marketplace with his mother, or riding on a train to see his grandmother, but that’s mostly fading memories.

He’s an only child, and his family moved to New York when he was four to ‘find a better life’. New York was not much better, but they found solace in an upstate NY community of Indian immigrants.

AJ’s dad worked as a subway technician, and his mother found work at a bakery. AJ often had sweets waiting for him when he got home from school, and hides his middle school pictures from potential girlfriends for a reason – he gained about 20 pounds that first year she worked there.

Though he doesn’t remember much about living in Mumbai, he was always fascinated with India. Most of it came from watching Indiana Jones when he was a kid. He thought the character was India Jones - fighting his way through the world with some crazy Indian knowledge. He realized later in life that this was not the case, but the idea of uncovering history (while fighting bad guys) was exciting.

AJ went to Cambridge University as a history major, and like any history major, had two possible career paths - research, or education. Obviously, he chose research, like his childhood hero Indiana Jones, and went off to Mumbai.
