Modern Day Expression of Spiritual Being

The deepest values and meanings people live by are the focus of modern spirituality. The belief of an ultimate or an alleged immaterial truth is also accepted. It foresees an internal journey that enables a person to explore the essence of his or her being. Examples of this are the celebration of Christmas and New Year. Here in the Philippines, Filipinos likes to spend Christmas for as long as possible than any other countries. Christmas decors are already set in September. Parols are hanging outside or inside in every houses. Christmas trees are already standing. Christmas songs are playing in every radios. And children are busy caroling every night. The formal celebration starts on 16 on December where many people go to the first early mass and the last mass is on Christmas eve. Here in our country which is the Philippines the early mass is held before Christmas also known as the Mesa de Gallo or “ Simbang Gabi” in Filipino. Many people says that when you complete the 9 “Simbang Gabi” all your desires or wishes will come true. As one of the Filipinos, I also believe that Christmas day is a very special day because it is when the Lord Jesus Christ is born. Which should be celebrated exceptionally. Christmas day is also the time where we get go bond with our loved ones. In New Year we have this tradition to wear polka dots, jumping, media noche and some variety of round shaped fruits. Wearing polka dots to guarantee wealth in the coming New Year. Jumping high when the clock strikes at 12 can help the small ones to grow taller. Filipinos celebration of New Year will not be complete without media noche. A variety of round fruits, for some it should be 13 or 14 kinds of fruits but it doesn’t really matter as long as we have round fruits on our table. I remember last New Year, my siblings and I waited and then joined the countdown on television, my father was sleeping peacefully that time and when it was already 12 I started screaming “Happy New Year! Happy New Year! Happy New Year everyone!” while jumping. My father get up shocked he said, “What’s wrong? What happen to you? Why are you screaming?” I said, “It’s already New Year, Pa. Happy New Year!”. After how many seconds realization hits him, he smiled and greeted us back. He then called my mother on messenger and also greeted her. Me and my siblings banged pots and pans, shouted at the top of our lungs, honked the horn, and generally became mad lunatics for a few minutes. Fireworks are shining brightly above the sky. Afterwards, my father slices the watermelon so we can eat it. Holidays are always a pleasure to me, not only because I get off from school, but more importantly, because I get to be with my family. Celebrations like Christmas and New Year helps me realize to bond and cherish every moment that I’ve spent with my family not just in special occasions but also in our everyday lives because when they already have their own families we wouldn’t be with them any time we want.
