Hayakawa family, 8AM

imagine a world where the infinity demon encounter happens before that scene with Makima where she officially gives Denji the mission to defeat the gun devil. finding the infinity demon is just Aki's assignment that day, and the gun devil flesh hasn't been explained to Denji yet. this also means that when Denji meets Himeno, and she offers him a kiss if he does good work, Denji is immediately on board and is also a bit more interested in Himeno. I mean, he's just coming off of the unsatisfying boob touch experience with Power, and Makima hasn't propositioned him yet, so his devotion is still a slight bit more undedicated.

so when they get trapped in the hotel, Denji picks up a bit more on Aki and Himeno being kinda close... and what's that about? Denji's curious. Denji wants to know more. and when the boredom sets in, he ends up pestering Aki about it. what is she to him? have they kissed? have they... you know... done it?

Aki is mostly just kind of reluctant to share details... all he really wants to do is focus on finding a way out of this place. and in truth, no, things haven't really gone that far with Himeno... she's been physically affectionate to him on occasion, but there's a sort of distance that she maintains. Aki might not be able to explicitly verbalize this vibe, but it's as though she wants to do something with him flippantly, to prove it wouldn't mean anything... but it would mean something. so she can't. she knows she'd actually fuck up her emotions that way. so they haven't really done anything, and it's been this way for a while... she just plays chicken with their bond, like she's fighting between the urge to care about him completely, and the urge to put a buffer of indifference between them so the loss won't hurt as much if...

...

but Denji wouldn't understand all that. or he might... but Aki probably couldn't explain all of what he's intuiting in the first place. he just knows that the affection between himself and Himeno feels a bit delicate, and Denji is a bull in a china shop. and more importantly, Himeno seems to think Denji's cute, but its clear to Aki that the only way she'd get close to Denji, is if he really means that little to her.

so Aki has the unenviable task of trying to temper Denji's excitement over maybe getting a kiss in his future, while also trying not to look defensive, as though he and Himeno are actually together. Aki once again probably hasn't really verbalized this thought to himself yet, but Denji makes him uneasy because he's so gullible. and at one point maybe Aki gets frustrated and points out that Denji shouldn't really care about getting a kiss from Himeno specifically. she certainly won't think it's anything special to her, but Denji doesn't even know her well enough to understand that. he clearly doesn't even care who does it... couldn't he just ask anyone?

and there may have been a subconscious idea starting to form around that statement... but none of it has a chance to matter before things kick off with the infinity demon. everything goes the same, but Aki jumping in to protect Denji from Kobeni feels a bit more personal now.

and then the aftermath happens too. the work mixer. that god awful kiss. and Denji still hasn't heard Makima's proposal yet, so in his mind he's purely 0 for 2 when it comes to attempted intimacy.

later on, he ends up moping around Aki's apartment... Power got fed up with that in record time and went out for a bit, so it's just him and Aki. and Aki actually doesn't want to be like "I told you so" but this is sort of what he was worried about... Denji got his hopes up, and then they got viscerally knocked back down again. he settles on telling Denji that he's sorry... that kiss did go way worse than he ever could've imagined, but even past that... Himeno wasn't really invested in this the way Denji was.

Denji still seems dejected though, so Aki decides, on impulse, to try and rectify the situation a little. so he leans into Denji's space and kisses him properly.

it doesn't last very long... and it's nothing like what Himeno had even started to do. it's a lot more chaste... no tongue, just the sentimental press of his lips, soft and warm. it's... sweet. and when Aki pulls away, his face is so plain and earnest as he tells Denji that that's what it's supposed to be like.

Denji feels his face and neck burning, but now that he knows this is possible... I mean, it's not fair, is it? Aki caught him off guard, he was barely paying attention... show him again? he noses forward a bit and Aki kind of understands why Makima compares Denji to a dog. his unsubtly eager body language gives away everything about what he wants, and Aki finds himself leaning in again.

their lips connect, and it's immediately different this time. now that Denji knows what's happening, he's more participatory. he nudges forward, blindly seeking more, and the kiss deepens before Aki even has a chance to think. and no, Denji doesn't know how to use his tongue, or how to fit their mouths together right, but somehow it feels good anyway? Denji is enthusiastic, and Aki can tell he's starting to get it after a moment. Denji is beginning to repeat whatever he's noticing he likes, and Aki is trying his best to respond, tipping his head for a better angle, and meeting his movements halfway. Aki doesn't even know when Denji ended up practically in his lap, but Denji eventually presses forward enough that Aki falls back on his elbows, and that's how they end up... out of breath and crowded into each other's space.

so basically, Aki makes up for Denji's horrible first kiss with Himeno, by giving him a much better second kiss... and third. possibly more. they lose track eventually.

i love aki bc he truly is only seen as the normal one bc he is surrounded by freaks. like in any normal social setting aki is a fucking weird loser. he fist fought a 16 year old in an alley bc the kid didnt care about his job enough. he stuck gum on a womans back and extensively bragged about how much he owned her. the only thing he thinks or talks about is a half-cooked vengeance plot thats been brewing in his underdeveloped brain for like a decade. this man is a mess. he is a freak hiding in a herd of other freaks to camouflage himself.
