jane would’ve never not gone to college. despite her mostly following in her father’s plan for her, she still had more freedom at college than she ever did at home. the difference was slight but jane would take having to major in something she didn’t like over living with her father any day. “i’m a nursing major,” she stated. “but i’m trying to switch to something else.” she couldn’t tell if he really wanted to know, but she had just went with hoping that he did. “maybe they thought you’d like it. you should go ask for another recommendation and maybe they’ll give you something you like better.”
“what’s wrong with nursing?” jesse questioned, head tilting to the side. for once he took a small interest in the conversation, employing his knack to dig into people’s business. “after this recommendation i don’t think i’ll be asking for them for another anytime soon,” jesse remarked, closing the book and setting it on the table beside him. “do you have any novels that you think could be worthwhile for me to read?” if he was going to continue to talk to the stranger, he was at least going to try to get something out of the situation.

in a dream world she wouldn’t be at college either. she would’ve been playing soccer with the united states women’s national soccer team and been the godmother of alex morgan’s future baby. as much as she wanted to complain, at least she was still playing soccer. st. tommy’s didn’t have a world renowned soccer team but they were good enough for monday. at least at soccer practice she didn’t have to worry about hitting those who weren’t used to it. she started digging through her bag, desperately trying to find tissues for the girl. “here you go, i’m so so sorry,” she said as she handed the pocket sized pack of tissues to the other girl. “do you want me to find you some ice?” she asked, feeling incredibly guilty.
“no, you’re fine. we were both kind of airheads in the moment. we’re even,” she assured the seemingly fifteen year old stranger. phoenix quickly took the tissues with a mumbled “thanks” and used them to clean up the blood she couldn’t instantly stop. “i work at health services. i can get some. you can come if you want,” phoenix offered, head still tilted back as she rummaged through her oversized sweatshirt pocket for her lanyard and keys.

anyone with eyes could see that reid was an outsider. he hadn’t even planned on going to college, but his feet had taken him to tommy’s the night he’d run, and he never went back. it was a good place for business, all things considered, as long as he stayed in the room. he… didn’t do that often. reid had assessed what hours the area was most empty, using those as prime time to explore and possibly break his fucking neck jumping from campus statues. now, though, he’d made the grave mistake of locking himself out right as activity picked up, an ounce of something he did not want to get caught with shoved into his backpack “hello, fellow college student.” he called nervously to the first person that made the terrifying decision to get closer to him.
phoenix wasn’t expecting to se an actual... child on her way to class. she forced herself to remember if she put her contacts in this morning or if there was just... someone so young looking twenty feet away from her. phoenix approached them slowly, frankly confused as fuck. “you’re like... twelve. hello?” she questioned, approaching the toddler with her arms crossed. “are you like... here to see your sibling or something? get lost during a field trip?” phoenix first questioned, eyebrows furrowed. after a moment, her eyebrows slowly raised, mouth falling agape at the realization of another possibility. “or... are you a child genius? like you’re here studying astrophysics or some brainy shit?”

college had been a huge transition for her. she had been accepted to st. thomas through early admission and she simply had not been ready to leave home just yet. however the college’s indoor soccer field had grown to be a second home to her. still there were times when the walk from her dorm room to the sports complex wasn’t worth it. monday stood outside the library, kicking a soccer ball against the walls of the building, trying to relax after her classes. she had expected to just get a few good kicks in before leaving. she did not expect for the soccer ball to ricochet off the wall and nearly hit a person before she could catch it. she gasped before running over to them (and more importantly, her ball). “i’m so sorry,” she started, grabbing her ball. “i didn’t think i would miss that. are you okay?”
if it were phoenix’s choice, she wouldn’t be at college. she was frankly only here because her dad wanted her to amount to something, even though phoenix was convinced her dedication to the moon and ability to put eighteen grapes in her mouth was enough. the phenomenon consistently filled her head. no, no, not hating college, just how many grapes she could fit in her mouth. maybe she could go for nineteen next week. phoenix was so focused on the task that she hardly noticed the soccer ball that slammed her right in the face. mother moon, the fuck? “yeah, you were pretty far off. no offense,” phoenix groaned, head tilting back as she pinched her near blood gushing nose. “you got some tissues or something?”

𝐑𝐈𝐕𝐄𝐑 𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐃 𝐖𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐇𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐂 in other’s lives . if he had the chance to make someone angry or make someone cry , he always took it . so , when he was met with a disgusted look from annie , his heart leapt in excitement . “ the king ? is that what people are calling me nowadays ? how fitting . " it was too damn easy for river to slip into the personality of the COCKIEST bastard on campus . in fact , he almost found it easier to slip into that role than to figure out his own real personality . especially after so many years of repressing his true personality to defend himself . " very bold of you to assume that any of my music is shit . you probably listen to the shit they play at urban outfitters and think you’re special because of it . you know , tame impala and shit like that . " river’s lips held that smug , shit - eating grin as he tucked his hands into the front pocket of his hoodie .
after aggressively wiping off her sleeve a few too many times, annie crossed her arms and swore to herself that she wouldn’t make physical contact with the scum ever again. “don’t flatter yourself. calling you that high of a title is probably the only way to get your attention at this point,” annie remarked, rolling her eyes. maybe the reason she hated river so much was because he reminded her of her own shit ass boyfriend, but she wouldn’t dare psychoanalyze herself that much when river was involved in the issue. she refused to spend to spend a single minute thinking about river’s existence. frankly, it sickened her. annie thought she might just puke all over his ugly ass shoes. “urban outfitters shit? sure, genius. you know me so fucking well,” she responded sarcastically, not even wanting to correct him on the subject. annie didn’t want river to know a single thing about her. it was frankly a crime that he could even perceive her existence. “well what are you listening to? dababy?” lucky guess. maybe she knew his type too well.

𝐀𝐔𝐆𝐔𝐒𝐓𝐔𝐒 𝐅𝐄𝐋𝐓 𝐋𝐈𝐊𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐈𝐆𝐆𝐄𝐒𝐓 idiot in the WORLD at the moment . leaving his things in all kinds of places by accident was typically seen as a cute & quirky trait that friends & family teased him for . and that was great & all ! until it was one of his all - time favorite books that he had misplaced . he had already checked in all the usual places & it was nowhere to be found . which is exactly why gus was leaving his favorite tea place with a frown on his face . in a final attempt at locating his book , he tapped on the shoulder of someone also leaving the tea shop . " hey , you wouldn’t have happened to see a copy of anne carson’s autobiography of red laying around anywhere maybe ? with the name ‘ augustus lockhart ' on the inside in god awful handwriting ? "
as soon as she felt a finger touch her shoulder, phoenix whipped the fuck around. for a minute she had no idea what the stranger was on about, but it quickly registered in her head, and the girl whipped the book out of her backpack in no time. “this old thing?” phoenix questioned, eyebrows furrowed as she held up the book. instead of instantly handing it back to the stranger, she thumbed through the pages before looking back up at him. “looks like sort of a snooze fest... no offense.” phoenix paused for a moment, questioning if she should hit the stranger with the cold hard truth (if saying that the stranger’s book sucked wasn’t any harsher). “i also like... sat on it. like fully... my ass was on that. you must’ve left it on the seat or something. you sure you want it back?” she questioned, making sure she made strong eye contact as she brought up the subject.

st. tommy’s was in jane’s blood. both her parents went to st. tommy’s, her paternal grandparents went to st. tommy’s, and her great grandfather went st. tommy’s. it was ingrained in her to love the prestigious school. for as long as she could remember she knew she would end up here. the man’s reaction shocked her. most people at the school knew her and had at least a slightly warmer reaction to her. “no, my major doesn’t really have any need for polls.” jane wasn’t really used to people not being incredibly kind towards her. “is that a good book?” she gestured to his lap, attempting to make small talk.
in turn, jesse’s family attended ivy leagues and oxford. if his current rut hadn’t lead him to impulsively enroll in college, he would’ve been one of the first of his family members to skip out on college entirely. st. tommy’s was still a step down from what his family would’ve expected of their son, but none of them were alive to judge his decision anyways. “what is it then?” he questioned, only continuing the conversation because the stranger did. “not really. i asked one of the librarians for a recommendation. i didn’t expect that she’d have such poor taste.”

brunette hair rested upon her shoulders as she smiled, her eyes admiring the beauty of the campus sprinkled with snow. she clung a textbook to her chest in an attempt to keep it dry from the snow. she could not stand what pages felt like after they had been ruined by moisture. she soon found warmth in one the decade old campus buildings. usually she would’ve complained about it being too warm but she now welcomed the much too hot building with open arms. she was stripping off her hat and gloves when she saw a familiar face. “hey!” she called out, getting their attention. “do you have class in here or are you just avoiding the snow?” she asked, a soft smile directed at them.
truthfully, jesse had only applied to st. tommy’s to try to fill the parent filled hole in his heart. despite his intelligence, he had no motivation to learn or indulge in the typical college life. jesse was simply here to fill time until he found some sort of new purpose to carry him through life. “hello...?” he half questioned, eyebrows furrowing at the sight of the stranger. jesse didn’t entirely understand why others thought it was appropriate to approach strangers in public. “one or the other,” jesse replied mindlessly, toying with a page from the book that rested on his lap. “are you taking some sort of poll?”

st. tommy’s wasn’t particularly known for being a party school. in fact, it prided itself on it’s image of civility and propriety. wren bingham was neither of those things. and even with his straight edge nature, he had an uncanny ability to turn any event he stumbled into ( usually with stacks of pizza in hand ) , into an absolute shit fest. needless to say, he was proud of his talents. in the kitchen of some poor college parent’s house, wren leaned against the counter, admiring his handy work, a loud crash in the distance. his grin twisted in the corners, as he leaned over to the person next to him, “gotta say, they’ve got some nice shit in here,” he mused, taking a sip from his solo cup.
parties weren’t entirely zaylie’s scene, but she could never turn down the chance to dance with a group of strangers. she’d gone a little too hard to a song that she only knew from tik tok and quickly rushed to the kitchen to find something to help stop the head banging induced dizziness. she weaved through the kitchen crowd with excitement at the sight of a familiar figure. zaylie was practically standing on her tip toes to peak into the cabinet, standing as tall as she could and resting her elbow on wren’s shoulder for balance. “what kind of stuff? they got any tequila? how about any fanta?” she questioned, eyebrows raising as she looked at wren.

on top of running late to class, annie had the shittiest of mornings and felt like a wishbone after thanksgiving day. maybe she didn’t entirely have an excuse considering all of her mornings were shitty, but it nonetheless stopped her from acting like the world was ending. she knew she should have been looking in front of her, but she was too preoccupied with scrolling through her contacts in attempts to find someone to watch her younger sibling. upon slamming into river, she had to practically stop herself from dry heaving. the sight of the creature was enough to sicken her, let alone the sweat that even the smell of rotting leaves couldn’t mask. “oh, i’m fucking sorry,” she snapped. “i didn’t realize the king needed the whole fucking sidewalk.” annie paused for a minute before she realized that she had in fact touched river, the seemingly smelliest man in the world. she dramatically wiped off the sleeve of her jacket with her hand, fearful that some of his toxic sweat had touched it. “too busy listening to your shit music to even realize there was another person right in front of you?”

not many people visited the small apartment jane had learned to call her home. her roommates would drag their boyfriends in every once in a while but the apartment had garnered a reputation for being quiet, unlike the apartments surrounding hers. people suggested to her all the time that she should throw a party but that simply didn’t sound fun to jane. she was in college to further her education, not to get wasted to the point she couldn’t leave her bed the next day. it almost took her by surprise when there was a knock on the door. her roommates weren’t home so surely it couldn’t be meant for her, right? she usually met up with her friends at their apartments, not hers, and she knew they wouldn’t visit the dalton apartment. jane slipped her fuzzy slippers on to help her brace the october breeze once the door was open and her living room was exposed to the cold. she opened the door and it took her a moment to register who was standing on the other side of the door. “cade?” she asked, stepping outside. “what are you doing here?”
while the running had kept cade just warm enough, he instantly started to feel the cold as he stood in front of her door. instead of crossing his arms to use body heat, his arms simply rested by his sides. cade’s fingers peaked out of his knit sweater sleeves to mindlessly play with loose strings. “hi… jane,” he started, offering her the smallest smile he could manage in his distressed state. it took him a moment to collect any sort of thought - any sort of explanation that wouldn’t embarrass the shit out of him. “i didn’t know where else to go… i’m sorry.” cade let out a small yet twisted laugh, eyes drifting to his shoes before they wearily met jane’s. while he could feel tears still falling down his cheeks, he was thankful that he wasn’t sobbing like before. “i sort of messed… something up and… i just – sort of ended up here,” cade explained, words broken up by hiccups from previously sobbing. “i can leave if you want.”

he hated this fucking time of the year ; the weather hadn’t bucked up enough just yet to cover the ground with snow, but he still had to run with his eyes focused on the ground in fear of slipping on patches of dry ice. zephyr hadn’t even noticed that he was near someone, let alone river. “didn’t know you were going to be so fucking grumpy today,” zephyr greeted with a small laugh. after their shoulders collided, he wrapped his arm around river and patted his friend’s shoulder twice before letting go. “the cold is a bitch and you smell... lovely,” he added, stating the last part quite sarcastically.

to jane / from cade
cade functioned on a fluctuating wave of self despair and confidence. the latter rarely appeared and when it did, cade felt over the moon. he could do just about anything he put his mind to, and today it meant giving a compliment to a pretty girl that he’d always thought was cute as he passed her in the quad. even in the eyes of someone who adored her so much, cade knew that she thrived off of validation from others and confirmation that she was the top dog. he should have known that she wouldn’t care about his presence, let alone the compliment he wanted to give her, but he was too elated to care. cade could hardly utter out the compliment before he was snapped at. he tried his hardest to recover and patch up the situation, but the boy only made it worse. with a simple hand movement, the pretty girl shooed him from the area and he practically sprinted with tears running down his face. cade could feel his legs shaking and his head starting to lighten from sudden and hard sobs. he had no idea where he was going, but ended up in one of the housing parts of campus. cade knew of nobody who lived there. well, he knew jane, but he hadn’t talked to her since high school. at the point of physical collapse, cade figured that turning to her was his best shot. he tried to collect himself somewhat before knocking on her door.
