magic au airi misc. thoughts but under a readmore because it contains spoilers for magic au

so like what if she had antlers that were like, tree branches but they looked like antlers (purely for my own self-indulgence)

i thought this up a while ago but i could never figure out a why for it existing that i was really satisfied with, though it was a thought i played with occasionally because it was just fun to think about

my original idea was that it was a cosmetic thing or something. something like haruka cast a concealment spell on airi when minori first appeared at the start of the story which removed the antlers from sight to not scare minori with something strange like that. but i didn't really like that idea too much

then i had a shower thoughts moment and i was like, well, what if it's like an age thing and they grow in gradually some time after the ending of the fic

i like that idea better. it also fits into a snippet i wrote which isn't really focused on the antlers at all but they are mentioned to exist just so i could play with the airi antlers idea. the snippet is about airi wedding planning, so if it was like an older age forest spirit thing then it would check out because wedding planning implies that she's gotten older

i still do like the idea of airi or haruka assuming that minori will find the antlers scary or intimidating and warning her about them but minori just thinks that they make airi look even more pretty (and she likes kissing them)

the antlers are basically tree branches so perhaps the occasional stray leaf can be found on them. presumably the wood would also be a decently powerful magic ingredient but since they grow pretty slowly and are like, proportional to the size of airi's head you probably couldn't make a full-size staff out of them.

a related thought was that of haruka occasionally teasing airi that because she is a plant, she wants to see if she can snap off parts of her and plant those and grow a new airi, and this is in fact vaguely unsettling to airi because she does not actually know if haruka is joking or not (she's joking)

another misc. airi thought that i had was related to her parents

i thought once about how airi seems to have inherited a lot from her mom like forest spirit magic and some forest spirit traits, but i never really touched on what she gets from her dad like, inheritance-wise. the story like briefly addresses that he taught her woodworking and raised her though

i thought that airi probably inherited her pink hair from her dad because her mom's hair color is leaf green (because she is a tree).

also the idea of pink airi dad pleases me somehow

airi is the only forest spirit minori has ever actually seen as like human and not as a tree (like airi's mom), so she doesn't have actually anyone else to compare her to. so nothing is different from minori's pov. but i imagine the lack of green is one of airi's points of insecurity related to her appearance and how a "normal" forest spirit should look because to her it's one of the most obvious differences

when i was downloading a bunch of old files i stumbled upon some old ideas for magic au and i was reminded that i had an idea where airi originally lost her magic capabilities like. permanently after prolonged exposure to iron by shiho. so she would need to lean on minori/shizuku somewhat to communicate with plants, though she could still create the statue for haruka's reincarnation spell since her woodworking skill isn't actually tied to her forest spirit magic. maybe she had to relearn a few things because she wasn't connecting to the material but all of her practice was still there

i think that when i tried to write down that path i ended up getting stuck on how to actually write it and make the last bits of the story move forward, so she ended up getting the plantspeak back. for some reason doing that instead opened up the path to the ending for me

but i have like an old scrapped epilogue version (because magic au was written somewhat out of order) where the idea of airi losing her magic permanently still exists. this part wasn't written, but i think the idea was that after haruka came back, she poured herself into her research again this time to create some kind of magical aid that at least let airi talk to plants again, though it didn't cover the full extent of her original powers so she couldn't command them like she used to be able to

it's like interesting to think about this old version because i think it could have given more weight to what happened during the climax of the story and like. sometimes events have lasting consequences

in the final version everything just fixes itself up by the end and - well. maybe having a happy ending was important to me here

and as i think about it the idea of haruka going right back into her work after being resurrected instead of finally getting to relax like she does in the final doesn't sit quite right with me. i can't quite put it into words, but her getting to chill is what i feel fits the story best somehow

Dragon jewelry has the potential to be so cool. Sure the basics like earrings and rings and bracelets, but also huge elaborate chains that run through your horns, strands of metal and gems hung over your wings granting them beautiful designs when you take flight, chest pieces that emphasize the glow from a dragon’s heart, nose rings that change color from the heat of your flame, so many possibilities and I feel like I rarely see it played around with
