Christmas at Edward village
Christmas at Edward village is good and unique. Everything revolves around making connections, we sent Christmas gift to our clients in Montreal. One of our staff member was going to Montreal for a vacation. However, we used this medium to send this gift to them through her. She is on vacation at the same time she is working, that shows how important making connection is in this industry, no bridges should be burnt. This day happened to be my last day, David and I went Christmas shopping and he was nice enough to get me gift from the chocolate store were we bought the clients gift. I was so happy that I finally came to the end of my placement and at the same time sad that am leaving good people 😭. This actually came to the end of my placement at Edward village.

Final Presentation
My manager gave me a sales proposal to work on. Since it’s coming to the end of my placement and it’s time to present. I did my presentation on November 9th 2018. My professor, Jennifer Kirkland was there and she brought me this nice coffee that added to my energy. Overall I did well but there where constructive criticism, like I should have asked for a lot more help from everyone I could get help from. The feedback was that my presentation would have been way better than it was if I had asked people for more help. They gave me credit on my energy, and my approach towards the task.

Sale Blitz
In my previous blog, I mentioned how making connections was important in the industry. This week my boss and I walked into businesses introducing ourselves to as much people as we could reach out to. Our competitors do not really have a one on one interaction, they all communicate with their clients via email, or over the phone. There is nothing as good as introducing yourself in person and letting them know what you do and who you are. David created a map, indicating businesses around Markham, there are a lot of businesses around us. We took the buildings one by one, walked into the businesses and introduced ourselves. However, not all businesses gave us a chance to introduce ourselves, as they thought we were insurance guys, Lots of security kicked us out because they saw what we were doing as soliciting. We are just guys from the hotel trying to inform businesses around us what we have to offer for the holiday season and also letting them know that we can accommodate them if they have any company functions, like end of the year partying. I had to dress in my favourite suite, so as to make a good first impression

Refixing the system
Edward village’s previous administration was bad and corrupt, there we’re some contracts that were signed that shouldn’t have been signed, these contracts can make the hotel go bankrupt. But we have to honour this rates because they were in a contract. There was no certain standard, anybody can get any rate depending on the person they speak to. There was no fixed rates. It was all over the place and as a hotel that want to meet standards, certain standards has to be set for the new administration stystem so that they can meet up with their competitors. There are a lot of things that has to be fixed. There are certain laws that need to be Made and also there should be certain people that should enforce the law so that there will be equal punishment for any law offender. For example, guest park at the fire route, they won’t listen to the authority by just word of mouth, but when a 500 fine was issued, they all obeyed the law, they do not want to get a parking ticket.

My Job as a house person
I spoke to yunus (house keeping manager)about getting a part-time position at house keeping. He said he will see what he could figure out and luckily for me I got a position as a house person. A house person is someone that takes care of the house. I will make it simple by saying, someone that makes sure the house keepers are okay. In terms of giving them bed sheets, distributing glass cups and throwing their used bed sheets away. However, this position also requires you to make sure there is no garbage left in the hall way of each floor. I liked this position because the house keepers are friendly and helpful as well. I had the opportunity to meet one of my professors good friend on a shift. Leah Paris’s best friend was at the hotel with her husband, I saw a WestJet bag and asked if the husband was a flight attendant. He said “no but my wife is”. He wondered how I could figure that out and then I told him I am an intern at the hotel. I do flight services at Seneca college right accross the street, he asked me if I knew Leah and I said “yes she was my professor from last semester”. I was really happy to see someone that can relate to my field. Unfortunately, I couldn’t continue as a house person because it was a temporary position, they needed someone for the rush and it’s getting towards the end of the year which is a slow season for the hotel

Life at the Hotel
The life at the hotel is going so well, and its only my 3rd week. Everyone at the hotel is helpful even though they have a lot to do. My manager is the only one running the sales department. This gives me an opportunity to have a lot doing, helping him out on necessary stuff that needs to be done. I was in a meeting taking minutes, the meeting was all about setting higher goals for the new year. David is doing a very good job to make sure every month is occupied to make sure the hotel is meeting the budget. If you are wondering what taking minutes is, it simply means writing down every important details about what happened in that meeting. This summary will be presented to the whole department so that they will be aware of what happened in the meeting. Our catering manager left to go handle personal issues back home, we hired a new catering manager Irina. Irina is so nice and very helpful. She taught me how to make wifi codes, how to make labels for group that has function. She takes her time to teach me everything in details.

Making Connections
Dear Reader,
My name is Wariss Akorede, I am the Sales and Catering Intern at The Edward Village Hotel. You might be wondering why I am writing this blog in a letter form. Let me put you out out of your misery. As I work in a corporate environment, my manager has taught me to Introduce myself well and tell people what I do, also make sure I address the recipient by name their name.
It’s only my second week and I have seen how making connections can help a business grow, change your business and lastly how making connections can help you make more business deals. Making connection is simply introducing yourself politely and letting people know what you do, joke, make them happy and make them look for you again. ‘’YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU WILL NEED HELP, UNTILL YOU NEED IT”. David Sawh.
One way of making connections at Edward Village Hotel is recording past clients information, calling them back to refresh our business with them and proposing new offers to them that will make them come back to us again. While working on this documents, I saw that the hotel has kept records of client for the past 10years, at this point I realized how essential making connection is. This is for you my reader, i want you to make connection In what ever you do, and where ever you might find yourself. Stay connected.

Internship at The Edward village Hotel
Notice anything weird? Yes, I said Internship, everyone else calls it co-op. I call it Internship because my manager introduces me to everyone as the new intern, “this is wariss, he is our new intern, he is going to be in the sales department with me”. David Sawh is the sales manager at The Edward Village hotel, and I will be reporting directly to him.
Getting a placement wasn’t as difficult as I thought It would be, I walked into the hotel, Introduced myself to the receptionist and I got an interview with David the next day and I got hired on the spot. I officially start my placement tomorrow, September 27 2018. I will be reporting to my placement every Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for the next 9 weeks. Moreover, my placement is very close to Seneca college as it is a 5 minute walk to Markham campus. This is very convenient for me I can easily finish classes and walk in to my placement and I will also have easy access to the campus shuttle bus.
I think am going to love It here, In fact I think this is going to be the best 9 weeks of my life, because I find myself in the hospitality industry and The Edward Village in particular, where everyone is friendly, warm and welcoming. Everyone seem really hardworking, helpful and seem to know what they are doing. This is just a brief introduction about my placement, I will update you guys next week.
