"You know that sheet music is more my canvas. I would just ruin your canvases," Alastair paused, "Board games sounds fun though. You've got a pretty good collection."
"Maybe we can go paint some canvases at mine, or play some board games? I'm thinking something more stress relieving than going out and putting yourself out there," Asher suggested.

"I suppose I am also quite known for being corny. Does that make it okay?" Alastair asked, laughing softly, "Anyway, I better let you get back to you date. Don't let me keep you."
"New Years feels like the acceptable time for clichés," he shrugged. "They inexplicably don't feel as corny as they typically would... so I say go ham."

"I'm not sure I need a resolution for that one. I'll just... do it," Alastair said and laughed, "Seems like a healthy choice, right?" he joked.
"Sounds like you should've made one of your resolutions this year to eat more tiramisu," Charlie joked. "Because at this rate, there's no way you won't be able to check that proudly off your list."

"Listen, I'm a guy with layers but not that many layers. Typically, what you see is what you get with me," Alastair shrugged, "Yeah, I hope so. I mean, I thought I'd already find that person but people can have more than one great love in their life, right?"
"Are you now." Evelyn had to laugh at that but she could admire his honesty in that respect. "Still, getting to know people is good too. I think you deserve to find someone who makes you happy and I am sure you will eventually."

“Two more rules: You have to watch Sixteen Candles with me because it’s a classic, and… We can never tell anyone that this relationship is fake because it would be too humiliating for the both of us.”

"Yes please," Alastair said, grinning brightly, "Yes, that would be great. Thank you, Ash. What did you have in mind?"
"Are you sure?" Asher said, raising his eyebrows lightly. "Because if you're sure, we should go do something, maybe something to get your mind off the dating scene?"

"I did say I was going to quit while I was ahead but Studio Ghibli is an animation company that makes anime films. The stories are quite unique but also popular for the genre," Alastair explained.
"Yes it does." She agreed after a moment, the visualisation in her head just really not fitting for her. No doubt it would be wildly wrong but her imagination did have a way of running away with itself sometimes. "And pretty much all of that made no sense to me so I'd say that was a pretty good idea."

"Oh no, they're definitely fun," Alastair replied, "But you could say thaty about any movie. That it's not everyone's vibes."
"I suppose they're not everyone's vibe," Rosa considered when he'd mentioned that he hadn't had anyone who'd go see the movie with him. "I just think they're good fun," she then shrugged with a smile.

"That is probably the best silver lining I've heard all year," Alastair replied, grinning, "Now I think I'm going to be eating tiramisu all night," he joked.
"I suppose I could make an exception for that," Charlie joked, a smile on her lips. "At the end of the day I guess that just means more tiramisu for the both of us then, no? Silver linings."

"Me neither," Alastair replied, "Seems like it all went by in a blink. Which is the first New Year's Eve cliche I've said tonight. Probably won't be the last either," he joked.
"Happy New Year to you too, man! And that's great to hear. You seem to be doing well," he beamed back. "I'm good, I'm good. Can't believe it's a new year already."

"Nah, I'll do a glass of champagne. There's plenty of time left in the night to drink other things anyway, right?" Al replied with a chuckle.
"Yeah it's like one of those things you gotta check off," he agreed with a nod and a grin. "But if you're not feeling champagne don't feel you should force it either."

"I suppose if it's not a date setting, it could be a little invasive," Alastair admitted, "Or maybe he just doesn't like sharing," he shrugged, "I think I'm done trying for tonight, there's always the next party."
"That guy was offended because you wanted to know about his life? That's so dumb," Asher said, making a face about it. "Well I'm sure that'll work with the next one. Maybe start with something small though?" he suggested.

"Okay, now that I try and explain it to someone who doesn't understand, it sounds very strange but I feel like if I try to explain any Studio Ghibli film, I would run into the same problem so maybe I should stop while I'm ahead," Alastair paused and shook his head, "It is a muggle film so I don't expect everyone to know it."
"So... a stomach scarf?" Was the closest she could manage to get in her mind to what he'd described. Still, she supposed as long as it did the job the name was fairly irrelevant. "I'm probably a little bit behind on my pop culture."

"You give me too much credit. I'm probably almost completely like your imaginary Alastair," he admitted with a laugh, waving his hand as if to dismiss her comment, "I mean, maybe flirting is too strong a word. I'm trying to get to know people. It's been over a year since my ex up and left back to America. I figured I should put myself back out there, you know?"
Evelyn couldn't help but giggle a little at that, placing a hand over her mouth when she felt it bubbling up. "Sorry, I don't know why but given how much of a big nerd you are, I just had a vision in my head of how that would go. You're probably a lot smoother than my imaginary Alastair however..." She wasn't sure that was encouraging but she was trying. "But you're trying to flirt? That's a big step. It doesn't feel like your normal style."

Al chuckled, "Well, to be honest, I've been trying to flirt and mingle but I have been entirely unsuccessful so now I'm sitting alone. Well, not alone anymore," he smiled and raised the drink to clink it against hers, "To the unexpected."
"You're more than welcome. When I saw you over here without a drink and without company, I just couldn't have that." She tutted in gentle amusement. "Big plans? No, nothing so exciting I'm afraid, but perhaps that's a good thing. The unexpected can often be even better."
