August 2, 1993 - “I picked him because he was defenseless. I didn’t know his name.” On his way to summer camp less than one block away from his home, 4-year-old Derrick Robie is lured by 13-year-old Eric Smith to an isolated area. Smith batters Robie with large rocks, strangles him, and sodomizes him with a tree limb. Smith later explained the reason for this:

“I didn’t get any sexual gratification from it. It was pretty much a means to an end. I didn’t know whether he was dead or not, and I was terrified that if he wasn’t, he was gonna get up and tell someone. The only thing I could think of was stopping his heart. I tried to poke him in the chest, but it wouldn’t pierce the skin, and the only thing that I could think of to get to his heart was sodomizing him with a stick.”

After the murder, Smith goes through Robie’s lunch, smashing a banana, then pouring red Kool-Aid into his wounds before leaving his body. His body is found several hours later. This was the first time Derrick Robie was allowed out on his own.

September 2, 1972 - Arthur Shawcross rapes and kills 8-year-old Karen Ann Hill. Her body was found under a bridge near Black River with mud, leaves, and debris forced into her throat.
