eastoncuevas:
if someone had told easton years ago that one day he was going to be signing autographs in a hospital like some kind of celebrity, he would have laughed it off. but here he was, signing photos for the kids in the pediatric ward of sloane memorial. it was all set up by his agent, the older man insisting that this was good for his image and good publicity was always a must for pro athletes. he had just nodded along, because he knew the man was stubborn and no matter what easton said, he was going to be doing this charity event. not that he minded, not at all. he loved kids, and he loved making them happy just by them meeting him. it was especially important because some of these kids had been stuck in the walls of this hospital for months upon months, and this event was probably the highlight of their entire stay. it was what made him eager to be there for hours, no matter how exhausted he might have been from practicing the day before or how hungry he was from forgetting to eat breakfast, once again. if he had to sacrifice a few things to make their day, then it was worth it. every kid that came by made him happier and happier to be there, some of them so excited to meet him because he was one of their favorite college athletes, and some just excited to have someone to talk to, even if they didn’t know anything about his athletic career. he couldn’t help but think about his ex, though, and about their kid. if she had even ended up having it, that was. he was so uninformed on how she was doing and her life that he didn’t even know if he had a kid to be thinking about, much less whether or not it was a boy or girl. there was nothing he could do about it though, so instead, he had focused all of his time on his football career and on his studies at the university of washington. now it had gotten him a professional career in the nfl, which not many people who played college sports could say. so he was grateful, despite what had led him there. it reminded him of how he had almost given it all up for her. he didn’t want to focus on his past, trying to push the thoughts away as he continued to talk to patient after patient. out of the corner of his eye, he caught a woman trying to cut in lie, almost asking his guard to politely tell her that there was no cutting, when she spoke up herself. the tone in her voice surprised him, considering he didn’t know her at all and she had the audacity to say something like that. “you know, using those words isn’t really a good example to set for the kids.” he raised his head, about to ask her what her problem was, when he lost his ability to speak. it was her. here, in this hospital at the same time as him. “aleah? what the hell are you doing here? did you know i was coming here today?” his eyes trailed to the child in her arms, and he could have sworn his heart stopped. “what?” it was all he could manage to say, eyes wide as he tried to tell himself that this was a dream. a messed up dream, but dream nonetheless.

the brunette was stunned. she didn’t know what to say, or why she had said anything in the first place. it seemed as if some unnatural force took over her mouth and she just had to say something. rationally, she knew she had no reason to be so aggressive towards easton. after all, she had made the choice to have the baby, keeping luca a secret so that only one of them would have to compromise their dreams. even at seventeen, aleah knew that easton was going to do great things and she didn’t want to be the reason he didn’t fulfill his potential. aleah, on the other hand, didn’t expect herself to become much. she was always the creative one who spent her afternoons painting or collaging, perpetually disappointing her lawyer father with her lack of employable skills. despite this, aleah was ruled by logic. although it killed her to distance herself, moving away to her grandmother’s house after admitting to easton that she was pregnant, hoping that she would be giving him the chance to become something. but now, seeing him again, as handsome as ever, as successful as she hoped, made her angrier than she could fathom. holding luca’s head, she glared at easton, brows furrowed, lips pursed, “you know what? forget it. forget you saw me.” she quickly turned around and walked out the room, tears falling from her eyes from what she wasn’t sure was rage or confusion or nostalgia. whatever the feeling was though, it was strong. feeling far enough away from him, she slid down the wall, breathing heavy, rubbing luca’s back, feeling pattern of his breath on her chest. this wasn’t how she meant for their meeting to go down. in fact, she wasn’t even sure if she wanted them to meet at all. looking up at her with his father’s eyes, luca pouted, touching a hand to her face asking if she was okay. she nodded, placing him to sit on the floor beside her. “i’m alright, bud,” she assured him, ruffling his hair. “i just saw someone i hadn’t seen in a long time but you, my love, do not have to worry about it.” seemingly satisfied with her response, she reached into her purse to pull out his toy car, handing the orange object to the dejected preschooler while she tried to regulate her breath. she hadn’t realized how anxious she was about seeing him again until she tried to breath, and her lungs wouldn’t let her.

aleah had been up since 6 am studying for a biology exam that had snuck up on her. luckily, her manager at the restaurant had graciously given her the week off, and her parents had offered to watch her son, luca, while she was in class. although the brunette had been holed up in her university’s library for the past few days, she now found herself drinking lukewarm cafeteria coffee in the lobby of sloane memorial hospital. luca, her effervescent three-year-old had flung himself off the monkey bars and broken his arm while grandma was watching. aleah was relieved because she had at least had the chance to finish writing her exam before her mother called her crying, seemingly unsure how to deal with the situation. aleah, though, was completely calm. she figured that he’d have to break a bone someday, with the way he climbed on any structures and hung from any high places he could read. although he was the light of her life, the child with his messy brown hair and puppy dog eyes was anything but easy. at only twenty-one, she often felt like she was too old to keep up with his antics. the waiting room of the hospital was unusually busy, the pediatric ward packed to the brim with children in sports jerseys. it struck the girl as odd, but she was too busy clutching luca’s wailing body, trying to assure him that the doctor had only tried to make his arm better, not worse. he never seemed to believe her, always the worrier. she saw herself in him most days, but at times she’d catch glimpses of luca’s father in his mannerisms or facial expressions and be reminded of the way she let her own worries get in the way of her life. the little boy rested his face in her neck, heaving, but quiet now. the emergency room doctor had wrapped his arm, but because of his age and size they wanted to have a pediatrician double check it which is how the pair found themselves in the waiting room, biding their time to sign the insurance papers and stop for ice cream on the way home. pulling her hair into a messy bun, she stood up, three-year-old taking up most of her torso real estate, and walked around the crowded room until he had calmed down enough. spotting a table and what seemed to be a photo backdrop in the corner, she walked around the queue of children and their parents, leaning over to take a glance at who was signing autographs. it was odd to find a meet and greet happening at a hospital, and aleah was practically fuming that the debacle was taking her own time away. however, when she began to open her mouth to ask what the spectacle was about she found herself looking into eyes she hadn’t seen in four years. “what the hell are you doing here?” she stammered, whispering the curse while turning luca’s face away from the other person.
