Thinks about how growing up Hugo spoke Russian and had a Russian accent when he spoke English but that made him stand out as a thief, so he worked hard to stamp out his accent completely and somewhat learn other accents as he learned other languages. You can kind of tell when he’s speaking other languages that he’s not a native speaker, but he’s fluent enough that it might fool someone who isn’t paying attention and wouldn’t expect this random kid to be faking a semi-authentic sounding accent.

His default accent now is a non-descript American accent.

I have one last essay kicking my ass but maybe I’ll manage to be here over spring break this week. I should at least work more on Hugo’s info doc.

Dear Past Me,

You are so screwed it’s not even funny. This job is probably the best and worst one you’ll ever take. You’re whole life is going to go completely batshit, and it’s going to be beautiful.

It’s going to be great. Trust me, and yeah I know how that sounds coming from us. Every step along the road is going to be a goddamn nightmare, but once you get to the end you’ll never regret a single moment of the fucked up journey it took you to get here. You’re never gonna see this cause despite everything I still don’t believe that time travel is a thing yet.

Probably gonna be proven wrong on that someday. But for now, nah.

Lowkey obsessed with Hugo’s relationship with Donella just because like. This woman raised him but he’d never put the word ‘mother’ to it, because he always saw it more as a mentorship, but she’s still the only parental figure he’s ever had. He was so secure in his relationship with her before being sent to infiltrate the Alchemy Gang, and then his loyalty starts wavering because Friendship or whatever and his feelings get only more complicated as the adventure goes on and the stakes ramp up.

Especially if Donella’s motivations end up being more complicated then we think because of her relationship to Varian’s mother. It still won’t really justify her actions, and Hugo’s gonna be conflicted about it either way.

But man, the complexity there could be. . . so good. . .

Me: puts a lot of time and effort into V//rigo and how Varian specifically changes Hugo as a character and how important Varian will be to him despite every effort to Not Let That Happen.

Also Me: okay but Hugo and Nuru could have the most insane varition of that exact same dynamic and it’d be hilarious. The emotional stakes would be through the roof vs the actual stakes + I’m always a hoe for the royal / thief ships.

I’ve officially decided my favorite relationship trope is “at first I was perpetually bothered by your mere existence but somewhere along the way you became my best friend and oh yeah I’m also in love with you.” Nothing else matters.

Mmm Hugo having serious discussions with people and being vulnerable with his emotions and the inner turmoil he feels about being torn between Donella and the Gang(tm). Hugo letting down his walls for the first time in his life. Hugo feeling comfortable enough around someone else who understands him to actually be that open and letting someone else peer through his mask of confidence.
