As a wheelchair user I'm trying to reframe my language for "being in the way."

"I'm in the way," "I can't fit," and "I can't go there," is becoming "there's not enough space," "the walkway is too narrow," and "that place isn't accessible."

It's a small change, but to me it feels as if I'm redirecting blame from myself to the people that made these places inaccessible in the first place. I don't want people to just think that they're helping me, I want them to think that they're making up for someone else's wrongdoing. I want them to remember every time I've needed help as something someone else caused.

So You Want to be Solarpunk?

If your neighborhood has a vacant lot, get some neighbors together and turn it into a community garden.

Organize a block party.

Create a maker space enabling folks to repair, repurpose, and swap their old stuff.

Organize a bunch of plant-savvy neighbors to help folks convert their yards from resource hungry yuppie lawns into something sustainable that fits the local biome.

Get a few friends together and clean up the trash on the streets. Make sure to recycle.

Set up Little Free Libraries and Little Free Pantries.

Get tool-savvy neighbors together to help folks with needed household repairs and upgrades.

The punk in solarpunk is about resistance to the alienation and consumer culture that makes our communities unsustainable and our environments toxic.

“From the Art of Mirrors” is a 50 minute music piece by German composer Max Richter, created as a soundtrack for the 1973 Super 8 film (The Art Of Mirrors) by the late artist Derek Jarman .

In 2010, Romain Olivieri (composer and Richter’s enthusiast) realised how my 7 minute film Mnemographies flows seamlessly with the second movement from Richter’s piece, so he proposed to work together by re-visiting Mnemographies, this time with Ritcher’s soundtrack and adding some subtle sound effects .

I found Olivieri’s idea even more poignant because of my appreciation of Jarman’s ground breaking cinema. As my first attempt with Super 8, Mnemographies is a collection of short sequences that I started in the late 90’s, exploring the concept of emotional memory. The result is a personal reflection on time and melancholy.

*I do not own the rights for Max Richter music. This film was re-edited in 2010 from my 2005 original film, as a tribute to his music and the cinema of Derek Jarman.
